UK Visa Document Translation Checklist 2026
The complete checklist for every UK visa type. Bookmark this page — it shows which documents need certified translation and which don't.
One of the most stressful parts of a UK visa application is working out which documents need certified translation. Miss one, and your application could be delayed or refused. Translate one you didn't need, and you've wasted money.

This master checklist covers the six most common UK visa categories. For each one, we list every document type. We also show whether translation is required, sometimes needed, or not needed.
The Golden Rule
Any document not in English that you submit as evidence must have a certified translation. If a document is already in English, you do not need a translation — even if it was issued in a non-English-speaking country. UKVI cares about the language of the document, not where it was issued.

Money-Saving Tips
How to Save on Translation Costs
- Reuse translations of permanent documents — Translations of birth and marriage certificates from past applications are still valid. See our guide on translation validity
- Don't translate English documents — Documents already in English do not need translation, even if they were issued abroad
- Skip notarisation — UKVI does not require it. See our notarisation guide
- Only translate what's required — Do not translate every page of a passport. Only translate the pages UKVI needs
- Bundle documents — Translating several documents together often costs less per page than translating them one by one
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I'm not sure whether a document needs translation?
When in doubt, translate it. An extra document costs little to translate (£15-25). A visa refusal or delay costs far more. If a document is partly in English and partly in another language, translate the non-English parts.
Can I translate my own documents to save money?
No. UKVI requires translations to be done by an independent third party. Self-translations and family translations will be rejected.
How quickly can I get all my documents translated?
Standard turnaround for most documents is 24-48 hours. A full set of documents for a spouse visa (5-8 documents) usually takes 2-3 business days. For urgent applications, rush services are available.
