Overseas Employment History Translation for UK Visa

ILR employment evidence, Skilled Worker switching and Global Talent portfolios all need your foreign-language work documents in certified English. Here is what you need, by document type and by country.

Several UK visa routes ask you to prove a steady work history. If part of that history is a job outside the UK, the payslips, employment certificates, social insurance records and tax papers are rarely in English. UKVI needs a certified translation of every non-English document, and overseas work evidence is no exception.

When Overseas Employment History Is Required

ILR applications need proof of continuous lawful residence, and often proof of continuous employment across the qualifying period. If you worked abroad for any part of that time — for example, working remotely for an overseas employer while on a UK visa — those documents must be translated. Skilled Worker salary switching and Global Talent portfolios can need foreign-language work evidence too.

Types of Overseas Employment Documents and Their Translations

Monthly Payslips

Your main proof of ongoing work and pay. Translate each payslip in the period on its own. The dates, gross pay, net pay, employer name and deductions must all be given exactly.

Employment Certificate / Letter

A formal letter from your employer confirming your dates, job title and salary. You often need one when you no longer have payslips for older jobs.

Social Insurance / National Insurance Equivalent

Records of your social contributions, such as the French relevé de carrière, the German Rentenversicherungsverlauf or the Spanish vida laboral. They show an official work history held by the state and back up your payslips.

Annual Tax Document (P60 Equivalent)

End-of-year tax statements showing your total income for each year. They back up your monthly payslips and salary certificates.

Continuous Employment for ILR: Gaps and Explanations

ILR applicants must show continuous lawful residence across the qualifying period. Some routes also ask for employment evidence, but there is no general requirement of unbroken employment. You have to explain any gaps. If a gap was a job abroad that later ended, your translated overseas employment certificate and payslips set out the timeline.

Here are the situations where ILR applicants most often need this:

  • Remote worker employed by a foreign company: if you hold a Skilled Worker visa and also have a second contract with an overseas employer, translate those payslips to show the income and where it came from.
  • Pre-UK employment history for Global Talent: the endorsing body wants proof of senior roles before you came to the UK. Foreign employment contracts and reference letters must be translated.
  • Employment abroad during a long absence: if you were away for a long spell, such as maternity leave with an overseas employer, translated payslips or employer letters explain the absence and show your work continued.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have 5 years of French payslips for my ILR application. Do all 60 payslips need to be translated?

UKVI guidance says every non-English document you send must have a certified translation. So if you send all 60 payslips, all 60 need translating. It is worth asking your immigration solicitor whether a sample of payslips would do instead, alongside certified translations of your annual tax documents (avis d’imposition) and a social insurance statement.

My Indian Form 16 is in English but references deductions in Hindi. Does it need translation?

If the form is mostly English with only a few Hindi labels, a certified part translation or a translator’s note explaining the Hindi terms may be enough. But if any real section is in Hindi — the deduction breakdown, for example — those sections need a full certified translation so UKVI can judge your income.
