Social Worker HCPC Registration Translation UK 2026

Did you train as a social worker abroad? The HCPC no longer registers social workers. Since December 2019, that job belongs to Social Work England. In Scotland it is the SSSC, in Wales it is Social Care Wales, and in Northern Ireland it is the NISCC. Whichever regulator you apply to, you must send certified translations of your qualifications and work records. This guide explains what you need.

Social work is a regulated profession in the UK. To work as a social worker in England, you must be registered with Social Work England. The HCPC used to register social workers, but it stopped in December 2019. In the rest of the UK, the regulators are the SSSC (Scotland), Social Care Wales (Wales) and the NISCC (Northern Ireland). The HCPC still regulates other jobs, such as occupational therapists and physiotherapists. If you trained abroad, you need two things. You need professional registration with the right body. You also need immigration permission to work in the UK. Both need certified translations of your overseas documents.

Two Separate Translation Requirements

Overseas social workers in the UK need translations for two things. (1) Professional registration — documents for your social work regulator (qualifications, professional references, fitness to practise records). (2) Immigration/visa — documents for a Skilled Worker visa application (identity documents, qualifications). Both need certified translations, but they focus on different papers.

HCPC Registration: Documents Requiring Translation

If you qualified outside the UK, the HCPC asks for the documents below. They must be in English. Any document in another language needs a certified translation with it:

Documents to Translate for HCPC Registration

  • Social work degree certificate and transcript — Must show the course title, the institution, the level, and the date you were awarded it
  • Professional registration certificate from your home country — Proof that you are legally registered to work as a social worker in the country where you qualified
  • Good standing letter from your professional regulatory body — Must confirm you have no fitness to practise concerns or sanctions
  • Character references from employers — If they are in another language, they need a certified translation
  • Academic transcripts — Used to check how your training compares with UK social work degree standards

The HCPC Assessment Process for Overseas Applicants

The HCPC checks overseas applications against the UK Standards of Proficiency for Social Workers. If you qualified outside the EU/EEA, it compares your training with UK requirements. If it finds gaps in the first check, it may ask for more translated documents.

Social Work England vs HCPC: Which Applies to You?

Since December 2019, social workers in England must register with Social Work England (not HCPC). Social workers in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland register with their own regulators (Scottish Social Services Council, Social Care Wales, Northern Ireland Social Care Council). Scotland uses the SSSC and Wales uses Social Care Wales; the HCPC does not register social workers anywhere in the UK.

Translation Requirements Differ by Regulatory Body

Social Work England runs its own international application process. Its document list is similar to the HCPC one, but not the same. When you order certified translations, tell us which regulator you are applying to, because the documents can differ. Our certified translations are accepted by every UK social work regulator.

Visa Translation Requirements for Social Worker Route

Social work in the UK is on the Shortage Occupation List (SOL). That means it qualifies for the Skilled Worker visa at 80% of the standard salary threshold. To apply for a Skilled Worker visa as a social worker, you also need certified translations of:

  • Identity documents (birth certificate, if in a foreign language)
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Overseas qualifications relied upon for the Skilled Worker application

Frequently Asked Questions

Does HCPC accept translations from any certified translator?

The HCPC accepts translations from certified translators. The translator must sign a statement confirming that the translation is accurate and complete. They must also confirm that they can translate between the two languages. Our certified translations include a full translator's declaration that meets HCPC rules. The HCPC does not ask translators to belong to any specific professional body.

My good standing certificate from my home country is only valid for 3 months. Should I wait to order translation?

Wait until your good standing certificate has been issued and you are ready to send your HCPC application. The translation itself never expires. But if the certificate expires, you may need a new certificate and a new translation. Plan your dates so that you apply while the certificate is still valid.

I qualified in a country where social work is not a regulated profession. How does this affect my HCPC application?

If your country does not regulate social work, you cannot get a professional registration certificate or a good standing letter. Instead, you can send a letter from your employer or from a university. It must confirm your qualifications and your work history. These letters need a certified translation if they are not in English. The HCPC's international team looks at each case on its own.
