Translating WhatsApp Chats & Relationship Evidence for a UK Partner Visa

Your love story is lovely. Your caseworker just can't read it yet. Here's what to send, how much of it, and how to turn three years of messages into evidence the Home Office can actually use.

The short answer

You don't have to send WhatsApp messages with a UK spouse or partner visa application. But if you do, and they're in a language other than English or Welsh, they need a full certified English translation, because a caseworker can't weigh evidence they can't read. Send a dated sample from across your relationship (usually 10 to 30 pages), not your entire chat history. Ours cost £17.99 per page, delivered within 24 working hours.

Here's a scene we see every week. A couple has been together for years: long-distance calls, a wedding with 300 guests, a chat history so long it has its own weather system. Then they read the spouse visa guidance, panic about the words "genuine and subsisting", and wonder whether they need to translate every single "good morning ❤️" since 2021.

Deep breath. You don't. Nobody at the Home Office wants 4,000 messages. What they want is a clear, dated story a stranger can follow, in a language they can read. Let's build that.

Does the Home Office Need Translations of WhatsApp Messages?

If you send them and they aren't in English or Welsh, yes. The UK Immigration Rules (paragraph 39B) set out what a translation has to include: a date, confirmation that it's accurate, the translator's or translation company's full name and signature, and their contact details. Applications made from inside the UK, such as extensions and ILR, also need certification by a qualified translator with their credentials.

Chats aren't on any official checklist, so nobody will reject you for leaving them out. But think about it from the caseworker's side. An untranslated screenshot in Urdu, Thai or Portuguese is, to them, a pretty picture of speech bubbles. It can't prove anything. Translated, the same screenshot shows that you planned a visit, met each other's parents and argued about whose turn it was to book the flights. That's what a real relationship looks like.

Not sure what else the application needs?

Our UK spouse visa guide for 2026 covers the full picture: the relationship rules, the £29,000 income requirement, English, housing and fees. For the document-by-document translation list, see which spouse visa documents need translating.

What Counts as Relationship Evidence?

Anything that shows a stranger you're a real couple who stay in touch and have a life together. The usual suspects:

Messaging apps (WhatsApp, WeChat, Viber, Telegram, LINE, KakaoTalk)

The big one. Regular, dated contact over months or years is exactly what a caseworker wants to see, especially if you've spent time living in different countries.

Call logs

Usually just names, dates and durations, so there's often little to translate. If the app labels are in another language, a translation keeps things clear.

Letters, cards and postcards

Old-fashioned, and caseworkers like them for exactly that reason. A postmark is a date nobody can argue with.

Messages and letters from family

A note from your in-laws welcoming you to the family, or wedding invitations. These are supporting evidence, not essentials.

Social media posts and comments

Posts about each other, anniversary messages and comments from friends. A screenshot with the date showing works best.

If you've lived together, the heavy hitters are joint tenancy agreements and bills at the same address. They often say more than a hundred messages. Our guides to utility bills as cohabitation evidence and the unmarried partner visa explain how to use them. Chats are where you fill the gaps, especially the stretches you spent apart.

How Many Messages Should You Translate?

Enough to tell the story. Not so many that the caseworker needs a holiday afterwards. The trick is spread, not volume: a few pages from each chapter of your relationship beat 200 pages from one very chatty month. Here's a sample plan most couples can adapt:

A sensible chat sample

How you met and the early days
2 to 4 pages from your first weeks of chatting
Planning visits and trips
2 to 4 pages showing you arranged to see each other
The big moments
2 to 4 pages around the proposal, engagement or wedding
Life apart (if you've had any)
A few pages per period you lived in different countries
Recent, ordinary contact
2 to 4 pages from the last few months. Dull is good. Dull is real.

That lands most couples somewhere between 10 and 30 pages. Long-distance relationships, or relationships with long gaps to account for, often need a few more. If you have an immigration adviser, ask them how much they'd like to see. They know your case better than any blog post.

And a gentle word on what to skip. The voice note where you sing happy birthday off-key? Charming. Not evidence. The 2am argument about whose turn it was to call? Real, but you're allowed to choose a different day.

How to Export WhatsApp, WeChat or Viber Chats for Translation

Whatever app you use, the goal is the same: pages where the names, dates and times are visible, in date order. A few tips:

  • Screenshots are the simplest. Make sure each one shows the date header, or the date appears somewhere in the conversation.
  • Export or print to PDF works well for long stretches of chat. WhatsApp's own "Export chat" gives you a text file, which you can open and save as a PDF.
  • Keep whole conversations. Cropping single lines out of the middle of a chat can look edited. Leaving out a whole day is fine.
  • Combine everything into one PDF in date order. One tidy file is easier to order, easier to check and easier for the caseworker to follow.

How Much Does It Cost to Translate Chat Evidence?

We price per page: £17.99 per page for standard delivery within 24 working hours, or £29.99 per page for rush delivery within 8 hours. No minimum and nothing added at checkout. Some quick maths:

10 pages of chats
£179.90 standard
20 pages of chats
£359.80 standard
30 pages of chats
£539.70 standard

Upload your PDF and you'll see the exact page count, price and guaranteed delivery date before you pay. If you're also translating a marriage certificate or bank statements, put them in the same order so everything arrives together. Our guides on how many bank statements to translate and what UK visa translation costs help you budget for the whole application.

A tip from experience: translate your evidence once it's final. Choose your sample, sleep on it, then order. Paying to translate a conversation you later decide to drop is nobody's idea of romance.

What Does a Certified Chat Translation Look Like?

You get one PDF by email with three parts: a dated certification page confirming the translation is complete and accurate, with our company and contact details; your original screenshots or export; and the English translation.

In the translation, every message keeps its sender, date and time, so the conversation reads exactly like the original, just in English. Lines that were already in English stay as they are. Emojis don't need translating, so your hearts, laughing faces and slightly unhinged sticker choices stay put.

How to Get Your Relationship Evidence Translated

1

Pick a representative sample

Choose conversations spread across your whole relationship, with dates showing: the early days, planning visits, big moments and recent everyday contact. Most couples end up with 10 to 30 pages.

2

Export or screenshot your chats

Use the app's export or print feature, or take screenshots where the names, dates and times are visible. Keep everything in date order.

3

Put it all in one PDF

One tidy, chronological PDF is easier for you, for us, and for the caseworker. Your phone's print-to-PDF option works fine.

4

Upload for an instant quote

Upload the PDF, choose the language and see the exact page count, price and guaranteed delivery date before you pay.

5

Receive your certified translation

You get one PDF by email: the certification page, your original chats and the English translation, ready to upload with your application.

Applying in the US? Same Idea, Stricter Rule

If you're filing an I-130 or a K-1 fiancé(e) petition, USCIS also wants evidence of a bona fide relationship, and it's stricter about language: every supporting document that isn't in English must come with a complete English translation, certified by the translator as complete and accurate and competent in both languages. Messages in another language count. Our US price is $23.99 per page, and our USCIS translation requirements guide has the details.

Relationship Evidence Translation: FAQs

Do I have to send WhatsApp messages with my spouse visa application?

No. There is no rule that says you must send chats. They are one way of showing that you stay in touch, alongside visits, flights, photos and, if you live together, joint bills and a shared tenancy. But if you do decide to send messages and they are in a language other than English or Welsh, translate them, because a caseworker can't give weight to something they can't read.

Do translated messages need to be certified?

The Immigration Rules (paragraph 39B) say a translation must be dated, confirm it is accurate, and carry the translator's or translation company's full name, signature and contact details. In-country applications such as extensions and ILR also need certification by a qualified translator with their credentials. Our certified translations include all of that, so you don't need to work out which category you fall into.

How many messages should I translate?

A representative sample, not your entire chat history. Pick conversations spread across the whole relationship, with the dates visible: early days, planning visits, big moments such as the proposal or the wedding, and recent everyday contact. For most couples that comes to somewhere between 10 and 30 pages. Ask your immigration adviser if you have one, because they know your case.

Can I leave out the private bits?

Yes, you choose what to send. The cleanest way is to pick whole conversations or whole days rather than cropping lines out of the middle of a chat, so nothing looks edited. A caseworker would much rather see a tidy sample than every message you've ever sent.

Our chats mix English and another language. What happens to the English lines?

They stay exactly as they are. The translator translates the foreign-language messages and keeps the English ones in place, so the conversation still reads in order. Emojis don't need translating either.

Can you translate voice notes?

We translate written documents, so voice notes aren't something we can certify. In practice the written messages around a call or voice note usually show the same thing, and caseworkers work from documents anyway.

Do love letters and cards count as evidence?

They can, especially if they are dated or arrived by post with a postmark. Like chats, they are supporting evidence rather than a requirement, and anything in another language needs a translation if you include it.

How much does it cost to translate relationship evidence?

£17.99 per page, delivered within 24 working hours, or £29.99 per page for rush delivery within 8 hours. A 20-page sample of chats costs £359.80. You see the exact page count, price and delivery date before you pay.

This guide is general information, not legal advice. What evidence suits your application depends on your circumstances, so check the current Home Office guidance or speak to a regulated immigration adviser.
