Tamil Document Translation for UK Visa Applications
A guide for Tamil speakers from India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Malaysia. Here is how to translate Tamil documents for a UK visa application in 2026.
Do Tamil Speakers Need Document Translation for UK Visas?
Yes. If your documents are written in Tamil (தமிழ்), the Home Office needs certified English translations of them. This applies to Tamil speakers from Tamil Nadu (India), Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, and Tamil communities anywhere else in the world.
Tamil is one of the world's oldest classical languages. Over 75 million people speak it. The script is also complex. It has 12 vowels, 18 consonants, and 216 combined characters, so it is one of the most character-rich scripts still in daily use. Each Tamil-speaking country also has its own document layouts, official wording, and registration system. All of that affects how your document is translated.
UKVI Requirement for Tamil Documents
UK Visas and Immigration needs certified English translations of every document that is not in English or Welsh. That is true for Tamil documents from any country. Machine translations are not accepted. Your translator must sign a certification statement. It confirms they can work in Tamil and English, and that the translation is accurate. Even if part of the document is already in English (common in Singapore and Malaysia), the Tamil parts must all be translated.
Tamil Translation Pricing
Tamil script has a large character set of 246 symbols, so it needs a specialist. Tamil documents cost £17.99 per page for certified translation. This rate covers all Tamil-script documents, whatever the country (India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, or Malaysia).
Tamil Across Four Countries: Document Format Differences
Four main countries use Tamil in official documents. Each has its own civil registration system and its own document formats:
Tamil Nadu, India
- Official status: Tamil is the official state language
- Documents: Birth, death, and marriage certificates from the Tamil Nadu civil registry. These come in Tamil, in English, or in both
- System: Registration of Births and Deaths Act 1969; marriage registration under Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act
- Apostille: Available through India MEA; nearest centre in Chennai
- Common challenge: Older rural records are all in Tamil script. Newer city certificates are more often bilingual
Sri Lanka
- Official status: Tamil is an official language alongside Sinhala and English
- Documents: Sri Lankan civil registry documents come in Sinhala, Tamil, or English. It depends on the region and the language the applicant chose
- System: Registrar General's Department; births registered at Divisional Secretariat offices
- Apostille: Sri Lanka has not joined the Hague Convention — no apostille, legalisation required
- Common challenge: Tamil-medium documents from the Northern and Eastern provinces. Tamil script often sits next to Sinhala or English
Singapore
- Official status: Tamil is one of four official languages
- Documents: The Registry of Births and Deaths issues birth, marriage, and death certificates in English. Tamil is rarely used on official documents
- System: ICA (Immigration and Checkpoints Authority)
- Common challenge: Community documents, such as temple marriage certificates and community records, may be in Tamil script
- Note: Most Singapore official documents are already in English, so you may not need a translation
Malaysia
- Official status: Tamil is not an official language in Malaysia (Bahasa Malaysia is official)
- Documents: The National Registration Department (JPN) issues civil documents in Bahasa Malaysia and English
- Common challenge: Estate community records, Hindu temple marriage certificates, and older community records may be in Tamil script
- Note: Malaysian official documents are in Bahasa Malaysia or English. Tamil translation is usually only needed for community or religious records
Common Tamil Documents Requiring Translation
Birth Certificates (பிறப்பு சான்றிதழ்)
Tamil Nadu civil registry birth certificates and Sri Lankan Tamil-medium birth certificates. You need one for every UK visa type. Older certificates may be in Tamil only. Newer ones are often bilingual.
Marriage Certificates (திருமண சான்றிதழ்)
Tamil Nadu civil marriage certificates, Sri Lankan Tamil marriage registrations, and Hindu temple marriage certificates. You need one for a spouse or family visa.
Death Certificates (இறப்பு சான்றிதழ்)
Tamil Nadu and Sri Lankan death certificates for ancestry visas, bereavement paperwork, and estate matters. Death certificates from smaller towns are often in Tamil script.
Police Clearance Certificates
Indian Police Clearance Certificates for Tamil Nadu applicants, and Sri Lankan police clearances (issued through the Ministry of Defence). Both can contain Tamil text. You need one for a UK ILR application.
Bank Statements (வங்கி அறிக்கை)
Statements from Tamil Nadu cooperative banks and big Indian banks often mix Tamil with English. Sri Lankan statements can have Sinhala and Tamil sections.
Divorce Decrees (விவாகரத்து ஆணை)
Divorce orders from Tamil Nadu family courts and Sri Lankan courts. If the hearing was in Tamil, the order will contain Tamil text. You need one for a spouse visa after remarriage.
Tamil Script: Why Specialist Translators Are Essential
Tamil script is one of the most complex writing systems still in daily use. Here is why a specialist translator matters for a UKVI-ready translation:
246 Character Set
Tamil has 12 vowels, 18 consonants, and 216 combined characters (consonant plus vowel), plus the special ஃ (aytam) symbol. The translator must read each one correctly.
Grantha Numerals and Traditional Calendar
Older Tamil documents use traditional Tamil numerals (the traditional Tamil number system) instead of Arabic numerals. They may also use the traditional Tamil calendar, with month names such as Chittirai and Vaikasi.
Classical vs Modern Tamil
Tamil Nadu civil registry documents from before the 1960s may use Classical Tamil script and words. These differ a lot from modern written Tamil. Your translator needs to handle both.
Country-Specific Administrative Vocabulary
Official Tamil wording is not the same in India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Malaysia. A Tamil Nadu village records officer uses different words from a Sri Lankan Grama Sevaka officer, even in Tamil.
Sri Lankan Tamil Documents: Special Considerations
Trilingual Civil Documents
Sri Lankan civil documents sometimes come in three languages: Sinhala, Tamil, and English. In the Northern Province (Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar, Vavuniya) and the Eastern Province (Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ampara), Tamil is usually the main language. In Colombo and the South, Sinhala usually comes first. UKVI needs every non-English section translated.
Documents from Conflict-Affected Northern Provinces
Many Sri Lankan Tamil applicants have few documents left after the civil conflict that ended in 2009. Papers from Jaffna and other northern areas may be incomplete, damaged, or rebuilt copies. Sri Lanka's Registrar General's Department can re-register births and deaths where the original records were destroyed. We translate both original and rebuilt documents. If the document is a later reconstruction, we say so in the certification statement.
Sri Lanka: No Apostille Available
Sri Lanka is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so Sri Lankan documents cannot be apostilled. They go through consular legalisation instead. Either way, authentication never replaces a certified translation for a UK visa — you need the translation as well.
Step-by-Step Process for Tamil Document Translation
Check Your Document's Country and Language
Work out where your document is from and what language it uses:
- Tamil Nadu, India: usually Tamil only, or Tamil and English together
- Sri Lanka: Tamil, Sinhala, English, or all three, depending on the province
- Singapore: official documents are usually in English. Check for any Tamil text
- Malaysia: official documents are in Bahasa Malaysia or English. Tamil appears only in community or religious records
Get Official Copies
Where to get official documents in each country:
- Tamil Nadu, India: Your local panchayat, municipal corporation, or Sub-Registrar's office. You can also apply online through the Tamil Nadu e-Sevai portal
- Sri Lanka: The Divisional Secretariat office for births and deaths. The Registrar General's Department for duplicates
- Singapore: ICA (Immigration and Checkpoints Authority) for civil registry documents
- Malaysia: JPN (National Registration Department) for civil documents. Your temple or mosque for religious certificates
Scan at High Resolution
Many Tamil characters look alike and differ only by a small mark. Scan at 300 DPI or higher. With older handwritten documents, check that the scan shows every detail. The combined characters are easy to misread on a poor scan.
Upload for Instant Quote
Upload your Tamil document for an instant quote. We detect Tamil script automatically and price it at £17.99 per page. You see the total cost before you pay.
Expert Translation with Country-Specific Terminology
We give your document to a Tamil-English specialist who knows documents from your country. They will:
- Handle all 246 Tamil characters accurately
- Convert Tamil calendar dates and traditional Tamil numerals into modern ones
- Use the right official wording for your country
- Translate all stamps, seals, and official markings
- Note any unclear or damaged parts

Frequently Asked Questions — Tamil Translation
My Tamil Nadu birth certificate has English pre-printed text but the names and dates are in Tamil — what do I need?
You need a certified translation of the whole document. UKVI wants the full document translated. Even if most of it is in English, the Tamil parts must be translated too. Those parts usually hold the person's name, the parents' names, and the place of registration. Our translators work with these mixed documents every day and cover every section.
I am from Sri Lanka and my birth certificate is in Sinhala, not Tamil — can you help?
Yes. We translate Sri Lankan documents in Sinhala too. Upload the file and our system will spot the Sinhala script. Sinhala also costs £17.99 per page. If your document uses all three languages, we translate every non-English part.
I am from Singapore and my birth certificate is in English — do I need a translation?
If your Singapore birth, marriage, or death certificate is all in English, you do not need a translation for UKVI. Singapore's ICA issues all standard civil documents in English. But any supporting document in Tamil still needs a certified translation. That includes Hindu temple marriage certificates, community records, and older papers.
Can you translate older handwritten Tamil civil registry documents?
Yes. Our Tamil translators work often with handwritten records from Tamil Nadu taluk offices and Sri Lankan divisional secretariats. Please send the clearest scan you can. If the document is from before 1940, it may use Classical Tamil script or old official wording. Tell us the rough date when you upload, so we can assign the right specialist.
Do I need MEA apostille for Tamil Nadu documents?
For most UK visa applications, UKVI does not ask for an MEA apostille. A certified translation of the official document is enough. Employers, universities, or certain visa routes may still ask for one. The nearest MEA apostille centre for Tamil Nadu documents is in Chennai. As with all Indian documents, an apostille does not replace a certified translation. You need both.
How quickly can Tamil documents be translated?
Standard turnaround is within 24 hours. Harder documents can take up to 48 hours. That includes old handwritten records, three-language Sri Lankan documents, and long court decrees. Our Tamil specialists work fast without losing the accuracy UKVI expects.
