In detail
About Diploma translation
Diploma translations bridge the gap between foreign education systems and UK academic standards, making them indispensable for skilled worker and student visa applications. A diploma is more than a certificate of completion — it often contains grading scales, institutional seals, and honorific language that require nuanced translation to convey the qualification's true standing.
Key translation challenges
- Grading systems and degree classifications
- A "cum laude" distinction, a German "Sehr gut," or a French "mention très bien" each signal different levels of achievement that UK institutions and UKVI caseworkers may not inherently understand. Translators must render these accurately and, where helpful, provide contextual notes.
- Institutional titles and seals
- Many diplomas include the full legal name of the awarding institution in formal or archaic language, along with institutional mottos in Latin or other languages. These must be translated or transliterated faithfully to ensure the document is traceable to its source.
UKVI visa requirements
Diploma translations are critical for Skilled Worker Visa applications where UKVI or the employer must verify that the applicant holds qualifications equivalent to UK standards. For Student Visa (formerly Tier 4) applications, translated diplomas demonstrate prior academic achievement. NARIC (now ENIC-NARIC) equivalency assessments are often based on the translated diploma, making accuracy essential.
Apostilles, legalisation & handwritten entries
Diplomas and degree certificates for UK use may be apostilled (for countries party to the Hague Apostille Convention) or legalised, sometimes after authentication by the education ministry or awarding institution; where such certification is attached, we translate it too. Handwritten registration numbers, embossed institutional seals, and rector signatures are described and translated, with any unclear element noted.
How to get your Diploma translated
- 1Upload your diploma — we handle both single-page certificates and multi-page diploma supplements
- 2Our system identifies the source language and educational document format
- 3An academic translation specialist renders all text including degree title, institution name, grading distinctions, and date of award
- 4Grading scales and honours classifications are translated faithfully without conversion, preserving the original system for ENIC-NARIC assessment
- 5Institutional seals, rector signatures, and registration numbers are described and translated in full
- 6The certified translation is delivered ready for UKVI submission or ENIC-NARIC equivalency application
Country-specific Diploma formats
- Germany
- German diplomas use the terms "Diplom," "Bachelor," or "Master" with specific grading (Sehr gut, Gut, Befriedigend). The Diploma Supplement (Diplomzusatz) is often required alongside the main certificate for ENIC-NARIC assessment.
- France
- French diplomas use the "mention" system (très bien, bien, assez bien, passable). The diploma itself is often brief, with detailed academic records on a separate "relevé de notes" that should also be translated.
- Mexico
- Mexican professional diplomas (cédula profesional and título profesional) are two separate documents — the degree certificate and the professional licence. UKVI may require both to be translated.
- Egypt
- Egyptian diplomas are issued in Arabic, often with elaborate calligraphic formatting. University names and degree titles must be transliterated carefully as they may differ from the English versions used on university websites.
Common Diploma translation rejection reasons
- Diploma translation implies a UK-equivalent degree title that does not match the ENIC-NARIC assessment
- Translators should render the original degree title accurately (e.g., "Licenciado" not "Bachelor's degree") and leave equivalency determination to ENIC-NARIC.
- Institutional name translated rather than transliterated, making it untraceable
- The institution's name should be transliterated with the translation in parentheses, so UKVI can verify the institution against official registers.
- Grading scale or honours classification omitted or inaccurately converted
- Include the original grading notation alongside the translation and avoid converting to UK degree classifications — caseworkers expect the original system.
