Psychologist & Counsellor Registration Translation UK

Overseas-trained psychologists and counsellors who want to work in the UK must deal with HCPC, BPS, BACP, and UKCP registration rules. This guide covers which documents need certified translation, and how psychology and counselling are regulated differently.

Psychology and counselling are regulated differently in the UK. That difference decides which organisation you register with and which translated documents you need. Learn how the system works before you gather your papers. It will save you time and money.

The Key Distinction: Psychology vs Counselling Regulation

Practitioner psychologists (clinical, forensic, educational, health, occupational, sport and exercise, and counselling psychologists) must by law register with the HCPC to use protected titles in the UK. Counsellors and psychotherapists are not regulated by law at present. Joining BACP or UKCP is voluntary, but employers and the NHS expect it.

HCPC Registration: Documents Needing Translation

HCPC regulates practitioner psychologists under the Health Professions Order 2001. The protected titles include Clinical Psychologist, Forensic Psychologist, Educational Psychologist, Health Psychologist, Occupational Psychologist, Sport and Exercise Psychologist, and Counselling Psychologist. To use these titles in the UK, you must register with HCPC.

If you trained overseas, HCPC needs the documents below, all in English. Anything in another language must come with a certified translation:

Psychology Degree Certificate

Your main qualification. It must show the course title, the awarding institution, the level, and the date of award. The degree title must match a recognised psychology programme.

Academic Transcript

This shows every module you studied, your marks, and how the degree was structured. HCPC uses it to check your training against UK psychology standards of proficiency.

Supervised Practice Hours Documentation

Proof of your supervised clinical or applied practice hours: letters from supervisors, training logs, or employer letters. Translate them if they are not in English.

Overseas Registration or Licence

Proof that you are (or were) registered or licensed to work as a psychologist in the country where you qualified. Translate it if it is not in English.

Good Standing Letter

This comes from your professional regulator. It confirms there are no fitness to practise concerns, sanctions, or investigations. It must be recent (usually within 3–6 months). Translate it if it is not in English.

CPD Records

HCPC may ask for your continuing professional development records, especially if it runs a full competence assessment. Translate certificates and records from CPD providers if they are not in English.

BPS Membership (British Psychological Society)

The British Psychological Society (BPS) is the professional membership body for psychology in the UK. You do not need BPS membership by law to work as a psychologist. But it carries weight, and NHS and private employers often expect it. BPS Graduate Membership and Chartered Psychologist status (CPsychol) are widely recognised. Overseas psychologists can apply to join, and you may need translated qualification documents for the assessment.

BACP and UKCP: Counselling and Psychotherapy Registration

The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) are professional membership bodies for counsellors and psychotherapists. Joining is voluntary. Even so, NHS providers and large counselling employers usually ask for BACP accreditation. If you trained overseas and want BACP or UKCP membership, your training qualifications must be assessed. Translated documents are a normal part of that.

HCPC Adaptation Programme

If HCPC decides your overseas psychology qualification does not fully meet UK standards, you may have to complete an adaptation programme. That means a period of supervised practice or extra training in the UK. It lets you show that you work to UK standards. Documents from this period, such as supervisor reports and assessment records, may need to be in English.

Frequently Asked Questions

I trained as a counsellor overseas — do I need HCPC registration?

Only if you plan to use the protected title "Counselling Psychologist." Counsellors and psychotherapists who do not use HCPC-protected titles do not have to register with HCPC. For most counsellors, BACP or UKCP membership is the right route. But if your overseas qualification was at doctoral level or higher in counselling psychology, you may be able to register with HCPC as a practitioner psychologist.

Do HCPC accept translations from any certified translator?

HCPC accepts certified translations that come with a signed statement from the translator. The statement must confirm that the translator can work between the two languages, and that the translation is accurate and complete. HCPC does not require the translator to belong to a particular body. Our translations include a full certification statement that meets HCPC rules.
