Dentist GDC Registration Translation Guide UK: 2026 Overseas Applicant Resource
Translate your BDS / DDS / DMD dental degree, academic transcript, and Good Standing letter for the General Dental Council (GDC) registration process — including ORE (Overseas Registration Examination) applications.
The General Dental Council (GDC) regulates dentistry in the UK. If you qualified as a dentist overseas, you will almost always register through the ORE (Overseas Registration Examination). The ORE is a two-part assessment. At the eligibility stage you must send a detailed pack of translated academic and professional documents.
Understanding the ORE Route
The ORE has two parts: Part 1 (a written knowledge test) and Part 2 (a clinical assessment). Before you sit either part, GDC needs an eligibility application with supporting documents. The translation rules are strictest at this stage.
Who Is Eligible for ORE?
You can apply if you hold a primary dental qualification from a non-UK university that the GDC recognises. EEA qualifications follow a separate assessment route, but the translation rules are similar.
Documents Requiring Translation
| Document | Stage | Typical Pages |
|---|---|---|
| BDS / DDS / DMD Degree Certificate | Eligibility | 1 |
| Full Dental School Transcript | Eligibility | 4–12 |
| Course Content / Syllabus | Sometimes requested | 5–25 |
| Registration / Licensure Certificate | Eligibility | 1–2 |
| Certificate of Good Standing | Eligibility | 1–2 |
| Passport / ID | All stages | 1 |
| Specialist / Postgraduate Certificates | If claimed | 1–3 each |
Certificate of Good Standing Requirements
GDC needs a Certificate of Good Standing from every dental regulator you've been registered with in the past 5 years. Here is what it must meet:
- Issued within the last 3 months of submission
- Sent directly from the regulator to GDC (or to you in a sealed envelope)
- Confirming no current fitness-to-practise concerns
- Sent with a certified English translation if it is not in English

Avoid This Common Delay
One delay comes up again and again: people translate the degree certificate but not the transcript. GDC needs the transcript for its academic assessment. It must be complete and match the degree you were awarded.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can EEA-qualified dentists avoid ORE?
Since Brexit, EEA qualifications are no longer recognised automatically. Most EEA dentists now follow a route much like the ORE. Some older cases are still covered by transitional rules, so check GDC's current guidance.
Does GDC accept the same translation I use for UKVI?
Yes, as long as it follows the standard certified translation format. Our translations meet both UKVI and GDC requirements at the same time.
How long does the ORE route take?
From the first application to full registration can take 18–30 months. It depends on when ORE exam places are free. We can turn translations around in 24–72 hours, depending on how many documents you have.
What if my dental school has since closed?
Get your documents from the Ministry of Education or from the institution that took over. Where needed, a translator's note can explain the change of institution.
