Turkish Divorce Certificate Translation for UK Visa
Applying for a UK spouse visa after a Turkish divorce? This guide covers the Turkish divorce documents, the Aile Mahkemesi (Family Court) system, how to get certified copies, apostille rules, and UKVI-accepted translations.
In Turkey, every divorce goes through the courts — the Aile Mahkemesi (Family Court). Some countries let couples divorce through an office when both agree. Turkey does not. A court judgment is always needed. So Turkish divorce papers are always court papers, and the documents you translate for a UK visa reflect that.
UKVI Requirement: Evidence of Divorced Status
UKVI needs certified English translations of every Turkish divorce document you send with a spouse visa, partner visa, or settlement application. The translation must cover all the text on the page — court name, the parties' details, judgment date, the ruling itself, and any official stamps or seals. You cannot translate your own documents.
Turkish Divorce Documents You May Need to Translate
Boşanma Kararı (Court Divorce Judgment)
This is the main document that proves a divorce in Turkey. The Aile Mahkemesi (Family Court) issues it when it grants the divorce. For anlaşmalı boşanma (consent divorce), it follows one court hearing. For contested (çekişmeli) divorces, the process takes longer. The judgment gives the date of the divorce, the legal grounds, and the terms for children and property. Once it is final, it must be registered with the Nüfus Müdürlüğü (civil registry).
Nüfus Cüzdanı Showing Divorced (Boşanmış) Status
The Turkish national identity card (nüfus cüzdanı) shows marital status. Once a divorce is registered, the civil registry updates the record to say "boşanmış" (divorced). UKVI does not usually accept an ID card on its own as proof of divorce. But a translated nüfus cüzdanı showing divorced status backs up the court judgment.
Aile Kütüğü Extract (Family Register Extract) with Divorce Annotation
The Turkish aile kütüğü is a family register kept by the civil registry (Nüfus Müdürlüğü). When a divorce is registered, a note about it is added to the family entry. An extract showing that note is useful extra proof of divorced status. This extract is called a nüfus kayıt örneği. You get it from the civil registry office (Nüfus Müdürlüğü).
Anlaşmalı Boşanma vs Çekişmeli Boşanma
Turkish divorce law has two main routes. Knowing which one applies to you tells you which documents you hold:
Anlaşmalı Boşanma (Consent Divorce)
- • Both spouses agree on all terms
- • Available for marriages of at least one year
- • Single court hearing in Aile Mahkemesi
- • Settlement agreement (protokol) signed by both parties
- • Faster process — often resolved in weeks
- • Court judgment is the key document
Çekişmeli Boşanma (Contested Divorce)
- • Spouses cannot agree on terms
- • Based on grounds in Turkish Civil Code (Medeni Kanun)
- • Multiple court hearings may be required
- • Can involve child custody and property disputes
- • Produces a more detailed court judgment
- • Entire judgment must be translated for UKVI
Obtaining Certified Copies from Nüfus Müdürlüğü
You get Turkish civil registry documents, including family register extracts, from the Nüfus Müdürlüğü (Directorate of Civil Registration). If you are in the UK, you can request them through:
- The Turkish Embassy or Consulate in the UK, which handles civil registration services
- The e-Devlet (government portal) — Turkish nationals with a Turkish ID number can access some civil registry documents online
- A trusted contact or lawyer in Turkey who can collect the documents from the local Nüfus Müdürlüğü or court
Turkey and the Apostille Convention
Turkey is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. Turkish court and civil registry documents can be apostilled for use abroad. For court judgments, the court or the relevant judicial authority attaches the apostille. For civil registry documents, the civil registration authority does it.
Is an Apostille Required for UK Visa Applications?
UKVI does not normally ask for an apostille on Turkish documents. A certified translation of the original is usually enough. But if UKVI doubts that a document is genuine, an apostilled copy is the strongest proof. Getting an apostille on your divorce judgment before you apply is a sensible precaution.
Surname Reversion After Divorce
Under Turkish law, a woman who took her husband's surname when she married may go back to her maiden name after divorce. The civil registry records this change, and it appears on any new nüfus cüzdanı issued after the divorce. If your divorce documents show a different surname from your current passport, the translation should say so clearly. That helps UKVI follow the name change.
| Document | Issued By | UKVI Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Boşanma kararı | Aile Mahkemesi (Family Court) | Primary proof of court-ordered divorce |
| Aile kütüğü extract | Nüfus Müdürlüğü (civil registry) | Confirms divorce annotation in family register |
| Nüfus cüzdanı (divorced status) | Nüfus Müdürlüğü | Corroborating evidence of current marital status |
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a translation of the full court judgment or just the first page?
UKVI needs the whole document translated. For a Turkish boşanma kararı, that means the court header, the parties' details, the grounds for divorce, the ruling that grants the divorce, any extra terms (custody, money), and the date the judgment became final. Translating only the first or last page is not enough.
My Turkish divorce was "anlaşmalı" (consent) — is the process different?
For anlaşmalı boşanma, your document is still a court judgment from the Aile Mahkemesi. Turkey needs a court even when both people agree. The judgment may be shorter than a contested one, and the settlement protocol (protokol) may be attached to it. Your translation should cover both the judgment and any attached protocol.
