How Much Does Spouse Visa Translation Cost? Three Real Examples

The visa fee is printed on gov.uk. The translation bill is the bit nobody can tell you until they see your paperwork. So let's look at three typical couples, count their pages, and add up exactly what they pay.

The short answer

Spouse visa translation cost depends on pages, not documents. At £17.99 per page (delivered within 24 working hours), a light pack with just a marriage certificate and a chat sample comes to about £215.88. Add a previous divorce and it's nearer £359.80. If the sponsor's payslips and bank statements are in another language, expect 35 to 40 pages, or roughly £665.63. The financial evidence is almost always the biggest slice.

Here's a conversation we have most weeks. Someone asks, "How much to translate my spouse visa documents?" and we ask back, "How many pages?" There's a pause. Then: "Er. A marriage certificate. And some bank stuff. Possibly a shoebox."

Fair enough. Nobody counts their paperwork for fun. But because certified translation is priced per page, the shoebox decides the bill. The good news: most of the pages are predictable once you know which rules produce them. Let's count.

What Drives the Cost of Spouse Visa Translation?

Three things, in order of how much they move the total:

  • Where the money is. If the sponsor is paid by a UK employer into a UK account, the financial evidence is already in English and costs nothing to translate. If the income or savings sit abroad, the payslips and statements become the bulk of your pages.
  • How much relationship evidence you send. Chats, letters and photos with captions are optional, but most couples include some. Ten pages and fifty pages tell the same story; only one of them needs a bigger budget.
  • Your history. A previous marriage means a divorce decree or death certificate. Children from the relationship mean birth certificates. Each one adds a page or three.

The language itself doesn't change the price with us. Urdu, Portuguese, Thai or Polish all cost the same per page, from a list of over 200 languages.

What Do the Rules Actually Make You Translate?

The translation rule for family visas sits in Appendix FM-SE of the Immigration Rules (paragraph 1(j)). If a specified document isn't in English or Welsh, you send the original and a full translation. The translation must be dated, confirm it's accurate, and carry the translator's or translation company's full name, signature and contact details. If you're applying from inside the UK, it also needs certification by a qualified translator with their credentials.

Note the word full. You can't save money by translating only the salary line on a payslip or the closing balance on a statement. Where you save money is in choosing which documents to send, and the rules are surprisingly specific about that:

  • Salaried income: payslips covering the 6 months before the application (where the sponsor has been with the same employer that long), personal bank statements for the same period showing the salary going in, and a letter from the employer.
  • Cash savings: bank statements showing the money has been held for the 6 months before the application, plus a declaration of where the savings came from.
  • The threshold: the sponsor needs a gross annual income of at least £29,000, or savings of £16,000 plus 2.5 times any shortfall in income.

Spouse Visa Translation Cost: Three Worked Examples

These are typical shapes we see, with realistic page counts. Your numbers will differ, but one of these will probably look familiar. Prices are at our standard rate of £17.99 per page, with the rush rate of £29.99 per page shown for comparison.

Couple A: the light pack

Married abroad, the sponsor works for a UK employer and is paid in pounds, so all the money evidence is already in English. Only the wedding paperwork and a sample of chats need translating.

DocumentPagesStandard
Marriage certificate (front and back)2£35.98
Relationship evidence: dated chat sample10£179.90
Total12£215.88

Rush delivery within 8 hours: £359.88

Couple B: the second marriage

The applicant was married before, so the divorce papers come along too. The sponsor's income is UK-based. A longer chat sample covers a stretch of living in different countries.

DocumentPagesStandard
Marriage certificate2£35.98
Previous divorce decree3£53.97
Relationship evidence: chats and letters15£269.85
Total20£359.80

Rush delivery within 8 hours: £599.80

Couple C: the money is abroad

The sponsor has been working overseas and is coming back to the UK with their partner, so the salary evidence is foreign: six months of payslips, the matching bank statements and an employer letter, all in another language.

DocumentPagesStandard
Marriage certificate2£35.98
Payslips, 6 months6£107.94
Salary bank statements, 6 months12£215.88
Employer letter2£35.98
Relationship evidence: chat sample15£269.85
Total37£665.63

Rush delivery within 8 hours: £1109.63

Spot the pattern? Couple C pays roughly three times what Couple A pays, and nearly all of the difference is money evidence. Their relationship isn't three times as complicated. Their sponsor just got paid in a different language.

A word on page counts for statements. A monthly statement for a quiet account can be one page; a busy current account can be three or four. That's why we put 6 months of statements at 12 pages above, and why our guide to how many bank statements to translate gives a range rather than one number. Payslips are kinder: usually one page each.

How Do I Estimate My Own Page Count?

Grab a pen and the back of an envelope (an English one, ideally). Count the physical pages of every non-English document you plan to send, front and back separately if both sides have text. Then use these rough guides:

  • Marriage, birth, divorce or death certificate: 1 to 3 pages each
  • Payslips: about 1 page per month, so 6 for six months
  • Bank statements: 1 to 4 pages per month, so 6 to 24 for six months
  • Employer letter or contract extract: 1 to 3 pages
  • Relationship evidence sample: 10 to 30 pages for most couples

Multiply by £17.99 and you have your budget. Or skip the envelope entirely: upload the files and the quote counts the pages for you, with the exact price and delivery date shown before you pay. Nothing gets added at checkout.

How Can I Reduce My Spouse Visa Translation Cost?

Without cutting corners the caseworker will notice, here's where the savings are:

  • Send the period the rules ask for. Six months of payslips means six, not twelve. Extra months don't earn extra credit, but they do earn extra pages.
  • Ask your bank for an English statement. Some banks abroad will issue statements or a balance letter in English. If yours will, that's a page you don't need translated. If it won't, no harm in asking.
  • Choose a chat sample, not the archive. A dated sample spread across your relationship tells the story. Our WhatsApp evidence guide shows how to pick 10 to 30 pages that do the job.
  • Leave English documents out of the upload. UK payslips, a UK tenancy agreement or an English-language certificate don't need translating at all.
  • Skip the notary. Appendix FM-SE doesn't ask for notarised translations. Our guide to notarised vs certified translation explains when notarisation actually matters (rarely, for a UK visa).

One thing not to trim: pages of a document you're relying on. A statement with page 2 missing invites the question of what was on page 2.

Standard or Rush: Which Should You Pick?

Standard delivery is within 24 working hours at £17.99 per page. Rush is within 8 hours at £29.99 per page. On Couple C's 37 pages, that's the difference between £665.63 and £1109.63.

Most couples don't need rush. Spouse visa applications take weeks to prepare, so ordering your translations a few days before you submit is plenty. Rush earns its keep when something is genuinely urgent: a document arrived late, or a deadline moved. If that's you, our guide to rush translation for a visa deadline walks through the timing.

Will I Pay for Translations Again at the Extension?

Partly. The first spouse visa lasts up to 2 years and 9 months, then you extend from inside the UK. The marriage certificate hasn't changed, so a translation that met the in-country standard (certification by a qualified translator, with credentials) can usually go in again. Ours include that from the start.

What does change is the money evidence. Fresh payslips and statements for the latest 6 months mean fresh translations, unless by then the sponsor is paid in the UK. Our guide to documents to translate when extending your UK visa covers the rest. Keep your certified PDFs somewhere safe; future you will be grateful.

How to Keep Your Translation Bill Down

1

List the documents that aren't in English

Go through the spouse visa checklist and pull out only the documents in another language: certificates, foreign financial evidence and any relationship evidence you have chosen to send.

2

Trim to the period the rules ask for

Six months of payslips and matching bank statements for salaried income, six months of statements for savings, and a dated sample of chats rather than the full history.

3

Combine each document into one PDF

Scan front and back, keep pages in order and put each document in one clean PDF so nothing gets missed or counted twice.

4

Upload for an instant quote

Upload the files, choose the language and see the exact page count, price and guaranteed delivery date before you pay.

5

Receive your certified translations

Each translation arrives by email as one PDF: the certification page, your original document and the English translation, ready to upload with the application.

Spouse Visa Translation Cost: FAQs

How much does spouse visa translation cost?

It depends on the number of pages, not the number of documents. Ours cost £17.99 per page for delivery within 24 working hours, or £29.99 per page for rush delivery within 8 hours. A light pack of around 12 pages costs £215.88; a pack with foreign payslips and bank statements can run to 35 to 40 pages.

Which spouse visa documents usually need translating?

Anything you send that isn't in English or Welsh. For most couples that means the marriage certificate, any divorce or death certificate from a previous marriage, and relationship evidence such as chats or letters. If the sponsor's income or savings are held abroad, the payslips, bank statements and employer letter usually make up the biggest share of the pages.

Do I have to translate every page of a bank statement?

Appendix FM-SE asks for a full translation of each specified document that isn't in English or Welsh, so a statement you rely on should be translated in full rather than in extracts. What you can control is which statements you send: cover the period the rules ask for, not the last two years.

Do spouse visa translations need to be notarised?

No. The rules in Appendix FM-SE ask for a dated translation that confirms it is accurate and gives the translator's or translation company's name, signature and contact details. Notarisation isn't part of that, so paying extra for it is usually money you don't need to spend.

Can I reuse my translations when I extend the visa?

Often, yes, for documents that haven't changed, such as the marriage certificate. For an extension from inside the UK, the translation also needs certification by a qualified translator with their credentials. Our certified translations include that, so the same certificate translation can usually be sent again. Newer evidence, like recent payslips, needs a fresh translation.

Is rush delivery worth it for a spouse visa?

Only if you have a real deadline, such as a biometrics appointment or evidence that is about to fall out of date. Standard delivery within 24 working hours is fast enough for most couples, and on a 30-page pack the difference between standard and rush is £360.00.

Do English pages in a mixed document cost anything?

If a whole document is already in English, it doesn't need translating, so leave it out of your upload. If one document mixes languages, for example a bilingual marriage certificate, upload it and the quote shows the exact page count and price before you pay.

This guide is general information, not legal advice. The evidence your application needs depends on your circumstances, so check the current Home Office guidance and Appendix FM-SE, or speak to a regulated immigration adviser.
