Turkish Document Translation for UK Visa Applications
Essential guide for Turkish nationals: Translate your Turkish documents for UK visa applications in 2026.
Do Turkish Citizens Need Document Translation?
Yes. If you're a Turkish national applying for a UK visa, the UK Home Office needs certified English translations of all your Turkish documents. This is true for work visas, student visas, spouse visas, and every other UK visa from Turkey.
UKVI Requirement for Turkish Documents
UK Visas and Immigration needs a certified translation with every document that is not in English or Welsh. So your Turkish documents must be translated and certified by a qualified translator. Many Turkish people live in the UK, and a good translation is key to a successful application.
Common Turkish Documents for UK Visa
Turkish nationals usually need these documents translated for a UK visa:
Nüfus Cüzdanı (Identity Document)
The Turkish identity booklet. It holds your birth and family details, and every visa type needs it.
Doğum Belgesi (Birth Certificate)
Turkish birth certificates, issued by the Nüfus Müdürlüğü (Population Directorate).
Evlilik Cüzdanı (Marriage Certificate)
The Turkish marriage booklet, used for UK spouse visa applications.
Diploma & Transkript (Academic Documents)
Degrees and transcripts from Turkish universities.
Banka Ekstresi (Bank Statement)
Statements from Turkish banks, used to meet the money requirements.
Sabıka Kaydı (Police Certificate)
The criminal record certificate from the Turkish authorities.

Frequently Asked Questions - Turkish Community
Can I translate my own Turkish documents?
No. The Home Office does not accept a translation you did yourself, or one done by a family member, even if you speak both Turkish and English well. You must use a certified professional service that gives UKVI-compliant certification.
Do I need to translate my Nüfus Cüzdanı?
Yes. The Turkish Nüfus Cüzdanı (identity booklet) is one of the most common documents in UK visa applications from Turkey. Every page with writing on it must be translated: personal details, family tree, address, and any stamps or notes.
What about Turkish characters (ğ, ş, ı, ö, ü, ç)?
Professional Turkish translators handle every Turkish letter correctly and spell names and places accurately. For example, "Çağlar" is written properly, not simplified into something else. This matters a lot in visa applications.
Do Turkish documents need apostille for UK visa?
For UK visa applications, you usually do NOT need an apostille on Turkish documents. Turkey and the UK are both in the Hague Convention, but UK visa applications rarely ask for an apostille. The UKVI-certified translation is enough. Do check the rules for your visa type.
How much does Turkish document translation cost?
Turkish document translation costs £17.99 per page for 24-hour delivery, or £29.99 per page for the 8-hour rush service. Most Turkish documents, such as a nüfus cüzdanı or a birth certificate, are 1-2 pages. So the standard service usually costs £17.99-£35.98.
What if my Turkish document has handwritten sections?
Older Turkish documents often have handwritten parts. Professional translators can read handwritten Turkish, as long as it is clear. If a section cannot be read, the translator says so in the certification. Scan at high resolution (300 DPI or more) for the best result.
How Much Does Turkish Document Translation Cost?
Turkish document translation starts at £17.99 per page with 24-hour delivery. A 1-page Nüfus Cüzdanı or birth certificate costs £17.99. A 2-page marriage booklet costs £35.98. There is an 8-hour rush service for tight visa deadlines. That is far cheaper than a solicitor (£80–£150) or the Turkish Consulate, and it meets the same UKVI certification standards.
Why UKVI Rejects Turkish Document Translations
Turkish applicants hit a few common traps. These are the main reasons UKVI rejects a translation:
Turkish special characters incorrectly rendered
Letters like ğ, ş, ı, ö, ü, ç are part of Turkish names, so they cannot be simplified. A name like "Şükrü" must not become "Sukru" if that does not match your passport. UKVI caseworkers check names across all your documents. Any difference leads to a rejection or a request for more information. Always check that your translator keeps the Turkish marks.
Nüfus Cüzdanı pages translated selectively
The Turkish identity booklet has several pages: family tree, address history, and civil status entries. Translating only the personal details page is not enough. UKVI needs every page that has information on it, including marital status entries, children's details, and address notes.
Outdated document version submitted
Turkey has changed its identity documents over the years. The newer chip-based T.C. Kimlik Kartı has replaced many older Nüfus Cüzdanı booklets. UKVI expects up-to-date documents. If you are translating an older booklet, send your current valid ID card too. That stops caseworkers asking whether the document is still valid.
Official stamps and seals not translated
Turkish official documents carry Nüfus Müdürlüğü (Population Directorate) seals and the signatures of authorised officers. The certified translation must describe and translate these. If a translation leaves them blank, or just says "official stamp" without naming the authority, UKVI treats it as incomplete.
Understanding the Turkish Nüfus System
Turkey's Civil Registration System
Turkey's Nüfus (population registry) system is one of the most complete in the world. The Directorate General of Civil Registration and Citizenship (Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık İşleri Genel Müdürlüğü) runs it. It gives every Turkish citizen a T.C. Kimlik Numarası (Turkish Republic Identity Number). This 11-digit national ID is used in all dealings with the state.
The Nüfus system records every life event — birth, marriage, divorce, death — and links it to this number. So any Turkish document you need for a UK visa can be traced back to your identity number. That gives strong proof that it is genuine, which UKVI recognises.
Nüfus Cüzdanı vs T.C. Kimlik Kartı
The old Nüfus Cüzdanı is a booklet. It spreads your family registry details over several pages. The newer T.C. Kimlik Kartı is a chip card the size of a credit card. For UK visas, the booklet holds more personal detail, so it is often more useful to translate. If you only have the card, ask the Nüfus Müdürlüğü for a Nüfus Kayıt Örneği (civil registry extract) as well.
Nüfus Kayıt Örneği (Civil Registry Extract)
A Nüfus Kayıt Örneği is an official extract from your civil registry record, issued by the Nüfus Müdürlüğü. It gives your full name, your parents' names, your date and place of birth, your marital status, and your registered address. For UK visas it is often the most useful Turkish document to translate, because it brings all of this together on one official page.
e-Devlet (e-Government) Documents
Turkey's e-Devlet portal lets citizens download official documents online. These documents carry a QR code and a barcode so they can be checked. UKVI accepts certified translations of them. The translation must say that the document was issued electronically, and it must include the verification code.
Requesting Documents from Abroad
Turkish nationals in the UK can ask the Turkish Consulate General in London for official documents. e-Devlet also covers many document types online. In Turkey, the Nüfus Müdürlüğü in your registered district handles all vital records in person. Allow 1–2 weeks for a postal request through the Consulate.
Turkey's Nüfus (Civil Registry) System: Getting Documents from the UK
It is much easier to get the right documents when you understand how Turkish civil records work. This is true whether you are in Turkey or already in the UK.
How Turkey's Civil Registry System Works
The Directorate General of Civil Registration and Citizenship (Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık İşleri Genel Müdürlüğü — NVİ) runs Turkey's civil registry (Nüfus) for the whole country. Every Turkish citizen gets a T.C. Kimlik Numarası at birth. This 11-digit number links all their civil records: births, marriages, divorces, military service, and address registrations. Because the system is central, you can get any record from any Nüfus Müdürlüğü (Population Directorate) office in Turkey, not only the one in your registered district.
This helps with UK visas. Say your records were registered in Ankara but you live in İstanbul. You can still get certified copies from any local Nüfus Müdürlüğü, or online through e-Devlet.
Using e-Devlet (e-Government Portal) from the UK
Turkey's e-Devlet portal (turkiye.gov.tr) lets Turkish citizens download official civil registry documents without visiting a Nüfus Müdürlüğü. You can get Nüfus Kayıt Örnekleri (civil registry extracts), birth registration records, marital status certificates, and family tree documents. To log in, you need your T.C. Kimlik Numarası and either a registered mobile number or your e-Government login. Each download carries a QR code and a unique reference number. UKVI accepts certified translations of e-Devlet documents. The translation must say the document was issued electronically and include the verification reference.
Requesting Documents Through the Turkish Consulate General in London
Turkish nationals living in the UK can request civil registry documents from the Turkish Consulate General in London (Rutland Gardens, Knightsbridge, SW7). It handles Nüfus Kayıt Örnekleri, birth and marriage certificate extracts, and passport renewals. You can apply in person or by post. Postal requests usually take 2–4 weeks. Some documents can be done the same day if you go in person during consular hours. The Consulate is linked to the NVİ central database, so its documents are genuine official copies, the same as those issued in Turkey.
Nüfus Müdürlüğü (Population Directorate): In-Person Requests in Turkey
If family in Turkey can help, they can collect records from any Nüfus Müdürlüğü office by giving the T.C. Kimlik Numarası. The person asking does not have to be the subject of the record, as long as they are close family: a spouse, parent, or sibling. Documents from a Nüfus Müdürlüğü carry the official seal of that district office, and UKVI accepts them as genuine. Allow 1–2 working days. You do not need notarial registration (noter tasdik) for a UK visa.
Important: Document Currency Requirements
For a UK visa, it is best if your Nüfus Kayıt Örneği or other civil registry extract is less than 6 months old. UKVI does not set a hard limit for Turkish civil records. But caseworkers may question a very old document, above all on marital status, which can change. Ask for fresh copies just before you apply, so they show your position today.
Which UK Visa Types Require Turkish Document Translation?
Turkish nationals apply for many kinds of UK visa. Here is what each one needs translated:
Spouse & Partner Visa
If you are joining a partner in the UK, you need your Evlilik Cüzdanı (marriage booklet) translated, plus the birth certificate of any dependent child. If you were married before, you also need a translation of the divorce certificate (boşanma kararı). This route asks for more documents than most.
Skilled Worker Visa
Turkish professionals on this route usually need their university diploma (lisans belgesi) and academic transcript (transkript) translated. If the job calls for a specific professional certificate, translate that too. Turkish engineering, medical, and legal qualifications often need both a translation and formal recognition.
Student Visa
Turkish students need their secondary school diploma (lise diploması) or university transcript translated. You also need translated bank statements from your Turkish bank (banka ekstresi) to show you have enough money. Documents from Turkish universities may need ENIC recognition as well as a translation.
Settlement (ILR) & Citizenship
If you apply for indefinite leave to remain or British citizenship, you need a translated Sabıka Kaydı (criminal record certificate) when you have spent 12 months or more in Turkey in the past 10 years. You usually need a current Nüfus Kayıt Örneği too, to confirm your identity and civil status. The Life in the UK Test certificate does not need translating.
