How Long Is a Certified Translation Valid for UK Visa?
The translation itself doesn't expire — but the document behind it might. Knowing the difference can save you time and money.
This is one of the most common questions about visa translations. The answer has two parts. A certified translation has no expiry date of its own. UKVI does not stamp translations with a "use by" date. What matters is whether the source document behind the translation is still valid.
The Key Principle
Translation Validity Rule
A certified translation stays valid for as long as the source document it came from stays valid. If that document expires or is replaced, the translation is no longer useful. Not because the translation ran out — because the document did.
Documents Without an Expiry Date
These documents are issued once and stay valid forever. You can reuse a certified translation of any of them for many visa applications over many years:
Translate Once, Use Repeatedly
- Birth certificates — Your birth certificate never expires. A translation done in 2020 still works in 2026
- Marriage certificates — Your marriage certificate is a permanent record
- Divorce decrees — Final divorce orders are permanent too
- Death certificates — Permanent records
- Degree certificates and diplomas — Academic awards are permanent
- Name change documents — Deed polls and court orders are permanent
Documents With a Shelf Life
These documents are only valid for a set time. UKVI needs them to be current on the day you apply. So you may need a new translation each time you apply:
| Document | Typical Validity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bank statements | 28 days from date of statement | Must show your funds for the required period |
| Police clearance certificates | 6-12 months from issue | Varies by issuing country |
| TB test results | 6 months from test date | Required for specific nationalities |
| Employment references | Varies — should be recent | UKVI prefers references from the last 3-6 months |
| Medical records | 6-12 months typically | Depends on the type of medical check |
| Passport | Until expiry date | If you renew your passport, the old translation is out of date |
Important Note
Even if a document has not expired, UKVI caseworkers may still question a very old translation. If your translation is more than 2-3 years old, think about getting a new one. This matters most if the document format or the issuing authority has changed since then. A new translation also shows the caseworker that you have prepared your application with care.
Can I Reuse Translations from a Previous Application?
Yes, in many cases. Say you had documents translated for a visa application that was refused, or for a different visa type. You can reuse those translations as long as:
The source document has not expired or been replaced
The translation still matches the current document exactly
The certification statement is complete and easy to read
Nothing on the source document has changed (for example, amendments or endorsements)
This helps most with permanent documents like birth and marriage certificates. If your spouse visa was refused and you are applying again, you do not need to pay for a new translation of your birth certificate. The old one is still fine.
When You Should Get a Fresh Translation
The Source Document Has Been Reissued
Say you got a new version of the document, such as a replacement birth certificate with updated details. The old translation no longer matches, so you need a new one.
The Document Format Has Changed
Some countries update their official document formats from time to time. If your country now issues a new-format birth certificate, UKVI may expect that newer version.
Previous Application Had Quality Issues
Was your last visa application refused partly because of poor or incomplete translation? Do not reuse the same translation. Get a new, better one that answers the caseworker's concerns.
Frequently Asked Questions
My birth certificate translation is 5 years old — can I still use it?
Yes, as long as the birth certificate has not been reissued and the translation is still accurate. Birth certificates never expire, so neither does the translation. Just check that the certification statement is clear and the translator's details are still easy to read.
I got bank statements translated last month — are they still valid?
The translation itself is fine. The problem is the bank statement may now be too old for UKVI. UKVI usually asks for bank statements dated within 28 days of the application. If yours are older than that, you need new statements — and new translations.
Can I use the same translation for UK and Canada applications?
For permanent documents like birth and marriage certificates, yes. The translated text is the same. But IRCC may ask for extra certification, such as a sworn affidavit that UKVI-certified translations do not include. Check what each country asks for.
Does UKVI have a maximum age limit for translations?
UKVI does not set a maximum age for translations. What matters is that the translation matches your current source document. Even so, caseworkers tend to prefer recent translations, because they show you have prepared your application with care.
