Chinese Marriage Certificate Translation for UK Visa & Legal Use
Everything you need to know about translating your Chinese marriage certificate (结婚证 Jiéhün Zhèng) for UK spouse visa applications, settlement and court use. We cover Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan formats.
Understanding the Chinese Marriage Certificate (结婚证)
Did you marry in China? If you are applying for a UK spouse visa or settlement, or you need your marriage recognised by a court in England and Wales, you need a certified English translation of your Chinese marriage certificate. The Chinese certificate — the 结婚证 (Jiéhün Zhèng) — looks very different from a Western one. A good translation depends on knowing how it is put together.
UKVI Mandatory Requirement
UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) needs a certified translation, from a qualified translator, for every document that is not in English or Welsh. Your Chinese marriage certificate translation must carry a certification statement, the translator's credentials, their signature and the date. This applies to spouse visas (Appendix FM), unmarried partner applications, settlement (ILR) and British citizenship (naturalisation).
The Red Booklet Format: What Each Page Contains
The modern Chinese marriage certificate is a red booklet (红本 hóng běn). The Civil Affairs Bureau (民政局 Mínzhèng Jú) issues it. Western countries usually use a single page, but the Chinese certificate runs to several pages. Each spouse gets their own copy. Here is what the booklet usually holds:
Front Cover
A deep red cover with gold text: “中华人民共和国结婚证” (Marriage Certificate of the People's Republic of China), plus the national emblem. The translation must describe the cover too.
Page 1 — Certificate Details
This page holds the marriage certificate number (结婚证字号), both names (持证人), gender (性别), date of birth (出生日期), nationality (国籍) and ID number (身份证号). It matters most for your visa, so it must be translated exactly.
Page 2 — Registration Information
This page shows the date the marriage was registered (登记日期), the office that registered it (登记机关) and the statement that the marriage meets the Marriage Law of the People's Republic of China. It also carries the red seal (chop) of the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Photo Page
This page carries the couple's official photo, usually a passport-style colour photo of both spouses together. An embossed seal (钢印 gāng yìn) is pressed across the edge of the photo to stop forgery. The translation must mention it.
Notes/Remarks Page
A blank page kept for official changes. If anything is written there, such as a name correction or a re-registration, it must be translated. Even a blank page should be marked “[Blank page — no content]”.
Simplified Chinese Translation Challenges
Chinese marriage certificates are hard to translate. They need skills that go beyond general Chinese-English translation:
Legal Terminology
Chinese legal documents use formal official language (公文语言 gōngwén yúyán), not everyday Mandarin. Terms such as 登记机关 (registration authority), 持证人 (certificate holder) and 符合中华人民共和国婚姻法 (compliant with PRC Marriage Law) need exact legal wording in English.
Seals and Chops
Chinese official documents are validated by red ink seals (印章 yìnzhāng), not signatures. A marriage certificate carries several chops: the Civil Affairs Bureau seal, embossed anti-forgery stamps and sometimes an official's own seal. Each one must be named and translated.
Character Variants
Mainland China uses Simplified Chinese (简体字). But older certificates, and some from ethnic minority regions, may use Traditional characters or other forms. Names can also use rare or old characters that standard dictionaries leave out.
Marriage Registration in China: The Civil Affairs Bureau Process
Knowing how marriages are registered in China helps translators and visa caseworkers check that a certificate is genuine:
Application at Civil Affairs Bureau (民政局)
Both people go in person to the Marriage Registration Office (婚姻登记处 Hünyīn Děngjì Chù). It must be in the district where one of them has their household registration (户口 hùkóu). If one spouse is foreign, the marriage is registered at the provincial Civil Affairs Bureau instead.
Apostille from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (外交部 Wàijiāo Bù), or an authorised local Foreign Affairs Office, then attaches an apostille to the notarial certificate. Since 7 November 2023 this single step replaces both the old MFA authentication and legalisation by the British Embassy. If your document was already legalised by the embassy before that date, that legalisation still counts — you do not need to redo it.
Hong Kong Exception
Hong Kong SAR is covered by the Hague Apostille Convention, and has been for decades — long before Mainland China joined in 2023. If your marriage was registered in Hong Kong, you can get an apostille straight from the Hong Kong High Court. See our UK Apostille Process Guide for details.
Important: Legalisation vs Translation
Legalisation and certified translation are two different things. UKVI wants both a certified English translation and, in some cases, legalisation of the original. The translation itself does not need to be legalised. It only has to meet UKVI's certification standards. Not every spouse visa application needs the certificate legalised, but UKVI may ask for it, especially for old certificates or difficult cases.
Common Issues with Chinese Marriage Certificates
Photograph Requirements
The photo page must be clear in your scan. If the embossed seal over the photo cannot be read, UKVI may query the document. Scan in colour at 300 DPI or better. If the photo has faded or been damaged, get a replacement certificate from the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Handwritten Older Certificates
Certificates from before 2004, and above all before 1980, may be part or fully handwritten. Chinese calligraphy can be very hard to read, even for native speakers. If the translator cannot make out a character, they should write “[Character illegible]” instead of guessing, and add a translator's note about it.
Dual-Language Certificates from Hong Kong
Hong Kong marriage certificates usually carry both Traditional Chinese and English. When both are there, UKVI may accept the English on its own. But if the two versions differ, or the English part is incomplete, it is safer to get a certified translation of the Chinese text.
International Marriages Registered in China
If one spouse is a foreign national, the certificate writes their name in Chinese characters that copy the sound. The translator must check it against that spouse's passport so the spelling matches exactly. The certificate also shows the foreign spouse's nationality and passport number.
Name Changes After Marriage
Chinese women do not usually change their surname when they marry. Each spouse keeps their birth name. But Chinese nationals living abroad may have taken a Western first name on the passport. The translator must match the Chinese name on the certificate to the passport name, and note any difference.
Step-by-Step: Getting Your Chinese Marriage Certificate Translated
Prepare Your Certificate
Scan every page of the red booklet in colour at 300 DPI or better: the cover, all inside pages, the photo page and any blank pages. Check that every seal and stamp is clear. If your certificate predates 2004, take extra care, because faded ink scans badly.
Upload for Translation
Upload the full scan to a UKVI-certified translation service. Add a photo or scan of both spouses' passport ID pages, so the translator can check the name spellings. Say whether the certificate is from Mainland China, Hong Kong or Taiwan, because that changes how it is translated.
Review and Receive
Your certified translation will have the full English text, a description of every seal and stamp, translator's notes on any problems (such as characters you cannot read or names that do not match), the certification statement and the translator's credentials. It arrives as a signed and stamped PDF, ready to send with your visa application.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to translate every page of the red booklet, including blank pages?
Yes. UKVI expects the whole document to be translated. Include every page, and mark blank ones as “[This page is intentionally blank]” or similar. If you send only part of it, such as the main certificate page, UKVI may query or reject it, and your application will be delayed.
My Chinese marriage certificate is very old and the text is faded. Can it still be translated?
Yes, but the scan quality decides everything. Use the highest resolution on your scanner, and scan in colour. If a character really cannot be read, the translator will say so and explain what that part of the document is for. If the certificate is badly damaged, think about getting a replacement from the Civil Affairs Bureau. It will be in the modern format but will show your original registration date.
Do I need an apostille for my Chinese marriage certificate?
Usually yes. The Hague Apostille Convention came into force for Mainland China on 7 November 2023, so PRC documents now take an apostille instead of the old three-step embassy legalisation. In practice you first get a notarial certificate from a Chinese notary public, then an apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or an authorised local Foreign Affairs Office. Hong Kong SAR documents have been eligible for an apostille for decades. Documents legalised before 7 November 2023 stay valid.
The name on my Chinese marriage certificate doesn't match my passport exactly. What should I do?
This happens a lot, above all with older certificates or Cantonese and non-standard spellings. The translator should use the passport spelling and add a note that explains the difference. For example: “The Chinese characters 陈伟 on the certificate correspond to the passport holder's name Chen Wei (passport number XX).” If the names differ a lot, you may also want a deed poll or statutory declaration to link them.
How much does Chinese marriage certificate translation cost and how long does it take?
At CertifiedVisaTranslation.com, a standard Chinese marriage certificate translation costs £17.99 per page with 24-hour delivery, or £29.99 per page for 8-hour rush delivery. A modern red booklet usually has 2–3 pages to translate. Older single-sheet certificates are usually 1 page. Every price includes UKVI certification, translator credentials and delivery as a signed and stamped PDF.
