Ukrainian Document Translation for UK Visa: Complete Guide
What Ukrainian applicants need to know about certified document translation for the UK — Homes for Ukraine, Ukraine Extension Scheme, spouse visas, Skilled Worker, and Student routes. It covers paper documents and digital Diia documents.
Since early 2022 the UK has welcomed over 280,000 Ukrainians. They came under the Homes for Ukraine (HfU) scheme and the Ukraine Extension Scheme. In 2024 the government launched the Ukraine Permission Extension (UPE) scheme. It lets sponsored Ukrainians already here stay for another 18 months. You may be applying for the first time, extending, switching routes, or bringing family. In every case, any Ukrainian document that is not in English needs a certified English translation before you send it to UKVI.
Ukrainian, Russian, and Cyrillic: What You Need to Know
Ukrainian is the only official language of Ukraine. But documents issued before 1991, such as Soviet-era birth and marriage records, may be in Russian or in both languages. Documents issued in Crimea or parts of Donbas after 2014 may also be in Russian. UKVI accepts both languages. The certified translator must state clearly in the declaration which language the document was in.
Ukrainian uses its own version of the Cyrillic alphabet. It has letters that Russian does not have (і, ї, є, ґ). Names must be spelled using the official Ukrainian romanisation standard from the applicant's international passport. For example, “Volodymyr” rather than “Vladimir”.

Homes for Ukraine Scheme: Translation Requirements
The Homes for Ukraine scheme asks for fewer supporting documents than standard visa routes. But you must still send:
Minimum Documents for HfU
- A valid Ukrainian international passport. It usually needs no translation, as the details page is in Latin script
- Proof you lived in Ukraine before 1 January 2022, such as an internal passport, a rental agreement or a utility bill. All need translation if they are in Ukrainian
- For children: a Ukrainian birth certificate with parental consent. Both need translation
- A marriage certificate if you travel with your spouse. It needs translation
The Ukrainian Internal Passport vs International Passport
Since 2016 Ukraine has replaced its old paper internal passport booklet with an ID-1 plastic card. Many older Ukrainians still hold the booklet. Both count as valid internal passports for a UK application. But the translation needs are different:
Plastic ID Card (post-2016)
- Bilingual Ukrainian/English biographic data
- Machine-readable zone
- Only the extra Ukrainian text may need translation
- Usually 1 page to translate
Booklet Passport (pre-2016)
- Ukrainian-only text
- Registration (propiska) history inside
- Marriage and children stamps
- Usually 3–5 pages to translate
Diia Digital Documents — Are They Accepted?
Ukraine runs Diia, a government app that holds digital versions of passports, driving licences and other documents. UK authorities usually prefer paper or PDF documents from the government over app versions. For a visa application, download and print the PDF version of your Diia document. You can then have it certified-translated. The translator should note that the source was a Diia digital document.
Tip: Diia documents carry a QR code that links to the official Ukrainian government checking portal. A good certified translator keeps that QR code in the translated PDF, so UKVI caseworkers can check the document is real.
Apostille for Ukrainian Documents
Ukraine is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. Civil registry documents (birth, marriage, death and divorce certificates), court rulings and notarised documents can all be apostilled. Depending on the document type, this is done by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Ministry of Justice. An apostille is:
- Not needed for most UK visa routes (HfU, Ukraine Extension Scheme, spouse, Skilled Worker).
- Sometimes needed to register a UK marriage or civil partnership, for adoption, or for some court cases.
- Always done before translation, because the apostille itself must be translated with the document.

Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme (UPE) Documents
The Ukraine Permission Extension scheme started in 2024. It lets people who already hold a visa under HfU, the Ukraine Family Scheme or the Ukraine Extension Scheme apply for another 18 months. Most applicants only need their current BRP or eVisa, plus new proof that they are still in the UK. But if children were born in the UK, or family members join you, their Ukrainian birth or marriage certificates will need translation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my Ukrainian international passport need translation?
Usually not. The details page is in both Ukrainian and English, with names in Latin script. But visa stamps and notes written only in Ukrainian may need translation if they matter to your application.
My Ukrainian diploma was issued during Soviet times. Who recognises it?
Soviet-era diplomas are recognised by the successor states, Ukraine included. UKVI and ECCTIS accept them when assessing qualifications. The translation should keep the Soviet-era name of the institution as printed. The translator can add a note giving the modern name if that helps.
Can I use a Russian-language document issued in Ukraine before 1991?
Yes. Documents issued by Soviet authorities are valid. A certified translator who is fluent in Russian can translate them, and many Ukrainian translators are. The translator's declaration should name the source language.
What if my documents are in occupied territory or destroyed?
UKVI has published extra flexibility for Ukrainian applicants who cannot get original documents because of the war. It accepts other evidence with a witness statement. Any supporting documents you do have, such as photos or digital copies, should still be certified-translated.
How much does Ukrainian translation cost?
Usually £17.99–£23.99 per page. A birth or marriage certificate is 1 page. A diploma with its academic supplement can run to 4–8 pages. We offer a same-day rush service for urgent applications.
