Ukrainian Marriage Certificate Translation for UK Visa

Ukrainian nationals in the UK under the Homes for Ukraine scheme and other visa routes often need a certified translation of their Свідоцтво про шлюб (marriage certificate). The war makes documents hard to get, and Cyrillic name spelling needs a specialist.

Ukrainian nationals applying for UK visas often need a certified translation of a marriage certificate. This covers the Ukraine Family Scheme, Homes for Ukraine, UK spouse visas and ILR. The war has made documents hard to reach for many applicants. UKVI has published guidance for Ukrainians who cannot get the usual documents. This guide covers both the translation and the wartime background.

UKVI Flexibility for Ukrainian Applicants

UKVI has confirmed extra flexibility for Ukrainian nationals who cannot reach their documents because of the war. Your marriage certificate may be out of reach because the registry office was destroyed, occupied or closed. In that case UKVI may accept other evidence of the marriage. Speak to an immigration solicitor if this is your position. But if you do have your certificate, it must be certified translated.

The Ukrainian Marriage Certificate: Свідоцтво про шлюб

Ukraine's civil registration system (РАЦС — Реєстр актів цивільного стану) issues the Свідоцтво про шлюб (Svidotstvo pro shlyub — Certificate of Marriage). It is a standard state document printed on secure paper. It records the full names of both spouses, their dates of birth, the date and place of the marriage, and the registry reference number (актовий запис).

From 2020, Ukraine also added electronic civil status records through Diia (Дія), its digital government app. If your paper document is lost or destroyed, you may be able to get an electronic extract (витяг з реєстру) instead.

Cyrillic Transliteration in Ukrainian Documents

Ukrainian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, and several of its letters differ from Russian Cyrillic. The certified translation must spell Ukrainian names using the official Ukrainian romanisation standard (KMU 2010, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine standard). This is the system used in Ukrainian passports.

Ukrainian vs Russian Transliteration — A Common Source of Errors

Ukrainian and Russian share many Cyrillic letters, but they spell them differently in Latin script. The Ukrainian letter Г becomes "H", not "G" as in Russian. The letter И becomes "Y" in Ukrainian, not "I". Here are common examples from names:

  • Наталія → Nataliia (not Nataliya or Natalya)
  • Михайло → Mykhailo (not Mikhail)
  • Олексій → Oleksii (not Aleksiy)

Always send your Ukrainian passport with the documents you want translated. The certified translator will copy the exact spelling from your passport, so your names match for UKVI.

Document Access for Ukrainians Abroad

If you left Ukraine without your marriage certificate, there are several ways to get a copy:

How to Get a Replacement Ukrainian Marriage Certificate

  • Diia app — you may be able to get an electronic extract if your record is in the digital register
  • Ukrainian consulate in the UK — it can help you get certified copies from Ukrainian registries
  • Contact the local РАЦС (registry office) — if the office in your city is still open, it can issue a duplicate
  • Other evidence — if you truly cannot get the documents, UKVI guidance allows proof such as photos, witness statements or religious certificates

Ukrainian Documents and Apostille

Ukraine is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine can apostille Ukrainian civil status documents. But UKVI does not normally ask for an apostille on Ukrainian documents. For most UK visa applications the certified translation on its own is enough. ILR applicants should still check with their immigration adviser.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm on the Homes for Ukraine scheme. Do I need a certified translation of my marriage certificate?

Yes, if you are bringing a spouse or family member to the UK under the Homes for Ukraine or Ukraine Family Scheme. The Home Office needs certified translations of any Ukrainian-language document that proves your family link. A marriage certificate proves you and your spouse are married, so it is a core document and must be certified translated.

My marriage certificate was issued in a region now under Russian occupation. Can it still be used?

Yes. Ukrainian civil status records issued before the occupation are valid Ukrainian state documents in law. If you have the paper certificate, we can certify translate it in the normal way. If you cannot reach it, contact the Ukrainian consulate. They can tell you how to get a duplicate from central Ukrainian records.

My Ukrainian marriage certificate also has a Russian-language section from the Soviet era. Which language is translated?

Older Ukrainian civil status documents from before 1991 may be all in Russian, or in both Ukrainian and Russian. The certified translation covers the whole document as it appears. Documents issued after independence are in Ukrainian only. For Soviet-era documents, a translator qualified in Russian should handle the Russian-only parts.
