Sri Lanka records civil documents in Sinhala, Tamil, and sometimes English. So many documents already show some English. But UKVI still needs a full certified English translation when the original is not only in English. This guide covers every document type Sri Lankan applicants usually send with a UK visa application.

Common UK Visa Routes for Sri Lankan Applicants

Student Visa

GCE O-Level, A-Level, and bachelor's certificates from Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, Moratuwa, or SLIIT universities.

Skilled Worker / Healthcare

Sri Lankan nurses, doctors, and IT staff need registration certificates and experience letters.

Spouse / Partner Visa

Marriage certificates come under the general, Kandyan, or Muslim marriage ordinances. Each format looks different.

Family Reunion / Asylum

Family reunion cases after the civil war often need the NIC, grama niladhari letters, and school certificates translated.

Sinhala vs Tamil: Script and Community

Sri Lankan documents come in Sinhala, Tamil, or both. It depends on the district and the applicant. Key points:

  • A translator who works in Sinhala may not work in Tamil. The two scripts are completely different
  • Sri Lankan Tamil is a little different from Indian Tamil in form and wording. Use a translator who knows Sri Lankan usage
  • Documents from northern and eastern Sri Lanka after 2009 often still use Tamil forms. Always say which script you have when you order

UKVI Compliance Notes

Partial English Not Enough

Many Sri Lankan birth certificates print the header and the main fields in English. But the handwritten entries are in Sinhala or Tamil. UKVI still needs a full certified translation of that handwritten text.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Sri Lanka use apostille?

Sri Lanka is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so Sri Lankan documents need consular legalisation rather than an apostille. The Foreign Ministry or the named apostille office issues the apostille. You still need a certified translation on top of the apostille for any non-English content.

My NIC is the old green card — is it still valid?

Old-format NICs are still valid as ID. But use the new smart NIC if you have one. We can translate both. The smart NIC has English fields, but the back content is in Sinhala or Tamil.

Are Kandyan and Muslim marriages recognised by UKVI?

Yes, as long as the marriage was legally registered under Sri Lankan law. The certificate must come from the authorised registrar. The translation should clearly name the marriage ordinance used.

How long does Sri Lankan document translation take?

Most documents take 24–48 hours. Multi-document packs, which are common for spouse and student applications, get bulk discounts.
