Lithuanian Document Translation for UK Visa Applications

Complete guide to getting your Lithuanian civil registry documents translated and certified for UKVI applications in 2026. Covers birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, and more.

Do You Need to Translate Your Lithuanian Documents?

If you're applying for a UK visa and hold Lithuanian civil registry documents, you will need a certified English translation that UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) accepts. Lithuania is an EU member state and uses standard civil registry formats. But the Lithuanian language brings problems of its own, so you need a translator who knows it well.

Whether you send a gimimo liudijimas (birth certificate), santuokos liudijimas (marriage certificate), ištuokos liudijimas (divorce certificate), or a mirties liudijimas (death certificate), a qualified translator must translate the whole document into English. The Home Office will not look at it otherwise.

UKVI Requirement for Lithuanian Documents

The UK Home Office says every document not in English or Welsh must come with a certified translation. This covers all Lithuanian-language documents, whether you got them before or after Lithuania joined the EU. Since Brexit, EU multilingual standard forms (Form L or equivalent) do not replace a full certified translation.

Why Lithuanian Is a Linguistically Demanding Translation

Lithuanian is one of the oldest living Indo-European languages. It has kept old grammar features — including seven grammatical cases — that most other European languages have lost. This matters for document translation:

Grammatical Case Endings on Names

Lithuanian changes the ending of a name to fit the grammar. The name "Jonas" becomes "Jono" in the genitive, "Jonui" in the dative, and so on. The translator must work out the base (nominative) form so the name matches your passport and other ID.

Gendered Surname Suffixes

Lithuanian surnames change with gender. A man named "Kazlauskas" has a wife "Kazlauskienė" and a daughter "Kazlauskaitė". The translator must get these right and explain the family link they show. That often matters a lot in family visa applications.

Diacritical Marks

Lithuanian uses letters with marks: ą, č, ę, ė, į, š, ų, ū, ž. They change how a word sounds, and sometimes what it means. For UKVI, the translation must keep them exactly or follow an accepted romanisation standard.

Soviet-Era Documents

Documents issued before 1990 may be in Russian (Cyrillic) or use Soviet office wording. Papers from the early 1990s may mix Lithuanian and Russian text. Both need a specialist translator.

Lithuanian Civil Registry Documents

Lithuanian civil registry (Metrikacijos skyrius / Civilinės metrikacijos skyrius) documents come from the Civil Registry Department under the Ministry of Justice. Since independence and EU entry, Lithuania has slowly updated its document formats. Here is what you are most likely to see:

Gimimo Liudijimas (Birth Certificate)

The standard Lithuanian birth certificate. The modern one is A4. Since EU entry the header is in both Lithuanian and English, but the main text is still Lithuanian. It shows the child's full name, date and place of birth, the parents' names, and registration details.

Santuokos Liudijimas (Marriage Certificate)

The Civil Registry Office issues this at the time of the marriage. It shows both spouses' names (in the nominative case), the date and place of the marriage, who conducted it, and the witnesses.

Ištuokos Liudijimas (Divorce Certificate)

You get this once the civil registry records a court divorce. You need it for a UK spouse visa if you or your sponsor were married before. It gives the court judgment reference.

Mirties Liudijimas (Death Certificate)

You need a death certificate for some settlement and nationality applications when a former partner has died. It shows who died, the date and cause of death, and the registration details.

Gyvenamosios Vietos Pažyma (Residence Certificate)

A proof of address certificate from your local municipality. It is sometimes asked for as extra evidence, mainly for ILR and citizenship.

Teistumo Pažymėjimas (Criminal Record Certificate)

The police clearance certificate from the Information Technology and Communications Department (ITCD), under the Ministry of the Interior. You need it for ILR and settlement applications.

EU Apostille for Lithuanian Documents

Lithuania has signed the Hague Convention of 1961. So Lithuanian public documents can be apostilled for use abroad. For UK visa applications, the rules are a little more subtle:

Do you need an apostille for a UK visa?

Usually, no. For most visa types, UK Visas and Immigration does not ask for an apostille on foreign civil registry documents. What you do need is a certified translation. If your document already has an apostille attached, your translator must translate the apostille text as well as the main document.

How to obtain a Lithuanian apostille

In Lithuania, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vilnius issues apostilles, and so do Lithuanian consulates. The apostille confirms that the signature on the document is genuine. It usually takes 1–5 working days.

Post-Brexit and multilingual forms

Under EU Regulation 2016/1191, Lithuania issues multilingual standard forms with civil registry documents. But since the UK left the EU, these forms have no legal weight for UK visas. They do not replace a certified translation.

Country-Specific Variations: Lithuanian Documents From Multiple Sources

Not all Lithuanian-language documents come from Lithuania. Large Lithuanian communities in the UK (mainly in London, Birmingham and Nottingham) may hold papers from several sources:

Modern Lithuanian Documents (post-2004)

Since Lithuania joined the EU in 2004, its documents have become more standard. Modern certificates are printed on security paper with holograms, carry the state emblem, and have a barcode for checking. They are easy to translate.

Early Post-Soviet Documents (1990–2003)

Papers from the 1990s may use old office wording carried over from Soviet days, now written in Lithuanian. Place names may appear in their Soviet-era form, not the restored Lithuanian name.

Soviet-Era Documents (pre-1990)

Documents issued before Lithuanian independence in 1990 are usually in Russian and carry the Soviet emblem. Place names, administrative units (SSRS = Soviet Socialist Republic) and institution names all need a specialist translator, plus a short note to explain them.

Documents from the Lithuanian Diaspora

Ethnic Lithuanians born in Poland, Germany or the US may hold Lithuanian-language papers that Lithuanian authorities did not issue. These need careful translation, with a note on who issued them and under which country's law.

Common Questions About Lithuanian Document Translation

Why do Lithuanian surnames look different from my passport?

Lithuanian surnames change their endings to fit the grammar of a sentence. So your birth certificate may show your name in a different case from your passport. A qualified translator finds the base form and adds a note about the difference if needed. UKVI caseworkers see this often.

My birth certificate is in Russian (Soviet-era). Can you translate it?

Yes. Many Lithuanian nationals hold Soviet-era papers in Russian, mostly those born before 1990. Our translators work with both Lithuanian and Russian documents from the Baltic states, including the Soviet office wording used in these records.

Does my Lithuanian document need an apostille for a UK visa?

For most UK visa types, you do not need an apostille on Lithuanian documents. A certified translation is enough. If you already have an apostille for another purpose, we translate it too at no extra charge.

Can I use the EU multilingual standard form instead?

No. Since Brexit, the UK no longer accepts EU multilingual forms in place of a certified translation. You need a full certified English translation, even if a multilingual form is attached to your document.

How do I get a replacement Lithuanian document if I've lost mine?

You can ask for replacement civil registry documents from the Civil Registry Department in Lithuania, or from the Lithuanian Embassy in London. Requests from abroad usually take 2–4 weeks. If you live in Lithuania, the E-Valdžia portal gives you electronic copies faster.

What if my Lithuanian document is damaged or illegible?

Upload the clearest scan you can get. Our translators mark any part they cannot read. If parts are missing, get a replacement document from Lithuania before you apply, because UKVI may reject an incomplete translation.
