Landlord Reference & Accommodation Evidence Translation for UK Visa
You may need to prove where a visa applicant will stay in the UK, or where an overseas sponsor lives. If those housing documents are not in English, they need a certified translation. Here is what UKVI expects.
Many UK visa types ask for proof of accommodation. You may be a visitor staying with a friend, a spouse joining a partner in the UK, or an overseas sponsor vouching for a family member’s housing. In every case, the documents that show where the applicant will live must be in English. Some of those documents come from a property abroad. That could be a foreign landlord reference, a foreign tenancy agreement, or overseas title deeds. UKVI cannot assess them until they have a certified translation.
When Does Accommodation Evidence Need Translation?
Not all accommodation evidence is in a foreign language. But you do need translation when: (1) an overseas sponsor supplies property documents in another language; (2) an overseas landlord writes a reference about the applicant’s renting history abroad; or (3) the sponsor uses property owned abroad to show they have enough money. The rule is simple: any document you send to UKVI that is not in English needs a certified translation.
Documents That May Require Translation
Tenancy Agreement
This is a lease from the sponsor’s home country, in another language. It shows they have the right to live at a set address. It must give the address, the tenant name, the landlord name, and the length of the lease.
Property Ownership Documents
These are title deeds, land registry certificates, or property tax records. They show the sponsor owns the home where the applicant will live. The legal wording is often hard, so they need a specialist translator.
Overseas Landlord Reference Letter
This is a reference from a landlord abroad about where the applicant has lived. Settlement applications sometimes ask for it, as proof of good character or a settled life.
Host Declaration / Sponsor Statement
This is a letter in which a sponsor, in the UK or abroad, promises to house the visitor or dependant. If the sponsor writes it in their own language, it must be translated.
Visitor Visas with Overseas Hosts
For a Standard Visitor visa, UKVI needs proof of where you will stay in the UK. If your host already lives in the UK, this is easy: a council tax bill or a tenancy agreement in English will do. But sometimes your own property abroad matters too. It shows your ties to your home country — that is, a good reason to go back after the visit.
If you use overseas property evidence in this way, send a certified English translation with it. That applies, for example, to an ownership certificate in Arabic or a tenancy agreement in Mandarin.
Overseas Sponsors and Accommodation Evidence
On family and dependant visa applications, the sponsor sometimes lives abroad. They might be a British citizen overseas who wants to bring a family member to the UK. Or the housing might come from a relative who has not moved to the UK yet. Then the accommodation documents come from abroad, and they are probably not in English.
| Scenario | Document Needed | Translation Required? |
|---|---|---|
| UK sponsor with UK property | UK tenancy agreement or mortgage statement | No (already in English) |
| Overseas sponsor with foreign property | Foreign title deeds or tenancy agreement | Yes — certified translation required |
| Visitor staying with overseas friend in UK | UK host’s accommodation proof | No if in English; yes if in a foreign language |
| Applicant showing home country ties via property | Overseas property ownership certificate | Yes — certified translation recommended |
Sponsor Undertaking Forms
A sponsor undertaking is a formal promise, sometimes made on an official UKVI form. In it, a UK-based sponsor agrees to feed and house the applicant during the visit. The form is in English, so it needs no translation. But any documents the sponsor attaches do need a certified translation if they are in another language — a property lease, for example.

Frequently Asked Questions
My sponsor in Morocco owns a property there and wants to show it as evidence of accommodation. What needs to be translated?
Get the title deed (acte de propriété), or the extract from the land registry (conservation foncière), certified-translated from Arabic or French into English. Send the translation with the original. If the sponsor will house the applicant in the UK rather than in Morocco, UKVI cares more about UK-based evidence.
Does a foreign landlord reference letter help with a UK visa application?
It can help as extra evidence of a settled life and a clear housing history. That matters most on visitor visas, where you need to show ties to your home country. If you send one, get it certified-translated from the original language. UKVI does not ask for it as standard, but it can make your bundle stronger.
