Foreign Utility Bill Translation for UK Visa Applications: Complete 2026 Guide
Translate foreign utility bills for UK spouse, unmarried partner and family visa applications. UKVI caseworkers accept certified translations as proof of address and proof that you live together.
Utility bills are one of the most common supporting documents in UK visa applications. They are also one of the most often forgotten at translation time. You may need them to prove you live with your partner, to show your address, or to show you have lived somewhere without a break. Whatever the reason, any bill that is not in English needs a certified English translation. This guide shows you how to translate foreign utility bills for every UK visa route that asks for them.
When UKVI Requires Utility Bill Translations
Foreign utility bills show up in several visa types. They are usually there to back up your address or to show you live with your partner. They are not identity documents:
Spouse / Partner Visa
Bills in both partners' names, or separate bills at the same address, show that your relationship is genuine and that you still live together under Appendix FM.
Unmarried Partner Visa
These are vital for proving the 2 years you must have lived together. UKVI wants bills spread across the 24 months, not bunched near the date you apply.
Settlement (ILR)
Utility bills help show you have lived in the UK without a break. This matters most for partners and family members applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain.
Visitor / Other Routes
Sometimes used as proof of address when you must show a permanent home abroad. This is common for older applicants who have no tenancy agreement.
Cohabitation Evidence: The Unmarried Partner Rule
The unmarried partner route under Appendix FM asks you to prove at least 2 years of living together in a relationship "akin to marriage." Utility bills are the best evidence for this. A third party issues them, and each one carries a date.
UKVI Expectation: Six Evidence Sources Across 24 Months
UKVI normally expects at least 6 pieces of evidence from different sources, spread across the 2 years. Each foreign utility bill needs its own translation. Sending only bills from the last 3 months is a common reason for refusal.
Types of Utility Bills Accepted by UKVI
Not every bill counts as a "utility" bill. UKVI caseworkers use a set definition:
| Bill Type | Accepted? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity | Yes | Gold standard — name and address clearly printed |
| Gas | Yes | Equivalent weight to electricity |
| Water | Yes | Accepted but often less frequent (quarterly/annual) |
| Landline / Broadband | Yes | Internet and telephone count as utilities |
| Council Tax / Property Tax | Yes | Very strong evidence — government-issued |
| Mobile Phone Bills | Weak | Counts less — a mobile number is not tied to an address |
| TV Subscription (Netflix etc.) | No | Not considered utility bills by UKVI |
What Must Appear on the Translated Bill
A caseworker will only accept the bill as evidence if the translation clearly shows these five things:
- The account holder's full name, matching the passport name of the applicant or sponsor. Names in Cyrillic or Arabic, and names with accents, must be spelled the same way every time.
- The full service address, with the flat or apartment number, street, city, postcode and country. The translation keeps the local address order, and can add a note showing it in UK order if that helps.
- The billing date or statement period, so the caseworker can place the bill on your timeline.
- The provider name and reference, meaning the gas, electricity or water company, often with a tax ID or registration number.
- The amount charged and the usage. These do not prove your address, but leaving them out makes the translation look unfinished.
UKVI Certified Translation Standard
UKVI treats utility bills like any other document. Each translation must include:
- A statement that the translation is an accurate copy of the original document
- The date of translation and the translator's or company's full contact details
- The translator's credentials and signature
- The original document reproduced or attached alongside the translation
Common Mistakes That Cause Refusals
Only translating the first page
Many foreign utility bills run to 2 or 3 pages. The address is usually on page 1, but caseworkers want the whole document translated.
Inconsistent name transliteration
If your passport says "Mehmet" and the bill translation says "Mohamet," the caseworker may think the bill belongs to someone else.
Address formatting that loses meaning
Addresses in Japan, China and Korea run in a different order. The translator must keep that order, or add a clear note about the change.
Bunching all bills near submission
Six bills from the last 3 months do not prove 2 years of living together. UKVI wants evidence from across the whole period you claim.
Our Utility Bill Translation Process
- Upload your bills. Scan or photograph each one clearly. Scan every page of a multi-page bill.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many utility bills do I need for an unmarried partner visa?
There is no fixed number. Home Office guidance suggests at least 6 pieces of evidence from different sources, spread across the 24 months. Ideally your bills come from months spread over that time, not from one run of months.
Can I submit digital utility bills (PDF downloads)?
Yes. Digital bills downloaded from your provider are fine, as long as they clearly show the name, address and billing date. Screenshots from an app are weaker than a downloaded PDF, because they lack the provider branding.
Do bills need to be in both partners' names?
No. UKVI accepts bills in either partner's name, as long as they show the same shared address. Many couples keep all the utilities in one name. That is normal and not a problem.
How recent must utility bills be?
As proof that you live together, they can cover your whole relationship. As proof of address, UKVI usually wants bills from the last 3 months before you apply.
Do I need to translate the bill's terms and conditions?
No. Terms and conditions, adverts and tariff notes can be marked as "[promotional / contractual content omitted]". The translator then focuses on the billing information that matters.
