How Many Bank Statements Do You Need to Translate for a UK Visa?
Short answer: not all of them — just the months UKVI asks for. But every page of those statements must be translated in full. And because certified translation is priced per page, your page count is what really drives the cost.
Bank statements are the biggest documents most applicants ever submit. A birth certificate is one page. A six-month statement from a busy current account can easily run to 40, 60, or even 90 pages. So the most practical question people ask before ordering a certified translation is simply: how much of this do I actually have to translate? This guide answers the “how many” and “how much” questions. If you want the full rules on UKVI financial thresholds and the 28-day rule, our complete bank statement translation guide covers those in depth.
The 10-second answer
- You translate only the period UKVI asks for — usually 28 days or 6 months — not your whole banking history.
- Within that period you translate every page in full, including every transaction line.
- Cost is per page. So the real way to save money is to send fewer pages in the first place — not to skip pages.
How many months of statements does UKVI actually want?
The period you need depends on your visa route and how you meet the financial requirement. You only translate statements inside that window. Here is the usual picture. Always check it against the current rules for your own application, because the financial requirement is one of the fussiest parts of the Immigration Rules.
| Route / how you qualify | Statement period usually required | Realistic page range |
|---|---|---|
| Spouse / partner (Appendix FM) — salaried | Most recent 6 months | 12–60+ pages |
| Appendix FM — cash savings route | Continuous 6-month period | 12–40 pages |
| Student maintenance funds | 28 consecutive days | 1–8 pages |
| Skilled Worker (self-funded maintenance) | 28 consecutive days | 1–8 pages |
| Self-employed (Category F / G) | Full last financial year, sometimes 2 years | 40–90+ pages |
| Visitor visa (showing funds) | Usually 3–6 months | 6–40 pages |
There is a clear pattern here. Routes that test income over time, like Appendix FM salaried and self-employment, need long periods and produce the most pages. Routes that test a snapshot of your funds, like Student and Skilled Worker maintenance, only need 28 days and stay short. For the exact meaning of the 28-day window and the maintenance thresholds, see our Appendix FM financial requirement guide.
Translate the window, not the whole account
If your bank prints statements monthly and your route needs 6 months, you translate those six statements. You do not translate the two years of history your bank happens to put in the PDF download. Extra months nobody asked for just add pages and cost, with no benefit.
Do you have to translate every page — and every transaction?
Yes. This is the part applicants get wrong most often, so it is worth being clear. A certified translation must be a complete and faithful copy of the document it stands for. For a bank statement, “complete” means:
- Every page of each statement you submit, in order, with nothing skipped.
- Every transaction line — not just the salary credits or the closing balance.
- The header details: bank name, account holder, account and sort/IBAN numbers, and statement period.
- Any printed footnotes, legends, or terms that appear on the page.
The reason is simple. A caseworker reading a foreign-language statement needs the translation to tell them everything the original tells a native reader. If you translate only the page with your salary, they cannot check that you kept the balance, that no pages are missing, or that there are no large deposits you have not explained. A partial translation looks like incomplete evidence, and incomplete evidence is one of the quieter reasons applications get refused. We list them all in our guide to why UKVI rejects translations.
Don't redact, don't crop, don't summarise
Blacking out transactions, cropping pages, or asking for a “summary translation” all break the completeness rule. If a page is part of your evidence, it gets translated exactly as it is. If you really do not need a page, do not submit it at all. What you cannot do is submit half a page.
What actually drives the page count
Two people applying for the same visa can end up with very different page counts. Here is what makes the difference:
Statement period
The biggest factor. 28 days is usually 1–3 pages. Six months can be anything from 12 to 60+.
Transaction density
A savings account that only receives your salary may fit a month on one page. A current account you use every day can run to several pages a month.
Multiple accounts
If you add up income or savings across two or three accounts, each account adds its own pages to the total.
Joint accounts
A joint statement is not longer on its own. But couples often submit both partners' statements, which doubles the pages.
Summary vs full format
Some banks offer a compact layout that fits more lines on each page. That means fewer pages for the same period.
Spacing and branding
Statements with big headers, adverts, or lots of white space use far more pages than a tight table.
What it costs: certified translation is priced per page
Certified translation is charged per page of the source document. There is no minimum order and no sliding scale. Your total is just your page count times the per-page rate. So the cost is easy to work out once you know how many pages fall inside your window. Here is how it looks at the standard UK rate of £17.99 per page:
| Typical scenario | Pages | UK cost (£17.99/page) |
|---|---|---|
| Student / Skilled Worker 28-day statement | 3 pages | £53.97 |
| Visitor visa, 3 months, light use | 6 pages | £107.94 |
| Spouse visa, 6 months, one account | 12 pages | £215.88 |
| Spouse visa, 6 months, busy current account | 28 pages | £503.72 |
| Self-employed, full financial year | 60 pages | £1,079.40 |
| Self-employed, two accounts, dense | 90 pages | £1,619.10 |
Other markets work the same way, just at the local rate: $23.99 per page for US (USCIS) applications and €20.99 per page for Ireland (ISD). So a 28-page set is about $671.72 in the US or €587.72 in Ireland. If you are in a hurry, a rush service costs more per page (£29.99 in the UK), but the page count still sets the total. Why there's no “bulk discount”
Every page is translated, checked, laid out to match the original, and certified. A 60-page statement really is 60 pages of work. That is why the rate is flat per page and not discounted for volume. The way to control cost is not a discount. It is sending fewer, tighter pages.
How to legitimately reduce pages (and cost)
You cannot cut corners on completeness. But you can create fewer pages in the first place. None of these weaken your evidence:
Submit only the required period
Download exactly the months UKVI asks for, not your whole history. For most people this is the biggest saving of all.
Ask your bank for a compact or consolidated statement
Many banks can issue an official statement in a tighter layout, or one combined 6-month statement, instead of six separate documents with six sets of headers.
Check whether your bank already issues English statements
International and online banks often give you English statements if you ask. Pages already in English need no translation at all.
Use one account where the rules allow
If one account meets the requirement on its own, do not add a second account just to be safe. That only multiplies your pages.
Strip out marketing inserts before counting
Some statement PDFs include adverts or blank pages that are not part of the financial record. They are not evidence, so you do not need to submit or translate them.
The goal is not to send too little. It is to send exactly what the rules ask for, no more and no less. That keeps your application clean for the caseworker, and keeps your translation cost in line with what you really need.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to translate all my bank statements for a UK visa?
No. You only translate the statements that cover the period UKVI asks for on your visa route. That is usually the last 28 days or the last 6 months, not your whole banking history. But inside that window you must translate every page in full, not just the pages that show your salary or balance.
How many months of bank statements do I need for a UK visa?
It depends on the route. Salaried work under Appendix FM usually needs the last 6 months, ending no earlier than 28 days before you apply. The cash savings route needs a continuous 6-month period. Student and Skilled Worker maintenance funds usually need 28 days in a row. Always check the rules for your own visa.
Do I have to translate every transaction on the statement?
Yes. A certified translation must copy the original in full. That means every transaction line, the bank name and logo text, the account holder details, the balances, and any printed terms. If you translate only some lines, it becomes a partial translation, and UKVI can reject it.
Can I translate only the pages that show my salary or balance?
No. Sending only one or two translated pages from a longer statement is a common reason for refusal. The caseworker needs the full statement, with no breaks, so they can check for gaps, missing pages, or large deposits you have not explained. Every page you submit as evidence must be translated.
How much does it cost to translate a 6-month bank statement?
Certified translation is priced per page. At £17.99 per page, a 6-page statement costs £107.94, a 28-page set costs £503.72, and a packed 60-page set costs £1,079.40. There is no minimum order and no discount for volume. So your page count is what really decides the total.
Are online or PDF bank statements accepted by UKVI?
Yes, UKVI accepts online and PDF statements. But you usually need to prove they are genuine, either with a bank stamp or with a supporting letter. The certified translation is made from the same PDF or printout you submit, so the translated page count matches the original.
