Foreign Pension Documents Translation for UK Visa

Several UK visa routes accept foreign pension income as financial evidence. These include the UK Spouse visa and the Adult Dependant Relative visa. (Note: the UK no longer has a retirement visa — the Retired Person of Independent Means route closed to new applicants in 2008.) If your pension documents are not in English, you need a certified translation before UKVI can assess them.

UK visa rules treat pension income differently from wages. Pensions are usually steadier and easier to predict, and UKVI accepts them as a genuine long-term income. The evidence rules, though, are the same. Your pension documents must be in English or come with a certified translation. They must also show how much the pension pays and that it keeps paying.

Pension Income in UK Visa Applications

Foreign pension income counts towards the financial requirement for UK spouse and family visas under Appendix FM. You can add pension income to other income to reach the minimum income threshold, currently £29,000. The pension must be an ongoing entitlement, not a one-off lump sum. Your evidence must show the yearly pension amount, who pays it, and that the payments continue. Every document in another language needs a certified translation.

Types of Pension Documents for Translation

State Pension Award Letter

This is the letter from the government social security office. It confirms how much the pension pays and how often. It is the main proof of state pension entitlement. Each country uses its own format. What matters is the amount, how often it is paid, and who receives it.

Annual Pension Statement

The yearly statement from your pension provider. It shows the value of the pension account, the contributions, and the payments you get now or expect later. For a defined benefit pension, it confirms the yearly pension in payment. It needs a certified translation.

Occupational Pension Certificate

A formal letter from your old employer or their pension administrator. It confirms the pension in payment, the monthly or yearly amount, and that the payments will go on. It works like a UK employer pension payslip and an award letter in one. It needs a certified translation.

Private Pension Policy Statement

For a private annuity or drawdown product, this is the policy statement or annuity schedule. It shows the income you are guaranteed. If the policy comes from a foreign insurer and is not in English, you need a certified translation so UKVI can check the amount and the terms.

Pension Bank Statements

Bank statements that show the pension arriving on a regular basis. Many bank statements are partly in English. But statements from an overseas bank in the local language need a certified translation. UKVI must see where the money comes from and how often.

Government Entitlement Certificate

In some countries the national social insurance body proves your pension with a certificate. Examples are INPS in Italy and Deutsche Rentenversicherung in Germany. These formal certificates need a certified translation.

What UKVI Looks For in Pension Evidence

A UKVI caseworker who checks pension income needs to see:

  • The yearly gross pension amount, in the original currency. Do not convert it in the document
  • Proof that the payments continue and do not stop on a set date
  • Who receives the pension
  • The name of the institution that pays it
  • Bank statements showing the pension arriving, usually 6 months' worth

UKVI converts the amounts into pounds itself. It uses the spot rate on the date you apply. The certified translation should keep the amounts in the original currency.

Frequently Asked Questions

My pension is paid in euros. How will UKVI convert it to pounds for the financial threshold?

UKVI converts foreign income with the spot rate from the OANDA currency converter on the date you apply. You do not need to do the sums yourself. Give the amounts in the original currency. Your covering letter can add the rough GBP figure to help the reader. UKVI will still do its own conversion.

I receive both a foreign state pension and a small private pension. Can I combine them to meet the financial threshold?

Yes. You can add income sources together for the Appendix FM financial requirement. A foreign state pension, a private pension, and other income can all count. Each source needs its own evidence. And each document that is not in English needs its own certified translation.
