Child Dependant Visa Translation Requirements UK 2026

Bringing a child to the UK as a dependant needs more documents than an adult application. You need birth certificates, proof of the parent-child link and sometimes court orders. Every document that is not in English needs a certified translation.

A child dependant visa lets children under 18 join or stay with a parent who has leave to remain in the UK on a qualifying route (Skilled Worker, spouse/partner visa, student visa, or ILR). You need more documents than an adult applicant does. UKVI has to check who the child is, how the child is related to both parents, and that everyone with parental responsibility agrees to the move.

The Core Translation Requirement: Birth Certificate

Every child dependant visa application needs a certified translation of the child's birth certificate if it is not in English. There is no way around this. The birth certificate shows the child's identity, date of birth, nationality and, most importantly, the names of both parents. Without it, UKVI cannot check the parent-child link you have claimed.

Parental Consent Letters: What They Must Contain

If the child has two parents and one stays abroad, UKVI wants written consent from that parent. The letter must confirm they agree to the child living in the UK. If the letter is not in English, it needs a certified translation. The translation must include:

Required Content in a Parental Consent Letter (Translated)

  • Full name and relationship of the consenting parent
  • Full name and date of birth of the child
  • A clear statement agreeing to the child moving to the United Kingdom
  • Name of the accompanying parent or guardian in the UK
  • Signed and dated, ideally notarised or witnessed

Sole Responsibility Applications

One parent may claim "sole parental responsibility" for the child. This means they make all decisions about the child's upbringing, with no input from the other parent. UKVI asks for strong evidence here, and the bar is high. These documents may need translation:

Sole Responsibility: What UKVI Looks For

Sole responsibility is a difficult legal test. UKVI will look closely at whether that parent really makes all the big decisions for the child. Evidence that may need translation includes:

  • Court orders granting sole custody (translated in full)
  • Letters from schools, doctors or authorities that name only one parent as the responsible adult
  • Evidence that the absent parent has no contact or involvement
  • Money records that show only one parent supports the child

Adopted Children: Additional Translation Requirements

Adopted children need a certified translation of their adoption decree. UKVI has to check that the adoption is legally valid both in the country where it happened and in the UK. Not every overseas adoption is recognised in UK law. Some need a UK adoption order. If the adoption took place in a country with difficult adoption law (intercountry adoption), speak to an immigration solicitor before you apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

My child's birth certificate shows a different surname from my own. Will UKVI query this?

Yes, different surnames can raise questions. The birth certificate may show the child under one parent's surname while you apply under another name, for example from an earlier marriage. If so, add evidence that explains the link, such as your own birth certificate or marriage certificate. All of these documents need a certified translation.

The other parent will not provide written consent. What can I do?

If you cannot get written consent, you must show one of three things: (a) you have sole parental responsibility under a court order, (b) the other parent has died (with a translated death certificate), or (c) the other parent has abandoned the child (with strong evidence). This is legally difficult, so speak to an immigration solicitor. UKVI will not drop the consent rule without clear evidence.

My child was born in the UK. Do I need to translate anything?

Birth certificates for children born in the UK are in English, so they do not need translation. But if you use documents in another language to support the application, such as a marriage certificate or the other parent's ID, those still need a certified translation.
