Armenian Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026
Armenian civil documents use the Armenian script (Հայերեն). It is neither Cyrillic nor Latin. For a UK visa, every Armenian-language document needs a certified translation by a specialist. Since 2020 you can also get an apostille before you send the papers to UKVI.
Many Armenians live in the United Kingdom, and Armenian nationals apply for all kinds of UK visas, from visitor visas to settlement. Armenian documents are hard to translate because the Armenian alphabet, sometimes called Aybuben, is used only for Armenian. You need a translator who knows it well. Armenia joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2020, so legalisation is now much simpler than the old consular chain.
Armenia Joined the Apostille Convention in 2020
Since April 2020, Armenian public documents can be apostilled. The Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia issues the apostille for civil registry documents. An apostilled Armenian document plus a certified English translation meets UKVI’s proof rules. You no longer need the full consular legalisation chain.
Key Armenian Civil Documents for UK Visa Applications
Birth Certificate (ծննդյան վկայական)
Issued by the Civil Status Acts Registration Agency (ՔԿԱԳ — Qaghaqaciakan Karag Amboghjutyunner Gaghtnarvarchutyun). It shows the name in Armenian script, the date and place of birth, the parents’ names, and registration details. Every field needs a certified translation.
Marriage Certificate (ամուսնության վկայական)
Also issued by the Civil Status Acts Registration Agency. It shows both spouses’ names and patronymics, the date and place of the marriage, and the witnesses. You need it for spouse and family visa applications.
National Passport Data Page
The Armenian biometric passport shows the holder’s name in Armenian script and in Latin letters. Translating the data page confirms the Armenian name and its official Latin spelling, so UKVI can check your identity.
Divorce Certificate (ամուսնալուծության վկայական)
If you have been divorced, this certificate from the Civil Status Agency proves that the earlier marriage has ended. Many family visa applications need it when you declare a past marriage.
The Armenian Script: Why Specialist Translators Are Essential
The Armenian alphabet (Aybuben) is one of the oldest in the world. It was created in the 5th century CE. It has 38 letters and is used only for Armenian. Unlike Cyrillic or Arabic, it is not linked to any other alphabet in common use today. This means:
- A translator who knows Russian or Arabic cannot translate Armenian. The alphabets are completely different.
- You need a specialist Armenian-to-English translator.
- Armenian names are written in Latin letters using the ISO 9985 standard, though people spell them in other ways too.
Armenian Names and Patronymics
| Name Element | Example (Male) | Example (Female) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| First name (անուն) | Armen | Ani | Given at birth; appears on all documents |
| Patronymic (հայրանուն) | Armen Harutyuni (son of Harutyun) | Ani Harutyuni (daughter of Harutyun) | Father’s given name + -i suffix; used in formal documents |
| Surname (ազգանուն) | Petrosyan | Petrosyan | Family name; usually ends in -yan/-ian |
Armenian passports usually show three parts: first name, patronymic (as a middle name) and surname. Birth and marriage certificates may set them out in a different way. Names often differ between documents because the patronymic is included on one and left off another. A translator’s note should explain this.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Armenian birth certificate has my name romanised on it. Do I still need a certified translation?
Yes. A name printed in Latin letters by the issuing office is not a certified translation. UKVI needs a certified translation from a professional translator, with a certification statement. The translation should confirm the name in Armenian script and show that the Latin spelling matches the passport.
My document is from Armenia but pre-dates independence (Soviet era). Is it still in Armenian script?
Soviet-era documents from the Armenian SSR were issued in Armenian and in Russian (Cyrillic). Both parts may need translating. Make sure your translator knows both languages, or use two translators who each certify their own section.
