Documents to Translate for a UK Spouse Visa

Everything you need to know about certified translation requirements for UK spouse, partner, and fiancé visa applications in 2026.

Who Needs Document Translation for a UK Spouse Visa?

If you are applying for a UK spouse visa (also known as the family visa under Appendix FM), you must give certified English translations of any document that is not in English or Welsh. The same rule covers fiancé visas and unmarried partner visas. If you are the non-EEA spouse or partner of a British citizen or settled person, the Home Office needs clear certified translations before it can process your application.

Frequently Asked Questions - Spouse Visa Translation

Do I need to translate my marriage certificate if it's already in English?

If your marriage certificate is entirely in English, you need no translation. But some certificates from other countries mix English with another language. Any part that is not in English still needs a certified translation.

What is the minimum income requirement and how does translation help?

Sponsors must earn at least £29,000 a year to bring a spouse to the UK. A planned rise to £38,700 was paused, and in June 2025 the Migration Advisory Committee advised against it. If the sponsor's bank statements, payslips or employment letters are in another language, certified translations let the Home Office check that the income meets the threshold.

Can I translate documents myself for a spouse visa?

No. UKVI wants a qualified independent translator, not the applicant or a family member. The translator must give a signed certification statement confirming the translation is accurate.

How long does spouse visa document translation take?

Standard turnaround is within 24 hours for most documents. We recommend getting translations done at least 2 weeks before your visa application date to allow time for any additional documents.

Do I need to translate WhatsApp messages or relationship evidence?

Usually not. UKVI mainly wants official documents translated. Informal proof, such as messages in another language, may not need a formal translation. Check with your immigration adviser.

What if my divorce decree is from another country?

Every foreign divorce decree needs a certified translation, whatever country issued it. Talaq, get, or civil decree — UKVI needs to read the details in English.

Financial Requirements for Spouse Visa 2026

The financial requirement gets the closest look of any part of a UK spouse visa application. In 2026, the sponsor (the partner based in the UK) must earn at least £29,000 gross per year to bring a spouse or partner to the UK. This threshold came in with the government's family visa reforms and replaced the old £18,600 figure. The Home Office has confirmed £29,000 for 2026, but it could rise again in later years.

2026 Minimum Income Threshold

The sponsor must earn at least £29,000 gross per year. This can come from a salaried job, from self-employment, or from a mix of income sources that qualify. If the sponsor cannot reach the threshold on income alone, savings can cover the gap under set rules.

Note: if the sponsor already has a child in the UK from an earlier relationship, the income threshold may be higher. Always check the latest Appendix FM guidance on GOV.UK.

Your sponsor's financial papers may be in a language other than English: payslips, bank statements, a P60, an employment contract, or tax returns. Every one of them must be professionally translated before you apply. Caseworkers cannot check the income against the £29,000 threshold if they cannot read the evidence. Untranslated financial documents count as if you never sent them.

Employed Sponsors

Payslips for the 6 months before you apply, a letter from the employer confirming salary and job status, and 6 months of bank statements showing the salary going in. Anything not in English must be translated.

Self-Employed Sponsors

An HMRC self-assessment tax return (SA302) for the latest tax year, proof of self-employment registration, and business accounts. Foreign equivalents must be translated in full.

Using Savings to Top Up

If the sponsor earns below £29,000, savings can bridge the gap. You need £16,000 in savings plus 2.5 times the shortfall in annual income. Foreign bank statements showing savings must be translated.

Additional Income Sources

Rent, dividends and other non-employment income can count towards the threshold in some cases. Financial papers from abroad, such as rental agreements or dividend statements, must be translated.

Common Spouse Visa Refusal Reasons Related to Documents

Knowing why spouse visas get refused helps you build a stronger application. Many refusals are avoidable and come down to document problems, including missing translations.

Untranslated Financial Documents

If you send payslips, bank statements or employment letters in another language, UKVI cannot check the sponsor's income against the £29,000 threshold. This is one of the most common causes of refusal on financial grounds.

Marriage Certificate Not Translated or Not Certified

A marriage certificate in another language, sent without a certified English translation, may be ignored completely. UKVI needs to confirm the names, the dates and that the marriage is legal. Only a certified translation does that.

Previous Divorce Not Evidenced or Translated

If either of you was married before, UKVI needs proof that the earlier marriage ended legally. An untranslated foreign divorce decree does not prove this. The visa can then be refused because the earlier marriage looks like it is still in place.

Income Below the Minimum Threshold

Translations do not help if the money is not there. If the sponsor's gross income is below £29,000 and there are no qualifying savings, the application will be refused. Being close to the threshold is not enough. You must meet it in full and prove it with documents.

Genuine Relationship Not Established

UKVI must be satisfied the relationship is genuine and subsisting. Some applications rest on thin evidence, or on letters in another language that were never translated. If the caseworker cannot judge the relationship, the visa can be refused.

Translation Not Certified or From an Unqualified Translator

A translation is only accepted with a signed certification statement from a qualified translator who is not part of the application. Translations you do yourself, Google Translate output, or work by family members are rejected outright. Every translation must be certified by an independent translator.
