Documents to Translate for UK Citizenship (Naturalisation)
What you need to know about certified translation for UK naturalisation applications on Form AN in 2026.
Who Needs Document Translation for UK Citizenship?
Are you applying for British citizenship by naturalisation (Form AN)? Then you need a certified English translation of every supporting document that is not in English or Welsh. This is the last step in your immigration journey. You spend years in the UK on a visa, then get Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Naturalisation then gives you full British citizenship.
Citizenship applications are hard for one reason: they often call for old documents. Birth certificates, marriage records and civil status papers can be decades old. Some come from countries that no longer exist in their old form. These papers are often faded, handwritten, or laid out in a way you rarely see today.
UKVI Translation Requirement
The Home Office says every document not in English or Welsh must come with a certified translation. Each translation needs a signed statement from the translator. That statement confirms the work is accurate and complete. Machine translations and uncertified translations are NOT accepted.
Citizenship Application Translation Pricing
All languages from £17.99 per page. Most citizenship applications need 4-8 documents translated.
Documents You Must Translate for Naturalisation
These are the documents that most often need a certified translation for a UK citizenship application:
Birth Certificate
Your original birth certificate from your home country. Older ones may be handwritten, or on an unusual form.
Marriage or Civil Partnership Certificate
Your current marriage certificate. If you married abroad, send the foreign certificate with a certified translation.
Divorce Decree or Death Certificate
If you were married before, you must show how that marriage ended. Send the divorce decree, or your spouse's death certificate.
National Identity Card
If your national ID card has text that is not in English, those parts need a certified translation.
Police Clearance Certificates
Needed for any country where you have lived 12 months or more in the last 10 years. Each certificate in another language needs translating.
Name Change Documents
Deed polls, court orders or official name change papers from your home country. They explain why your name differs across documents.
Adoption Certificate
If you were adopted, the official adoption decree or certificate from your home country needs a certified translation.
Referees' Documents (If Applicable)
If your character referees send in papers written in another language, those need a certified translation too.
Documents You Do NOT Need to Translate
Not everything in your citizenship application needs translating. These documents do not need a certified translation:
Life in the UK Test Certificate
The test provider issues this in English, so you need no translation.
Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
The UK Home Office issues it, so it is already in English.
English Language Test Certificate
IELTS, Trinity and other SELT certificates are already in English.
UK Utility Bills and Council Tax
UK documents you use to prove where you live are already in English.
The Historical Document Challenge
Citizenship applications stand out because they often need papers from decades ago. Your birth certificate might be 30, 40 or even 50 years old. That brings a few common problems:
Handwritten Documents
Civil servants wrote many older birth and marriage certificates by hand. They can be hard to read even in the original language. A professional translator who knows your language and region will recognise the handwriting of that era.
Faded or Damaged Documents
Papers kept for decades often have faded ink, water damage or torn edges. Upload the clearest scan you can. Our translators can usually work with a document you can only partly read. They will mark any part they cannot make out.
Documents from Former Countries
Some countries have changed their name or their borders, such as Yugoslavia, the USSR and Czechoslovakia. If you were born in one, your documents may use a language or a layout no longer in official use. Professional translators who know these regions handle them accurately.
Archaic Language or Formats
Older documents often use dated words, old legal terms or pre-reform spelling. Older Arabic papers may use Ottoman-era terms. Older Chinese papers may use Traditional characters, even ones from mainland China.

Frequently Asked Questions - Citizenship Translation
Do I need to translate my passport for citizenship?
Usually not. Passports follow an international standard (ICAO), so they show English next to the national language. There is one exception. If a stamp, endorsement or note in your passport is only in a foreign language, and it matters to your case, that part may need translating.
My birth certificate is very old and hard to read. Can it still be translated?
Yes. Professional translators who work with old records can handle aged, handwritten and faded documents. Upload the best scan you have. Our translators will mark any part they cannot read. If you need to, you can ask your home country for a replacement certificate.
I already had documents translated for my ILR application. Do I need new translations?
You can reuse the certified translations from your ILR application. They must still be accurate and still meet UKVI standards. Certified translations do not expire. But if a document itself has changed, such as a new marriage certificate, you need a new translation of it.
What if my document is from a country that no longer exists?
Documents from countries that no longer exist, such as the USSR, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, are still valid for a citizenship application. The translator should record the original issuing office and country in the translation. Ours have handled papers from former Soviet and Yugoslav states, and from other historical states.
Do I need to translate the Life in the UK test certificate?
No. The Life in the UK test certificate comes in English, so it needs no translation. The same goes for your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) and your English language test certificate.
How does citizenship translation differ from visa translation?
The rules are the same: certified, accurate and complete. Citizenship applications just tend to involve more old documents, and to cover a longer stretch of your life. The good news is that you have probably translated many of them already, for earlier visa and ILR applications.
