Azerbaijani Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026

Modern Azerbaijani documents use a Latin alphabet brought in during 1991. Older Soviet-era papers use Cyrillic. Both need a certified English translation for a UK visa. Azerbaijan has been in the Apostille Convention since 2004, which makes proving your documents easier.

Azerbaijan is an unusual case for document translation. In 1991 the country moved from the Soviet Cyrillic script to a Latin alphabet. The change was mostly done by the mid-1990s. So if you were born before then, your birth certificate may be in Cyrillic Azerbaijani while your newer papers are in Latin script. Both kinds need a certified translation by a specialist for a UK visa.

Azerbaijan Has Been in the Apostille Convention Since 2004

Azerbaijan joined the Hague Apostille Convention on 4 March 2004. The Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan can apostille public documents. An apostilled document plus a certified English translation meets UKVI’s proof rules. The Asan Xidmêt (Easy Service) centres also apostille civil registry documents.

Key Azerbaijani Civil Documents for UK Visa Applications

Birth Certificate (doğum haqqında šæhadætnamæ)

Issued by the Civil Registration Authority. New certificates are in Latin-script Azerbaijani. Soviet-era ones are in Cyrillic Azerbaijani, and sometimes in Russian. Both need a certified translation.

Marriage Certificate (nikah haqqında šæhadætnamæ)

Issued by civil registry offices or Asan Xidmêt service centres. It shows both spouses’ full names, including patronymic endings, and the date and place of the marriage. You need it for spouse and family visa applications.

National ID Card (šæxsiyyæt væsiqæsi)

The biometric national ID card shows the holder’s name in Latin-script Azerbaijani, plus an AZE identifier. You need a certified translation if you send the ID card to UKVI as supporting evidence.

Soviet-Era Documents

Papers issued before the mid-1990s may be in Russian (Cyrillic) or in Cyrillic Azerbaijani. You need a translator who knows the right language and script. When you order, tell us whether your document is Azerbaijani Cyrillic or Russian.

Asan Xidmêt Service Centres

Asan Xidmêt (ASAN Service, or “Easy Service” in Azerbaijani) is a network of government service centres in Azerbaijan. They handle many civil paperwork tasks, including:

  • Issuing birth and marriage certificates
  • Apostille on civil registry documents
  • Issuing and renewing national ID cards
  • Issuing passports

If you are in Azerbaijan, the Asan Xidmêt centres in Baku, Sumqayıt and other cities are the fastest way to get apostilled civil registry documents ready for translation.

Azerbaijani Naming Conventions and Patronymics

Name ElementMale FormFemale FormMeaning
First name (ad)ElçinAytənGiven name
Patronymic (ata adı + suffix)Əliyev oğlu (son of Əliyev)Əliyeva qızı (daughter of Əliyev)Father’s surname + oglu (male) or qızı (female)
Surname (soyad)ƏliyevƏliyevaFamily name; feminine form ends in -a

Azerbaijani documents usually show three parts: first name, patronymic and surname. Women use the female form of the surname. Keeping all three parts matters. If the translation leaves out the patronymic, your name may not match your passport.

Latin vs Cyrillic: Script Transition Issues

The change of alphabet is a common reason names do not match. Someone born in 1988 may have a Cyrillic birth certificate with one spelling and a Latin-script passport with another. For example:

  • Cyrillic: Гусейн (Huseyn) → Latin: Hüseyn (with umlaut)
  • Cyrillic: Алиев → Latin: Əliyev (with schwa character)
  • Russian transliteration on old documents: Alieva → Azerbaijani Latin: Əliyeva

Where this happens, the certified translation should carry a translator’s note. It should explain the change of alphabet and confirm that the two spellings are the same name.

Frequently Asked Questions

My birth certificate is in Cyrillic Azerbaijani but my passport is in Latin. Is this a problem for UKVI?

No. This is a well-known result of Azerbaijan’s change of alphabet, and UKVI caseworkers who know the region expect it. The important thing is that your certified translator adds a note. The note explains the change of script and confirms that both documents refer to the same person. A translator who works with Azerbaijani documents does this as a matter of course.

Can Asan Xidmêt apostille a birth certificate from the Soviet era?

Asan Xidmêt and the Ministry of Justice can apostille civil registry records that are still valid. For a Soviet-era original, you may first need a new certified copy from the archive registry. That copy can then be apostilled. The Archive of Civil Registration Acts holds the old records in Azerbaijan. Allow extra time for archive requests.
