Unmarried Partner Visa Translation Guide: Proving 2 Years of Cohabitation

The UK Unmarried Partner visa needs proof that you have lived together for at least 2 years, in a relationship akin to marriage. Most couples have that proof in another language. Certified translation is what turns it into evidence UKVI can read.

The Unmarried Partner Route in 60 Seconds

Appendix FM of the UK Immigration Rules lets unmarried couples apply under the Partner route. You must show you have been living together in a relationship akin to marriage or civil partnership for at least 2 years before the date you apply. The financial (£29,000+), English language and accommodation rules are the same as the Spouse visa.

What "Living Together" Means to UKVI

UKVI wants to see one shared home, with both of you living in it. Dating for 2 years and visiting each other is not enough. Your evidence must show:

  • The same address on several separate documents
  • A non-stop period of at least 2 years
  • Evidence spread across the whole period, not bunched together
  • A mix of evidence types — not just one kind

Residence Registration: Country-Specific Gold

In many countries, you must register your address with the local council. These registrations are gold for an Unmarried Partner application. They show both names at one address on a set date. Examples:

Germany — Anmeldung

Every resident must register within 2 weeks of moving. The Meldebescheinigung is the official certificate that you live at a set address.

Spain — Empadronamiento

Registration with the padrón municipal. The certificado de empadronamiento colectivo lists everyone at the address.

Italy — Residenza

The certificato di residenza from the comune. Can be issued as stato di famigliashowing all household members.

Austria — Meldezettel

Central register entry. The Meldebestätigung confirms specific address and date.

Japan — Juminhyo

Resident record from the city office. A juminhyo that lists several residents at the same address is strong evidence.

China — Linshi Juzhu Zheng

Temporary residence permit. The hukou registration is separate, and it shows who lives in the permanent household.

A Residence Certificate Alone Isn't Enough

UKVI wants at least 6 pieces of evidence covering the 2-year period you lived together. Even a perfect Meldebescheinigung counts as one item. Add translated utility bills, joint bank statements and tenancy agreements to build a strong case.

Spacing Your Evidence Over the 2-Year Period

Case workers look for evidence spread across the whole 2 years. They do not want it all from one month. Here is a pattern that works well:

Date RangeExample Evidence
24 months before applicationTenancy agreement start, joint bank account opening
20–18 monthsUtility bill, bank statement pair
15–12 monthsResidence certificate, insurance policy
9–6 monthsUtility bill pair, medical registration
3–1 months before applicationRecent utility bills, bank statements, tenancy renewal

How a Certified Translator Handles Utility Bills

Utility bills all look the same, but they matter. A good translator handles them like this:

  1. Keeps the utility company's logo and header in the same place in the layout.
  2. Translates the billing period, the account holder name(s) and the service address.
  3. Translates the usage summary, the amount due and the payment status.
  4. Leaves out adverts and marketing inserts, with a note saying "promotional content not translated".
  5. Certifies each bill on its own, so you can submit each one as a separate piece of evidence.

Cost-Effective Approach

Paying for 20 near-identical utility bills one by one gets expensive. Many translators offer a "supporting document bundle" rate that costs less than the per-document price. Ask about bulk rates if you have more than 10 similar items.

Common Mistakes in Unmarried Partner Evidence

  1. All the evidence comes from the last 3 months. UKVI wants to see the full 2 years.
  2. Only one type of evidence, such as 20 utility bills. A mix works far better.
  3. Everything is in one partner's name. UKVI wants both names on shared items.
  4. Gaps of more than a few months with no evidence. Case workers treat these as warning signs.
  5. Translations that leave out addresses or dates. This makes the evidence useless.
  6. Machine translation of bills. UKVI rejects translations that are not certified.
  7. Leaving out the residence registration document, if your country issues one. That is often the strongest single item you have.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pieces of evidence do I actually need?

UKVI guidance says "at least six". In practice, most approved applications have 10–20 pieces, spread over the 2 years and taken from 3–5 different categories.

What if I have a short gap in our cohabitation?

Short gaps do not automatically break the 2-year period. An example is one partner going abroad for work or study for a few months. You must explain the gap in a cover letter. Both partners must have planned to live together again.

Do we both need to be named on utility bills?

No, but the balance matters. UKVI wants proof that both partners live at the address. The strongest mix is some bills in your name, some in your partner's name, and ideally one or two in both names.

Is a Lebensgemeinschaft certificate enough on its own?

No. Even an official cohabitation certificate counts as just one piece of evidence. UKVI expects other proof as well, such as bills, bank statements and a tenancy agreement.

Can photos and travel receipts count as evidence?

Photos and travel documents help show the relationship is real. They do not prove you live together. Official documents with both names and one shared address are the backbone of your case. Photos are extra.
