The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) regulates vets in the UK. If you qualified overseas, you have two options. Either (a) you hold a degree from an RCVS-recognised university, or (b) you pass the Statutory Membership Examination. Both routes need certified translations of your supporting documents.

The Two Routes to RCVS Registration

Recognised Degrees

Did you graduate from an RCVS-recognised university? Some in Ireland, Australia, NZ, South Africa, the US, and Canada count. If so, you can register directly with translated documents.

Statutory Membership Exam

If your course is not recognised, you take the Statutory Exam. It has two parts, written and practical, and comes after you send in your documents.

Day One Competences

RCVS assessments focus on the "Day One Competences". These are the clinical and professional skills every new graduate must have. They cover several species (small animal, horse, farm, exotic) and a wide range of surgical and medical work. Your translated course content must show that you covered:

  • Anatomy and physiology across species
  • Clinical medicine and surgery
  • Anaesthesia and analgesia
  • Food hygiene and animal welfare law
  • Public health and zoonoses
  • Professional ethics and practice management

Multi-Species Coverage Is Critical

Many overseas courses focus on small animals and give little farm or horse experience. RCVS wants proof that you covered every species group. Your translated transcript and EMS log must show that range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which universities are RCVS-recognised without statutory exam?

RCVS publishes a list. As a rough guide, it covers all UK vet schools, plus many in Ireland, Australia, NZ, the USA, Canada, and some South African courses. Check the RCVS website for the current list before you apply.

Do I need translation for the Statutory Exam route specifically?

Yes. To be eligible for the Statutory Exam, you must translate all your academic evidence. The exam itself is in English and takes place in the UK.

How long does RCVS assessment take?

For recognised degrees, usually 6–12 weeks once your documents are complete. On the Statutory Exam route, it usually takes 12–24 months from application to registration.

Can vet nurses / vet technicians use the same translations?

No. Vet nurses go on a separate RCVS register with different rules. The same translation principles still apply, though.
