Accountant Qualification Translation UK: ACCA, ICAEW & CIMA

Trained abroad and want UK membership of ACCA, ICAEW, or CIMA? You must send certified translations of your qualifications and transcripts. This guide explains what each body asks for and how to make sure your translations are accepted.

Accountancy is not a legally regulated profession in the UK, unlike medicine or social work. But membership of a professional body (ACCA, ICAEW, CIMA, CIPFA) is key for career growth and for certain roles. Many overseas-trained accountants also need a Skilled Worker visa. The visa needs its own set of certified translations. This guide covers both.

Professional Body vs Visa: Two Different Translation Requirements

Professional body applications need certified translations of your academic qualifications and transcripts. UK visa applications need certified translations of your personal identity documents. The two lists overlap a little, but they are not the same. If a document appears on both lists, one certified translation may work for both — ask your immigration adviser.

By Professional Body: What Needs Translation

ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants)

ACCA is a global body with members in 181 countries. If you qualified overseas and want ACCA membership or exemptions from ACCA papers, these documents may need translation:

Documents to Translate for ACCA

  • Undergraduate degree certificate and transcript — Required for exemption assessment; must show accounting/finance modules
  • Professional accounting qualification certificate — If you hold a local accounting qualification ACCA recognises for exemptions
  • Practical experience record — Letters from employers confirming accounting experience; must be translated if not in English
  • Identity documents — Passport (usually in English) is preferred but if only local ID is available, translation is needed

ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales)

ICAEW has reciprocal membership deals with several overseas bodies (AICPA, CPA Canada, Chartered Accountants ANZ, SAICA, and others). Under these deals, you may need few translations if your qualification is already in English. If you apply directly without a reciprocal deal, you need certified translations of:

DocumentICAEW RequirementTranslation Needed?
Accounting degree certificateEvidence of education levelYes, if not in English
Academic transcriptsModule content verificationYes, if not in English
Professional registration certificateProof of overseas registrationYes, if not in English
Employer reference lettersExperience verificationYes, if not in English

CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants)

CIMA has a large international membership. It offers exemptions for certain overseas accounting qualifications. The CIMA Global Assessment checks your existing qualifications and lists the CIMA papers you may skip. For the assessment, you need certified translations of academic certificates and transcripts if they are not in English.

CIMA Global Assessment: Accurate Transcript Translation Is Critical

CIMA uses your module-level transcript to compare subjects one by one. If your transcript is mistranslated — above all module names or credit hours — your exemption result may be wrong. Make sure your translator knows both the language and the subject. Then check the translated module names against your course syllabi.

Skilled Worker Visa for Accountants

Many overseas accountants apply for the Skilled Worker visa to work in the UK. Accounting roles qualify for the Skilled Worker route (SOC codes 2421-2423 — chartered and certified accountants, management accountants, and tax advisers). For the visa, you need certified translations of:

  • Birth certificate (personal identity)
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Overseas qualifications relied upon for the visa (degree certificate) — may overlap with professional body documents

Frequently Asked Questions

My accounting degree is from an ACCA-accredited institution. Do I still need transcripts translated?

ACCA-accredited programmes give automatic exemptions for certain papers. But ACCA still needs proof of your award and the exact modules you completed. If your degree certificate and transcript are not in English, they must be certified translated — even for an accredited programme. The translation proves you finished the accredited programme and received the award.

I have the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) qualification from the US. Do I need translation for ICAEW?

The ICAEW has a reciprocal membership deal with AICPA (the CPA body). If you hold a CPA licence, you can apply under this mutual recognition agreement. Your CPA certificate and transcript are in English, so no translation is needed. You will need to confirm your CPA standing through AICPA. Contact ICAEW's international admissions team for the current process.

My degree transcript is in Chinese. How detailed should the translation be?

Transcripts must be translated in full — every module name, grade, and credit. For Chinese accounting programmes, module names like 财务会计 (Financial Accounting), 管理会计 (Management Accounting), and 审计学 (Auditing) must use the standard English terms. For transcripts, pick a translator who knows accounting as well as the language.
