Malaysian Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026
Most Malaysian civil documents are in Bahasa Malaysia, though newer ones include some English. Malaysia treats two kinds of marriage differently: civil marriages (registered with the National Registration Department — JPN) and Muslim marriages (registered with the Syariah courts). This guide explains the key documents, the translation rules, and what that split means for UKVI applications.
JPN (Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara — National Registration Department) runs civil registration in Malaysia. It issues birth certificates, national identity cards and civil marriage certificates. Muslim personal status matters — including Muslim marriages and divorces — go to the Jabatan Agama Islam (Islamic Religious Affairs Department) and the Syariah courts. Malaysia is not yet a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so Malaysian documents cannot be apostilled.
Race and Religion on Malaysian Documents
Malaysian identity cards and civil documents show the holder's race (Melayu, Cina, India, etc.) and religion (Islam, Kristian, Buddha, etc.). These entries are in Bahasa Malaysia. They must be translated exactly and kept in the certified translation. In Malaysia these fields carry legal weight, and they can decide which legal system covers your marriage or divorce.
Key Malaysian Documents for UK Visa Translation
Sijil Kelahiran (Birth Certificate)
JPN issues Malaysian birth certificates (Sijil Kelahiran). Some fields are bilingual, but the main text is in Bahasa Malaysia. The certificate shows the child's full name, date and place of birth, identity card number, and the parents' details, including race and religion. For UKVI it needs a certified Bahasa Malaysia-to-English translation.
Sijil Perkahwinan (Civil Marriage Certificate)
Non-Muslims register a civil marriage with JPN, which then issues a Sijil Perkahwinan. It is in Bahasa Malaysia and shows both spouses' names, IC numbers, the date and place of the marriage, and the witnesses. For a UKVI spouse visa it needs certified translation.
MyKad (National Identity Card)
The MyKad is a smart-card identity document issued by JPN. It shows the holder's name, IC number, date of birth, address and other details, all in Bahasa Malaysia. UKVI needs a certified translation so every part is confirmed, including the IC number format.
Muslim Marriage — Syariah Court
Muslim marriages in Malaysia take place and are registered under the Islamic Family Law (Federal Territories) Act, or the state version of it. The Jabatan Agama Islam runs the process. The marriage certificate (Sijil Perkahwinan under Islamic law) is in Bahasa Malaysia and needs certified translation for UKVI.
JPN as Issuing Authority
JPN issues every civil registration document in Malaysia, through its state offices. It also runs the national IC numbering system (IC number in XXXXXX-XX-XXXX format). The translator should always carry the full IC number across, because Malaysian government records use it to check identity.
Malaysia and the Apostille Convention
Malaysia has not yet joined the Hague Apostille Convention, though accession is in progress. Until it takes effect, documents go through MOFA (Wisma Putra) legalisation and consular attestation rather than an apostille. You can get an apostille through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Even with an apostille, a Malaysian document still needs its own certified English translation for UKVI.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Malaysian birth certificate has some English text on it. Does it still need to be translated?
Yes. Newer Malaysian birth certificates carry some English labels, but the content is in Bahasa Malaysia. That includes the names (which may be in Malay, Chinese or Tamil script), the dates, race, religion and registry details. A certified translation covers the whole document and confirms every part for UKVI, so nothing is left unclear.
I was married in Malaysia under Islamic law through the Syariah court. Does UKVI recognise this marriage for a UK spouse visa?
Yes. UKVI recognises Muslim marriages carried out in Malaysia under the Islamic Family Law system, as long as the state's Islamic Religious Affairs Department registered the marriage. Send the Syariah court marriage certificate with a certified Bahasa Malaysia-to-English translation.
