Thai Marriage Certificate Translation for UK Visa
Thai marriage certificates (ทะเบียนสมรส — Thabien Somrut) are in Thai script only. They use the Buddhist Era calendar, which runs 543 years ahead of the Gregorian one. Both the script and the calendar mean you need a specialist certified translation for UK spouse and family visa applications.
Many people from Thailand apply for UK visas, above all for spouse visas and family settlement. UK–Thai couples often need certified translation of Thai civil documents, such as marriage certificates, for UK entry clearance. The Thai script and calendar make specialist translation essential.
Civil Marriage at the Amphur
In Thailand, you register a legal marriage at the district office (Amphur / อำเภอ). You sign the marriage register and the office records it. The Amphur then issues the ทะเบียนสมรส (Thabien Somrut) — the marriage registration document. This is the legal document UKVI needs. A traditional or religious ceremony on its own, with no Amphur registration, is not a legal marriage in Thailand or for UK visa purposes.
Thai Marriage Documents for UKVI
ทะเบียนสมรส (Thabien Somrut)
The official marriage registration certificate issued by the Amphur. It is in Thai script only. It shows both spouses' full names, ID numbers, the date of marriage, and the Amphur officer's signature and stamp. This is the main document UKVI needs.
สำเนาทะเบียนสมรส (Copy of Marriage Registration)
A certified copy of the marriage registration extract. Any Amphur office can issue one on request. It is easier to get than the original. UKVI accepts it with a certified translation.
Bilingual Thai/English Extract
Some Amphur offices issue bilingual marriage certificate extracts on request. Even so, UKVI still wants a certified translation from a qualified translator. The bilingual version on its own is not enough.
Thai Family Registration Book
The Tabien Baan (ทะเบียนบ้าน) is Thailand's household registration document. It lists who lives in the house and can show marital status. People sometimes send it as extra evidence with the marriage certificate.
Thai Script
Thai script is an abugida, or alphasyllabary. It has 44 consonants and 15 basic vowel symbols. Thai is written without spaces between words, so the reader works out where each word ends. Thai has five tones, shown by consonant class and tone marks. The script runs left to right, but its structure is very different from the Latin alphabet.
Thai names have no fixed spelling in English. People choose their own spelling, or an official chooses it for them. So the same Thai name can appear in several English spellings. The spelling on a marriage certificate may differ from the one in the passport. Your certified translator will match the passport spelling where it is known.
The Buddhist Era Calendar
Converting Thai Buddhist Era to Gregorian
- Thai official documents use the Buddhist Era (BE) calendar. It starts 543 years before the Common Era. The year 2026 CE = 2569 BE.
- To convert: subtract 543 from the BE year to get the CE year. For example, 2565 BE = 2022 CE.
- Your certified translator will convert all dates from BE to CE and include both in the translation.
- Some documents may show the year in both BE and CE — your translator will note this.
Thai Naming Conventions
Thai naming practices differ from Western conventions in important ways:
- Nicknames: Most Thai people use a short nickname (ชื่อเล่น) in daily life. It usually looks nothing like their legal name. The marriage certificate shows the full formal name, which even close friends may not know.
- Surname adoption: Thailand made family surnames compulsory in 1913. Each family has its own unique surname. No unrelated family may share it.
- Women and surnames: Thai women have the legal right to keep their birth surname after marriage, or to take their husband's surname. The marriage certificate shows the name used at registration. This may differ from the name used after the marriage.
- Title system: Thai names include titles (นาย Mr., นาง Mrs., นางสาว Miss) that appear on official documents. A certified translation always includes them.

Frequently Asked Questions
We had a traditional Thai Buddhist blessing ceremony but did not register at the Amphur. Will UKVI recognise our marriage?
No. UKVI needs proof of a legally recognised marriage. A traditional blessing ceremony (งานแต่งงาน) with no Amphur registration is not a legal marriage under Thai law. You must register the marriage at the Amphur and get the Thabien Somrut. Only then will UKVI treat your relationship as a marriage for visa purposes.
My Thai wife uses a different surname in the UK than on the marriage certificate. What should I do?
Send the marriage certificate with a certified translation, plus any deed poll or legal name change papers. Your wife may have changed her name informally, which is common for Thai people in the UK. In that case you may need a statutory declaration, or other evidence that explains the change. Your immigration solicitor can advise on the best approach.
