Uzbek Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026
Uzbek documents come in two scripts. Newer ones use Latin script, following the 1993 reform. Older ones use Russian Cyrillic. Uzbekistan has been in the Apostille Convention since 15 April 2012, so Uzbek documents take a single apostille rather than the old legalisation chain.
The Uzbek community in the UK keeps growing. More Uzbek nationals now apply for student, skilled worker and spouse visas. Their civil documents bring one special problem. After independence in 1991, Uzbekistan began moving from the Russian Cyrillic alphabet to a new Latin one. The change has been slow, so the script depends on when the document was issued. Older papers are often in Russian Cyrillic. Newer ones use the Uzbek Latin alphabet.
Uzbekistan is NOT in the Apostille Convention
Uzbekistan has not joined the Hague Apostille Convention. So Uzbek documents for a UK visa go through the legalisation chain instead. First the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs stamps them, then the UK Embassy in Tashkent. Start this early, well before you apply. Trade and study links between the two countries are growing, so the embassy in Tashkent handles a lot of these requests.

Uzbek Script History: Latin vs. Cyrillic
You can see Uzbekistan's language history in its civil documents. Work out which script your document uses first. That decides the kind of translator you need:
Pre-1993: Soviet-Era Russian Cyrillic
Documents from the Soviet period, and for some years after independence up to roughly 1995–2000, are in Russian or Uzbek Cyrillic. Russian was the official language of the Soviet Union. So many papers, including ZAGS civil registry certificates, are in Russian rather than Uzbek. These need a Russian or Uzbek Cyrillic translator.
Post-1993: New Uzbek Latin Script
Since the 1993 reform, Uzbekistan has been moving to a new Latin-based Uzbek alphabet. Birth, marriage and death certificates issued after about 2000–2005 usually use it. This alphabet is not the same as standard Latin, so you need a translator qualified in modern Uzbek.
Bilingual Documents
Documents from the changeover years, roughly 1995 to 2010, can carry both Uzbek Latin and Russian Cyrillic text. Both parts must be translated in full.
The ZAGS System
Uzbekistan registers births, marriages and deaths through the ZAGS system. In Russian that is Записи Актов Гражданского Состояния, the Registry of Civil Status Records. In Uzbek it is Fuqarolik holati aktlarini yozish. The system came from the Soviet Union and is still used in Uzbekistan and other former Soviet countries.
ZAGS offices work at district level. They register births, marriages, deaths and divorces. Their certificates are the standard civil documents for a UK visa application.
Getting Uzbek Documents for UK Visa Applications
- Contact the ZAGS office in Uzbekistan where the event was registered
- Or ask the Uzbek Embassy in London for consular copies
- Ask for certified copies (nusxa), not the original certificates
- Get them legalised by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then by the UK Embassy in Tashkent
- Send the legalised document for certified English translation
The FUQAROLIK Identity Document
Since independence, Uzbekistan has issued a national identity document known informally as the FUQAROLIK document. Fuqarolik means "citizenship" in Uzbek. It is a biometric ID card showing the holder's full name, date of birth, place of birth and citizenship. It is printed in Uzbek Latin script, and people need it for many official tasks inside Uzbekistan.
Uzbek nationals travel abroad on a passport, not the FUQAROLIK card. You can still send the card as extra proof of identity with a UK visa application. If you do, it needs a certified translation.
The Growing Uzbek Diaspora in the UK
The Uzbek community in the UK grows year by year. Most arrive as students at UK universities. More now come as skilled workers in IT, engineering and medicine. Ties between the two countries have grown stronger, with a new partnership agreement and more visa routes.
Many Uzbeks who came to study have since moved onto skilled worker visas. They now sponsor family members back home. That has created strong demand for certified translation of Uzbek civil documents for spouse and family visas.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Uzbek birth certificate is in Russian Cyrillic from the Soviet era. Do I need a Russian translator or an Uzbek translator?
If the document is in Russian, as many Soviet-era ZAGS certificates are, you need a Russian to English translator. If it is in Uzbek Cyrillic, used for some Soviet-period documents, you need a translator qualified in Uzbek. Check the language carefully. The ZAGS office name and the header usually make it clear. If you are unsure, send us the document for a check before you order.
How long does legalisation of Uzbek documents take?
Legalisation through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tashkent and the UK Embassy usually takes 3–6 weeks. It can take longer when demand is high. Start at least two months before you plan to apply. The Uzbek Embassy in London can tell you the current waiting times.
