Documents to Translate for a UK Student Visa
Your guide to certified translation rules for UK Student Route visa applications. We explain the academic, financial, and personal documents you need.
Do Student Visa Applicants Need Certified Translations?
To apply for a UK Student visa (once called Tier 4), you need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed sponsor. Every supporting document you send that is not in English or Welsh needs a certified translation. That covers your qualifications, your money evidence, and your personal documents.
UKVI Translation Requirement
Every document you send with a Student Route application that is not in English or Welsh needs a certified translation. That includes your qualifications, your money evidence, and your personal documents. Each translation must carry a signed statement from the translator confirming it is accurate.
Student Visa Translation Pricing
All languages cost from £17.99 per page. Transcripts and financial documents are usually 2-6 pages each.
Documents You Must Translate for a Student Visa
These documents usually need a certified translation for a UK Student Route application:
Academic Transcripts
Your university grade records, course completion papers, and study history.
Degree Certificates
Bachelor's and master's certificates that prove your study level.
Bank Statements
Proof of money for your tuition fees plus £1,136 a month outside London (£1,483 in London), for up to 9 months.
Parental Financial Support
If a parent is paying for your studies, translate their bank documents and their consent letter.
Birth Certificate
This proves who you are. It matters most when a parent pays, because it shows the family link.
Tuberculosis Test Results
People from some countries must take a TB test. Translate the certificate if it is not in English.
Academic Document Translation: Special Considerations
Academic documents need extra care. Grading systems differ from country to country. Your school may use a GPA, percentages, letter grades, or words like "distinction" and "merit". The translator must carry all of these across correctly. Transcripts from China, India, and Pakistan also use special university terms and course codes. That work needs a translator with academic experience.

Frequently Asked Questions - Student Visa Translation
Do I need to translate my transcript if my university teaches in English?
Yes, if the transcript itself is printed in another language. The language you were taught in does not matter. If the transcript is all in English, you need no translation. Just check that it matches your CAS details.
How much money do I need to show for a Student Visa?
You must show money for your tuition fees plus £1,136 a month outside London, or £1,483 a month in London, for up to 9 months. The money must sit in the account for at least 28 days in a row. Translate any financial evidence that is not in English.
Can my university translate my documents?
Only if the university runs an official certified translation service with a qualified translator. UKVI does not accept informal translations by lecturers or other staff.
What financial documents are accepted for a Student Visa?
UKVI accepts bank statements, fixed deposit certificates, loan approval letters, and scholarship letters. Translate any of them that are not in English. They must show the money held for at least 28 days in a row.
Do I need to translate my English language test results?
No. Secure English Language Test (SELT) results, such as IELTS and PTE Academic, come in English. UKVI takes them as they are.
How far in advance should I get translations done?
Try to translate your documents 2-4 weeks before you apply. We normally deliver within 24 hours. But extra time gives you room if you find more documents to translate.
Student Visa Financial Requirements 2026
Before UKVI grants your Student Visa, you must show enough money for your tuition fees and your living costs in the UK. The 2026 maintenance rates are £1,483 per month if you study in London and £1,136 per month if you study outside London, for up to 9 months. You need this money on top of any tuition fees still owed on your CAS.
2026 Maintenance Requirements at a Glance
The money must sit in your bank account for at least 28 days in a row. It can sit in a parent's or legal guardian's account instead if they are paying. That 28-day period must end no more than 31 days before you apply. If the statements are not in English, you need a certified translation of every page. UKVI cannot check your balance on a document it cannot read.
Personal Bank Statements
These must show the required money held for 28 days in a row. Statements from banks in China, India, Pakistan, Nigeria, and other countries are the financial documents we translate most often for students.
Parental Bank Statements
If a parent is paying, their statements must show the required amount. They must also write a consent letter saying they will support you. Translate both the statements and the letter if they are not in English.
Official Financial Sponsorship
This covers government scholarships, university awards, and study paid for by an employer. The sponsorship letter must be in English or have a certified translation. Letters from overseas government ministries often come in Arabic or Chinese.
Loan Approval Letters
UKVI accepts student loans approved by a government body in your home country. Translate the approval letter if it is not in English. It must clearly state the amount approved.
Timeline: When to Start Document Translation
Timing matters a lot for Student Visa applications. You cannot apply more than 6 months before your course starts. But leaving the translation too late puts you under pressure. Here is a plan, counting back from the day you apply:
Date
Receive Your CAS from the University
Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is the starting point. It holds your CAS reference number, your course details, your tuition fees, and your course dates. Check it closely. Your translated documents must match the CAS exactly.
+1wk
Begin Gathering Financial Documents
Start collecting bank statements as soon as your CAS arrives. The 28-day rule means the clock is already running. Put the money in the account and leave it there for the full 28 days.
+3wks
Order Certified Translations
When the 28 days are over and you have your statements, order your certified translations at once. You can translate your transcripts and degree certificates now too. We normally deliver in 24 hours, but allow 3–5 days in case anything needs changing.
-2wks
Review All Translations Against Your CAS
Check every translated document against your CAS. Names, dates, and amounts must match. If something is wrong, contact us and your university before you apply. Leave 2 weeks before your application date to sort out any problems.
-3days
Final Document Check
Check that your bank statements still show the required balance and are dated within 31 days of your application. Check that every certified translation includes the translator's statement. Check that your passport details match on all documents.
Submit Your Student Visa Application
Apply online and upload every translated document as a PDF. UKVI usually decides Student Visa applications within 3 weeks. You can pay extra for priority processing in 5 working days.
Important: Document Expiry After Application
Your bank statements must be dated within 31 days of the day you apply. If your translated statements are older than that, you need new statements. You will also need new translations if they are not in English. Plan your timing so this does not happen.
