Temporary Worker Visa Translation Requirements UK 2026

The UK Temporary Worker visa has five sub-routes. Each one asks for different documents. This guide explains what you need to translate for each T5 sub-route.

The UK Temporary Worker visa (once called T5) covers several routes. They are for people coming to the UK for short-term work, voluntary work, or an exchange. It differs from the Skilled Worker visa in two ways. First, each route has a time limit, usually 12 to 24 months. Second, most routes give you no direct path to settlement (ILR). Every Temporary Worker route needs a Certificate of Sponsorship from a licensed UK sponsor.

Universal Requirement: Personal Identity Documents

Whichever sub-route you use, your personal identity documents need a certified English translation if they are in another language. That includes your birth certificate, if you send one. The lists below cover the extra documents for each sub-route.

T5 Sub-Route Translation Requirements

1. Creative Worker

For entertainers, musicians, artists, and other creative workers. It lasts up to 12 months. You can sometimes extend it to 24 months.

Documents that may need translation:

  • Your contract or offer letter from the UK creative organisation. Most UK contracts are already in English, so this often does not apply
  • Proof of your portfolio, awards, or recognition from bodies abroad. Translate award citations, festival programmes, and official recognition letters
  • Membership papers from a union or creative body abroad, if you use them as evidence

2. Charity Worker

For unpaid voluntary work in the UK with a registered charity. It lasts up to 12 months. The work must be unpaid, apart from expenses.

Documents that may need translation:

  • Letters from the partner organisation abroad that is sending you
  • Charity registration papers from abroad, if you use them to show your link to charity work
  • References or letters from religious or charitable bodies abroad that are not in English

3. Religious Worker

For people doing non-pastoral religious work, such as supporting a religious order. It lasts up to 24 months. It is close to the Minister of Religion route, but not the same.

Documents that may need translation:

  • Your ordination or religious calling certificate from a religious body abroad, if it is not in English
  • A letter from the religious organisation abroad confirming your role and your qualifications
  • Proof of religious training or study, such as transcripts and certificates, if they are not in English

4. Government Authorised Exchange (GAE)

For approved exchange programmes, work experience, training, research, or a fellowship. It lasts 12 or 24 months, depending on the programme.

Documents that may need translation:

  • Your programme acceptance letter from a government ministry at home or an approved programme body, if it is not in English
  • Any academic or professional qualification that supports the exchange, if it is not in English

5. International Agreement

For people providing services under an international law duty. That covers private servants of diplomats, staff of overseas governments, and GATS service providers. It lasts up to 24 months.

Documents that may need translation:

  • Your service contract with the overseas employer, showing which services international law covers. Translate it if it is not in English
  • A letter from the overseas employer confirming your role and which international agreement applies
  • If you are a private servant of a diplomat: your contract with the diplomat, translated if it is not in English

Certificate of Sponsorship

Every Temporary Worker route needs a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from a licensed UK sponsor. Your sponsor assigns it online, so there is no paper certificate. Keep any supporting papers from the sponsor, such as the formal offer letter. UKVI may ask to see them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Certificate of Sponsorship itself need to be translated?

No. Your UK sponsor assigns the Certificate of Sponsorship online. You just enter its reference number in your visa application. There is no paper document to translate.

I am applying as a Charity Worker — do I need to prove my overseas charitable work?

No. The Charity Worker route does not ask for a background in charity work. It is open to anyone coming to do voluntary work with a licensed UK charity sponsor. But if you do send letters or references from charities abroad, translate them if they are not in English. The document that matters most is the Certificate of Sponsorship from the licensed UK charity.
