NMC Registration: Translation Requirements for International Nurses

A complete guide to the certified translations you need for Nursing and Midwifery Council registration in the UK — from nursing degrees and transcripts to good standing certificates and Health and Care Worker visa paperwork.

Overview: NMC Registration for International Nurses

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the regulator for nurses and midwives in the UK. If you trained abroad and want to work in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, you must register with the NMC first. This is separate from your visa application. NMC registration shows you meet UK professional standards. A Health and Care Worker visa lets you enter and work in the UK legally.

If your qualifications and supporting papers are not in English, you will need certified translations at several stages. The NMC only accepts documents in English, and so does UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). Getting the translations right first time can save you weeks of delay and the cost of sending everything again.

Important: Two Separate Processes

The NMC and UKVI are different bodies, and they ask for slightly different documents. You will often need the same certified translations for both, but you send them separately. First to the NMC for professional assessment, then to UKVI with your visa application. Plan ahead so your translations are ready for both stages.

The NMC Test of Competence Pathway

Most international nurses register with the NMC through the Test of Competence (ToC) route. This is the normal route if you trained outside the UK and hold a matching nursing qualification. It has two parts:

Part 1: Computer-Based Test (CBT)

A multiple-choice exam on your nursing knowledge. You must pass it before you can move on to Part 2. You can sit it at Pearson VUE test centres worldwide, including in your home country before you travel.

Part 2: OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination)

A practical clinical exam at an approved UK test centre. It checks your clinical skills, communication and professional values in a mock patient care setting. You must be in the UK to sit it.

Before you can sit either part, you must send the NMC your application with all the documents they ask for. That includes certified translations of anything not originally in English. The NMC then checks your qualifications. If they meet the standard, you get a decision letter saying you can take the ToC.

Documents Requiring Certified Translation for NMC Registration

You must send these documents to the NMC in English. If any of them were issued in another language, you need a certified translation:

1. Nursing Degree or Diploma Certificate

Your main nursing qualification — a BSc Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing or similar. The NMC needs to check that your course meets their minimum standards for pre-registration nursing education. That covers both length (usually at least three years) and what you studied.

2. Academic Transcripts

Your full transcript, showing every subject, your clinical placement hours and your grades. The NMC uses it to check that your training covered the right areas: adult nursing, mental health, learning disabilities or children's nursing. Transcripts must be translated in full. Part translations and summaries are not accepted.

3. Registration Certificate from Your Home Country

Proof that you are, or were, registered as a nurse in the country where you trained. It shows that your home regulator treats you as a qualified nurse. Examples are PRC licences (Philippines), INC registration (India) and NMCN certificates (Nigeria).

4. Certificate of Good Standing

A letter from your home nursing regulator saying your registration is in good standing, with no open disciplinary cases and no limits on your practice. It does not last long — usually three to six months from the date it was issued.

5. Identity Documents

Your passport, national ID card or birth certificate, if any part of them is not in English. Most passports show English next to the local language, but some countries issue ID documents in the national language only.

NMC Translation Requirements vs UKVI Requirements

Both the NMC and UKVI want certified translations. But they use and check them in different ways:

NMC Requirements

  • Focuses on content accuracy — they read your transcript closely to check your training hours and subjects match UK standards
  • Wants complete, word-for-word translations — no summaries, nothing left out
  • Accepts translations from any professional translation service
  • Medical and nursing terms must be translated correctly, using the UK equivalent

UKVI Requirements

  • Requires a certification statement confirming the translation is accurate and complete
  • Translator's name, contact details, and signature must appear on the translation
  • A statement that the translator is competent in both languages
  • The date of translation must be included

Good News: One Translation Serves Both

A certified translation that meets UKVI standards is also accepted by the NMC. Every translation from CertifiedVisaTranslation.com comes with a full certification statement: translator details, date and an accuracy declaration. That meets both the NMC and UKVI in one document, so you do not need to order two sets.

Country-Specific Nursing Qualifications

What you need translated depends a lot on where you trained. Here are the most common countries for nurses coming to the UK:

Philippines (PRC Licence)

Filipino nurses hold a Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) licence and a board exam rating. Most PRC documents are in English, so they often need no translation. But some university transcripts have sections in Filipino, and Commission on Higher Education (CHED) papers may too. The Filipino birth certificate and other civil documents usually do need translation. Check every page. Even one Filipino page inside an English transcript must be translated.

India (Indian Nursing Council)

Indian nurses register with the Indian Nursing Council (INC) or with their State Nursing Council. Nursing degrees from Indian universities are usually in English. Some state institutions, though, issue transcripts and certificates in Hindi or a regional language such as Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada or Bengali. The INC registration certificate and good standing letter are normally in English, but state council papers may not be. Indian birth and marriage certificates are often in Hindi or the local state language.

Nigeria (Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria)

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) issues nursing qualifications in English, so most Nigerian documents need no translation. Some supporting papers do — above all birth certificates, affidavits and certificates issued at local government level, which may carry Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa text. If any part of a document is not in English, the whole document needs a certified translation.

Pakistan (Pakistan Nursing Council)

Pakistani nurses are regulated by the Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC). Many PNC documents are in both English and Urdu, but some certificates and transcripts are mainly in Urdu. The Nikah Nama (marriage certificate), birth certificates and police clearance certificates from Pakistan almost always need a certified translation from Urdu into English.

Zimbabwe (Nurses Council of Zimbabwe)

The Nurses Council of Zimbabwe (NCZ) normally issues qualifications in English, and civil documents such as birth certificates are usually in English too. So Zimbabwean nurses rarely need a translation. Any document with Shona or Ndebele text on it still needs one.

Health and Care Worker Visa Document Requirements

Once you have your NMC decision letter (or PIN), you can apply for a Health and Care Worker visa. This visa has its own document list, and much of it overlaps with your NMC application. The documents that may need a certified translation are:

  • Passport and travel documents (if not in English)
  • Criminal record certificate or police clearance from your home country
  • Proof of qualifications (nursing degree, transcripts, registration certificates)
  • Bank statements or financial evidence (if required)
  • TB test results certificate (for nationals of listed countries)
  • Marriage certificate (if your spouse is joining you as a dependant)

Your employer gives you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS). It is in English, so it needs no translation. But the documents your employer used to check your qualifications may need translating if UKVI asks to see them.

OSCE Exam Documentation

The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is Part 2 of the NMC Test of Competence. The exam itself is in English and involves no document translation. Some related paperwork may still need it:

  • Clinical practice logbooks — if your employer or training school gave you supervision records in another language, you may need them for your NMC portfolio
  • Continuing professional development (CPD) certificates — courses, workshops or conferences you finished at home can support your OSCE preparation evidence
  • Employment references from overseas — letters confirming your clinical experience, above all your specialist areas, ward types and the patients you have worked with

English Language Requirements

Not a Translation Requirement

The NMC asks international nurses to show their English through IELTS Academic (minimum 7.0 in each component) or OET (minimum Grade B in each component). This is a separate requirement from document translation. Your IELTS or OET certificate does not need translating, because it is already in English. You still need certified translations of your nursing qualifications and supporting documents, whatever your English test scores are.

Employer Sponsorship Documents

To work as a nurse in the UK you need a sponsoring employer, usually an NHS Trust, a private hospital or a care home. Your employer issues the Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) in English. During recruitment, though, they may ask you for translated copies of:

  • Your nursing degree and transcripts (to verify your qualifications before offering a role)
  • Previous employment contracts or reference letters from overseas hospitals
  • Professional indemnity or malpractice history documentation

Having certified translations ready before you start applying can speed up onboarding a lot. Many agencies that place international nurses advise getting everything translated as one of your first steps.

Occupational Health Clearance Documents

Before you start work with an NHS Trust or care provider, you must pass an occupational health check. You may need translated copies of:

  • Vaccination records — proof of Hepatitis B, MMR, TB and the other jabs needed for clinical work
  • Medical fitness certificates — health clearance documents from your home country
  • Blood test results — above all Hepatitis B surface antigen and antibody results, if they are in another language

Occupational health clearance is not part of NMC registration or the visa process. Even so, translating these papers early stops delays between landing in the UK and starting clinical work.

Timeline: From Application to NMC Registration

Knowing the full timeline helps you plan when to order your translations:

1

Get Documents Translated (1–3 days)

Order certified translations of all your nursing qualifications, transcripts, registration certificates, and supporting documents. CertifiedVisaTranslation.com delivers most translations within 24 hours.

2

Submit NMC Application (2–8 weeks for assessment)

Send your application with the translated documents. The NMC checks your qualifications against UK nursing standards. Times vary, but 4–8 weeks is normal.

3

Pass CBT Exam (book within 1–4 weeks)

Once you are approved, book and pass the computer-based test at a Pearson VUE centre. You can do this in your home country.

4

Secure Job Offer and CoS (varies)

Find a sponsoring employer to issue your Certificate of Sponsorship. Many nurses use a recruitment agency for this step.

5

Apply for Health and Care Worker Visa (3–8 weeks)

Send your visa application with your translated documents, NMC decision letter, CoS and supporting evidence. Priority processing is available.

6

Arrive in UK and Pass OSCE (within set timeframe)

Travel to the UK, take your OSCE at an approved test centre and get your NMC PIN. You can then start work as a registered nurse.

Plan for Document Expiry

Good standing certificates and police clearance certificates run out quickly. If your NMC or visa application takes longer than you expect, they may expire. You would then need fresh copies and a new translation. Ask for these documents as close to your submission date as you can, and keep digital copies of every translation so you can send them again fast. See our ENIC/NARIC credential evaluation guide for information on when credential evaluation may also be needed alongside translation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the same certified translation for both NMC registration and my visa application?

Yes. A certified translation that meets UKVI standards is also accepted by the NMC. It must show the translator's name, contact details and signature, plus the date and an accuracy declaration. You do not need to order two sets. Keep digital and paper copies so you can send them to each body at the right time.

My nursing transcript is very long (15–25 pages). Does the entire document need translating?

Yes. The NMC needs your full transcript translated, with nothing left out. They use it to judge whether your course meets UK nursing standards, so they look at the subjects, the clinical placement hours and your results. If you send only part of it, your application comes back to you. We charge long transcripts per page, from £17.99 per page.

Do I need to get my IELTS or OET certificate translated?

No. International testing bodies issue IELTS and OET certificates in English, so they need no translation. The English language rule for NMC registration is separate from the translation rule. You need both: proof of your English (IELTS/OET) and certified translations of anything not originally in English.

How much does it cost to translate all the documents needed for NMC registration?

CertifiedVisaTranslation.com charges from £17.99 per page. A typical NMC package is your nursing degree, full transcript, registration certificate and good standing certificate. That usually comes to 10–30 pages, depending on how long your transcript is. Most international nurses pay between £150 and £450 for the full set. Extra personal documents for the visa, such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate or police certificate, are usually 1–4 pages each.

My good standing certificate is about to expire. Should I wait to get it translated?

Ask for a fresh good standing certificate as close to your NMC submission date as you can, then have it translated straight away. In most countries these certificates last three to six months. If yours expires before the NMC or UKVI deals with your application, you will need a new one and a new translation. Some countries take 4–8 weeks to issue the letter, so plan carefully. Our 24-hour turnaround means the translation is never the hold-up.
