Employment Reference & Contract Translation for UK Skilled Worker Visa
Your work history is a core part of the Skilled Worker visa application. If your references, contracts, or payslips are not in English, they need certified translation.
The UK Skilled Worker visa route asks you to show your professional qualifications and your work history. If you come from a country where English is not the main language, you will need several work documents translated. That means more than the reference letter. It can also include contracts, payslips, tax returns, and professional certificates.
What Employment Documents Need Translation?
| Document | When Required | Key Details to Translate |
|---|---|---|
| Employment reference letter | Almost always | Job title, dates, responsibilities, salary |
| Employment contract | If supporting evidence needed | Terms, salary, job description, duration |
| Payslips | For salary evidence | Gross/net pay, deductions, employer name |
| Tax returns / P60 equivalent | Additional salary evidence | Annual income, tax paid, employer details |
| Professional certificates | If role requires specific credentials | Qualification name, issuing body, dates |
| Social insurance records | If no other employment proof available | Contribution history, employment periods |
What UKVI Looks for in Employment References
Key Elements UKVI Checks
- Job title — Must match the SOC code on your Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
- Employment dates — Start and end dates (or "to present")
- Job duties — Detailed enough to confirm the SOC code match
- Salary information — To confirm you meet the minimum salary threshold
- Company details — Name, address, and contact for verification
- Signatory details — Name, position, and signature of the person writing the reference
Country-Specific Employment Document Formats
India
Indian work references usually come on company letterhead in a formal layout. If the letter is in Hindi, Gujarati, or another regional language, you need a full translation. Some IT companies write references in English already. Those do not need translating.
China
Chinese work references (工作证明) are usually short. They often lack the detail UKVI expects. So you may need both the reference and the employment contract translated. Social insurance (社保) records can add extra proof of your work history.
Middle East
Gulf state work documents are often in two languages (Arabic and English). If you have the English version, you may not need a translation. But if you only have the Arabic version, or if the two versions do not match, get the Arabic document translated.
European Countries
EU work documents differ a lot from country to country. The German Arbeitszeugnis (work certificate) has a set structure and uses coded wording. The French attestation de travail follows a different format. Each one needs a translation that keeps the exact meaning.
Tips for Getting References Translated Smoothly
Request the Reference in the Most Detailed Format Possible
Ask your employer to include your full job title, duties, and salary. The more detail in the original, the stronger the translated version will be.
Get Both Local Language and English Versions
If your employer can issue the reference in both languages, UKVI can check one against the other. This makes your evidence stronger.
Include Contact Details for Verification
UKVI may contact your employer to check the reference. Make sure it includes a phone number and email that someone will answer in English.
Translate Supporting Documents Too
If your reference does not show salary details, translate payslips or your employment contract as well.
Not Just Skilled Worker Visa
You may also need work references for a Global Talent visa (to prove your professional achievements), for ILR applications (to show unbroken employment), and for naturalisation (as part of good character evidence).
Frequently Asked Questions
My employer issued the reference in English — do I still need translation?
No. If the reference is already in English, you do not need a translation. This is true whatever country issued it. But if other documents come with it (contract, payslips) in another language, those still need translation.
My former employer won't provide a reference — what can I do?
If you cannot get a reference letter, you can send other proof instead: translated employment contracts, payslips, social insurance records, or tax documents. Together, these can take the place of a reference letter. Also explain in writing why the reference is not available.
How many payslips should I translate?
Usually 3-6 months of payslips is enough to show a clear salary pattern. If payslips are your main proof of salary (because the reference letter does not state it), translate enough to cover the full evidence period your visa type asks for.
Does the German Arbeitszeugnis need special handling?
Yes. German work certificates use coded wording. A phrase that sounds positive can in fact mean weak performance (for example, "stets zu unserer Zufriedenheit" is only middling praise). A translator who knows German employment documents will keep these shades of meaning. For UKVI, the facts matter most: dates, role, and duties.
