Sri Lankan Birth Certificate Translation for UK Visa
Sri Lanka's Registrar General's Department issues birth certificates in Sinhala, Tamil or English. The language depends on the district and on the parents' language community. Knowing which language your certificate uses — and what a certified translation involves for each — is key to a successful UK visa application.
Sri Lanka has a large, long-established community in the UK, with both Sinhalese and Tamil families well represented. Sri Lankan nationals apply for spouse visas, student visas, Skilled Worker visas and family settlement. All of these routes often need a certified translation of a Sri Lankan birth certificate.
Three Language Options for Sri Lankan Birth Certificates
Sri Lanka has three official languages: Sinhala, Tamil, and English. A birth certificate can be issued in any of them. Many Sri Lankans hold an English certificate, and that needs no translation. A certificate in Sinhala or Tamil script does need a certified translation for a UK visa.
Sri Lankan Birth Certificate Formats
Computerised Certificate (Green/Blue document)
Introduced in the 2000s. A standard printed form from the Registrar General's Department. It comes in Sinhala, Tamil or English. This is the usual format for younger applicants. It has security features, including a government seal.
Older Handwritten Certificate
Older certificates are handwritten or typed in Sinhala or Tamil. The layout varied by district and by registrar. They are still valid, and UKVI accepts them if they come with a certified translation. Older applicants often have this type.
English-Language Certificate
Many Sri Lankans have an English birth certificate, especially people from cities or whose parents worked for the government. If yours is entirely in English, you need no translation — just send it in with your visa application.
Bilingual Certificate
Some certificates have the main text in Sinhala or Tamil with English field labels, or the other way round. If your personal details are in Sinhala or Tamil, those parts still need a certified translation.
Sinhala and Tamil Scripts
Both Sinhala and Tamil use distinct scripts that require specialist translators:
- Sinhala script: used by the Sinhalese majority. It is an abugida (alphasyllabary), and it grew out of the Brahmi script through older Sri Lankan scripts. It has about 60 letters. Sinhala is used only in Sri Lanka — no other country writes with it.
- Tamil script: used by the Sri Lankan Tamil minority. Tamil is also spoken in India, Malaysia and Singapore. The script is the same in every Tamil-speaking community, though the words used can differ.
British-Era vs Post-Independence Name Conventions
Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) was under British rule until 1948. Older certificates from the colonial period may be entirely in English, but they follow different name conventions from modern documents. Traditional Sri Lankan names also put the father's name first, before the person's own name. The two are split by a comma, or by "s/o" or "d/o" (son of, daughter of). UK systems expect a first name and a surname, so this can cause confusion. Your translator will explain the convention.

Frequently Asked Questions
My birth certificate has Sinhala text but English field labels. Does it need translation?
Yes. If your details are in Sinhala script — your name, your parents' names, your date of birth and place of birth — you need a certified translation, even when the field labels are in English. UKVI needs to read the content, not just the layout of the form.
I have both a Sinhala and an English version of my birth certificate. Which should I submit?
Send both. UKVI can read the English certificate straight away, and it supports your case. The Sinhala certificate, with its certified translation, is the main authenticated record. Sending both makes it less likely that anyone questions whether the certificate is genuine.
