Thai Documents Translation UK Visa: 2026 Complete Guide

Thailand is one of the most common Spouse visa source countries, after the Philippines and Pakistan. Thai civil documents use the Buddhist Era calendar. They need two-step legalisation through MFA Chaeng Wattana. They also have their own rules for spelling names in English. This guide covers every main document type for UK visa applications.

Buddhist Era (BE) Date Conversion

Thai documents use the Buddhist Era calendar: BE = CE + 543. A document dated 2567 BE is 2024 CE. Translators must convert every date: birth, marriage, issue, and signature. They usually show both formats, such as "15 March 2567 BE (2024 CE)". Wrong dates are one of the top reasons Thai Spouse visa applications are refused.

Tabien Baan Deep-dive

The tabien baan (house registration) is a blue book issued by the local amphoe, or district office. It lists everyone registered at an address. For UK visas, it works as proof of address and as proof of who is in the family. Versions include:

  • Tor Ror 14 — main household register (most common)
  • Tor Ror 13 — foreign residents at the address
  • Tor Ror 1/1 or similar — original registration for birth verification
  • Tor Ror 20 — certificate of residence (individual)

MFA Chaeng Wattana Legalisation

Thailand is NOT a Hague Convention country. Documents go through these steps:

  1. Get a Thai-English version from MFA Chaeng Wattana (Department of Consular Affairs)
  2. MFA issues official stamp & seal on the Thai-English version
  3. UK Embassy Bangkok legalisation of the MFA stamp — no longer needed for most UKVI purposes, because the MFA stamp is usually enough
  4. Certified translation — the MFA version is often re-translated for UKVI, because the MFA's own English is sometimes not exact

Thai Script & Transliteration

Thai names use the Royal Thai General System of Transcription (RTGS). But passports often use the spelling the holder chose when the passport was issued. Your translation must match the passport, not RTGS. Common name spellings:

ThaiRTGSCommon Passport Variants
พรPhonPorn, Phorn
ชัยChaiChai, Chay
ศรีSiSri, Sree, Si
ธรThonThorn, Torn

Translator Tip: Always Request Passport Copy

Before you translate any Thai civil document, send your translator a copy of the applicant's passport. This makes sure the English spelling of the name matches exactly. It prevents UKVI's most common Spouse visa refusal: names that do not match across documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the MFA Thai-English version replace certified translation?

Not reliably. Some UKVI officers accept the MFA version, but many question it. A separate certified translation by a UK-qualified translator is the safest route.

Do I need a new tabien baan for each visa application?

The tabien baan changes over time, and UKVI prefers a copy issued within the last 3 months. Ask your amphoe for a fresh copy before you start the translation.

My Thai partner changed name multiple times. What documents do I need?

You need the full chain: birth certificate (original name) + each ใบเปลี่ยนชื่อ (name change certificate) + current passport. Translate every step so UKVI can follow the name from birth to today.

Can I marry in Thailand and then apply for UK Spouse visa?

Yes. Register the marriage at a Thai amphoe, legalise it at the MFA, translate it, then apply. The UK Spouse visa financial requirement (£29,000+) still applies to the UK sponsor.
