Turkish Marriage Certificate Translation for UK Spouse Visa

Turkish marriage documents — the Evlenme Cüzdanı (Marriage Booklet) and the Aile Cüzdanı (Family Register) — use the Latin alphabet. But they are written in Turkish, so every UK visa application needs a certified translation.

Turkey has used the Latin alphabet since Atatürk's 1928 language reform. That can make Turkish documents look partly readable to English speakers. They are not. Turkish is a separate language, and UKVI needs a certified translation. Turkish nationals apply for UK Spouse visas, Skilled Worker visas, and family settlement. In relationship-based applications, the marriage certificate is the key document.

Turkish Uses Latin Script — But Still Requires Translation

Turkish uses Latin letters, but the words are completely different from English. So Turkish marriage documents need a certified English translation for UKVI, just like Arabic or Chinese documents. Turkish also has special letters (ç, ş, ğ, ı, ö, ü). Your translator must handle these the same way throughout.

The Two Main Turkish Marriage Documents

Evlenme Cüzdanı (Marriage Booklet)

This is the original marriage document, given to you at the civil ceremony. It is a small booklet from the civil registry office (Nüfus Müdürlüğü). It records the marriage, and sometimes early family details. Many couples keep it from their wedding day, but it may not be up to date.

Aile Cüzdanı (Family Register)

This is a family register booklet. It records the marriage and later family events too — births of children, deaths, and divorce. UKVI often prefers it, because it shows the whole family picture in one document. The civil registry issues it when you ask for it.

Which Document to Submit: Evlenme Cüzdanı or Aile Cüzdanı?

If you have both, send both with certified translations. The Evlenme Cüzdanı is the original marriage document. The Aile Cüzdanı is the current family register, showing where the marriage stands now and any children. UKVI caseworkers know both formats. If you have only one, send that one — both are accepted.

What Turkish Marriage Documents Contain

A typical Turkish Evlenme Cüzdanı or Aile Cüzdanı holds the details below. All of them must be translated:

  • Full names of both spouses (including maiden name for the wife)
  • Dates and places of birth of both spouses
  • Father's and mother's names for both parties
  • Date and place of the civil marriage ceremony
  • Names of witnesses
  • The civil registry office's details and official stamp
  • Registration (cilt) number and record (sıra) number
  • Turkish ID (TC Kimlik) numbers (if present)
  • Children's names and birth details (in the Aile Cüzdanı)

Turkish Naming Conventions

Turkish names are fairly simple — a first name, then a family surname. Surnames were introduced in 1934. Even so, a few naming points matter for UKVI applications:

  • Women's surnames: In the past, Turkish women took their husband's surname when they married. Since 2014, Turkish law lets a woman put her maiden name before the married name. Older documents often show only the married name. Newer ones may show both. The translation should make this clear.
  • Special characters: Names with ğ (soft g), ı (dotless i), ş, ç, ö, ü must be written the same way every time. The dotless ı and the dotted İ are different letters in Turkish, which matters in names.
  • Father's name: Turkish documents often give the father's name — "[name] oğlu/kızı" (son/daughter of). You see this on older civil records.

Getting Turkish Documents and Apostille

Turkey is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. You get an apostille from the provincial governorship (Valilik). For court documents, you get it from the court. Turkish consulates in the UK can also help you get civil registry documents.

Getting Turkish Marriage Documents from the UK

  • Turkish Consulate General in London: can help you get civil registry extracts
  • E-Devlet (e-government portal): Turkish citizens abroad can get some civil registry documents online
  • Family members in Turkey: can apply directly to the Nüfus Müdürlüğü (civil registry office)
  • UKVI does not normally ask for an apostille on standard visa applications

Frequently Asked Questions

I have a Turkish marriage certificate but the marriage was at a mosque (not a civil registry). Will UKVI accept it?

UKVI needs proof of a legal marriage. In Turkey, only civil marriage counts in law. A religious ceremony (imam nikahı) is not legally binding on its own without civil registration. So a mosque document alone is not enough. You need the civil marriage document from the Nüfus Müdürlüğü. If you had only a religious ceremony, register the marriage with the civil authorities.

My Aile Cüzdanı shows a child from a previous relationship. Do I translate those pages?

Translate every page that carries information, including the pages about children. UKVI needs the full family picture. Children from earlier relationships matter to the application, so translate all pages that have entries.

My wife's maiden name on the marriage certificate is different from her current surname. Is this a problem?

No. This is normal. Where the document shows both, the certified translation gives the maiden name (kız soyadı) and the married name (evli soyadı). It also makes clear that both names belong to the same person. UKVI caseworkers know that surnames change on marriage.

We were married in Turkey and divorced in the UK. Do I still need to translate the Turkish marriage certificate?

Often, yes. If you are applying on the basis of a new relationship, UKVI needs to see that your earlier marriage has legally ended. You may need to send the translated Turkish marriage certificate together with the UK divorce decree, so the order of events is clear. If UKVI only needs proof of your current marriage, it may ask for that certificate alone.
