South African Birth Certificate Translation for UK Visa

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) issues South African birth certificates, and they are mostly in English. But the form is bilingual English/Afrikaans, so some field headings still need translating. More importantly, UKVI almost always wants the Unabridged (Full) version, not the shorter Abridged one.

Around 200,000 South African-born people live in the UK. They often apply for spouse visas, ancestry visas, and skilled worker routes. So your first step is to know which birth certificate UKVI wants, and which parts of it need translating.

Unabridged Certificate: The One UKVI Wants

The DHA issues two types of birth certificate. The Abridged one is a short, one-page form. The Unabridged one is the full form, also called the BI-24 full certificate or “full birth certificate”. UKVI almost always wants the Unabridged version, because it shows both parents' full details. The Abridged version leaves those out. If you only have the Abridged certificate, you must ask the DHA for the Unabridged one.

Afrikaans Bilingual Format

DHA documents are officially bilingual: English and Afrikaans. Field labels appear in both languages. Most of your personal details are in English. But some sections have Afrikaans-only headings or stamps, and those may need translating. Here are common Afrikaans words on South African birth certificates:

DHA Backlog Warning

Getting an Unabridged birth certificate from the DHA can take 6–12 weeks, because of long processing backlogs. If your UK visa is urgent, allow for this wait when you order your DHA documents. VFS Global offices in South Africa handle DHA applications. Premium walk-in services are also available for an extra fee.

South Africa's 11 Official Languages

South Africa has 12 official languages. DHA birth certificates always use English and Afrikaans. But supporting papers from other sources, above all rural or community records, may be in Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Tswana, or another official language. Any supporting document in a South African language other than English needs a certified translation.

Frequently Asked Questions

My South African birth certificate is mostly in English. Does it still need translation?

If your Unabridged birth certificate is fully in English, you need no translation. But if it has Afrikaans-only stamps, endorsements, or sections, those parts need a certified translation. In practice, most modern Unabridged certificates use bilingual English/Afrikaans headings with English personal details. Your translator can look at the document and confirm whether you need a translation.

I only have the Abridged certificate. What should I do?

Apply to the DHA for the Unabridged version. You can do this through VFS Global in South Africa, through an agent, or through the South African High Commission in London (limited service). It usually takes 6–12 weeks. Start as early as you can while you prepare your visa application.
