Italian Birth Certificate Translation for UK Visa

Italian nationals in the UK need a certified translation of their atto di nascita for EUSS late applications, spouse visas, and ILR. Italy issues several types of extract. Picking the right one for UKVI matters.

Italians are one of the largest EU communities in the UK. Many already have EUSS status. But they still need to bring family members over, apply for late EUSS, or prove their status for ILR. All of these can need certified translations of Italian civil registry documents. Italy's stato civile (civil status) system is well run. It just issues several different document types, and that causes confusion.

AIRE Registration and Italian Birth Certificates

Italians who live abroad are on the AIRE register (Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all'Estero — Registry of Italians Residing Abroad). If you are on AIRE, you can ask for civil status documents, including your birth certificate, from an Italian consulate in the UK. You can also apply online through the sportello unico consolare service. You do not need to travel to Italy.

Italian Birth Certificate Types

The stato civile office at your Comune (local council) issues several types of birth certificate extract. For a UK visa, the main choice is between the estratto per riassunto and the copia integrale:

TypeItalian NameContentUK Visa Use
Summary ExtractEstratto per riassuntoName, DOB, parents' names, place of birthRecommended — most complete summary
Full CopyCopia integraleComplete verbatim registry entryUse if name changes/annotations exist
International FormEstratto plurilingueMultilingual CIEC convention formMay include English — check requirements
CertificateCertificato di nascitaBasic details onlyNot recommended for visa use

For UK visa applications, ask for the estratto per riassunto. Does your birth certificate record a name change, an earlier marriage, or another civil status event? Then ask for the copia integrale instead. That way every note on the record appears in the translation.

Italian Surname Reform (2022)

Until 2022, Italian children took the father's surname automatically. A Constitutional Court ruling in 2022 changed that. Parents can now choose either parent's surname, or both. This affects children born after that date. So newer Italian birth certificates may show both parents' surnames.

Double Surnames from 2022 Onwards

Children born after the 2022 ruling may carry a double surname from both parents. Your other documents may show the name a different way. If so, your certified translator should add a note about it. Many UKVI caseworkers do not know about this change in Italian naming law yet.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Italian birth certificate is very old and handwritten in formal Italian. Can it still be translated?

Yes. In most areas, Italian civil registry records go back to 1865. Old handwritten records use formal 19th-century Italian, which is not the same as modern Italian. Our translators work with these historical registry documents often. If your original is very old, you could also ask the Comune for a modern certified copy. They copy the old record into a printed modern format.

I have an estratto plurilingue with an English section. Does UKVI accept this without a separate certified translation?

The estratto plurilingue is an official document issued under the CIEC convention. Its fields are the same in every language. Some UKVI caseworkers accept it for simple applications. Others still want a full certified translation. The safe route is to get a certified translation of the full estratto per riassunto and send it with the multilingual form.

I was born in Italy but my parents were not Italian citizens. My birth certificate shows their foreign names. How is this handled?

Italian birth certificates show the parents' names exactly as they were registered, whatever their nationality. Foreign names are copied as they appear. Your translator will keep them exactly as shown, including any special characters from the parents' language. If the Italian spelling does not match your other documents, a footnote in the translation can explain why.
