Myanmar Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026
Myanmar uses a distinctive round script from the Brahmic family that requires specialist translators. The household registration list (အိမ်ထောင်စုစာရင်း) is a critical document for many applications. The 2021 military coup has significantly disrupted civil services.
Myanmar (formerly Burma) has a growing community in the United Kingdom. It grew much larger after the February 2021 military coup. Myanmar nationals apply for many types of UK visa. These include student visas, skilled worker visas, spouse visas and asylum-related leave to remain. Myanmar civil documents are written in Burmese, using the Burmese/Myanmar script. This is a distinctive round script from the Brahmic family. Every one of these documents needs a certified English translation for UKVI.
Myanmar is NOT in the Apostille Convention
Myanmar has not joined the Hague Apostille Convention. So Myanmar documents for a UK visa must go through the legalisation chain. First they go to the Myanmar Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or to the General Administration Department for civil documents. Then they go to the UK Embassy in Yangon. Since the 2021 coup, UK guidance on dealing with Myanmar government bodies has changed. Check the latest FCDO advice before you start legalisation.

The Household Registration List (အိမ်ထောင်စုစာရင်း)
The household registration list is one of the most important documents in the Myanmar civil system. It is also one of the documents most often asked for in UK visa applications from Myanmar. In most countries, birth and marriage certificates are the main civil documents. Myanmar works differently. Its household registration system lists every family member living at one address in a single booklet.
What the Household Registration List Contains
- Full names of all household members (in Burmese script)
- Relationships between household members (parent, child, spouse)
- Dates of birth, NRC numbers, and nationality of each member
- Address details and administrative ward information
- Official stamps and signatures of the ward/township administrator
For UK visa applications, the household registration list can prove family links, identity and nationality. It is especially useful for a spouse visa when it shows both spouses in the same household.
The NRC: National Registration Card (နိုင်ငံသားစိစစ်ရေးကတ်ပြား)
The National Registration Card (NRC) is Myanmar's national identity document. Its coding system is unlike any other. Each NRC carries a code showing the holder's state or division, township and citizenship class. That citizenship class matters politically. Myanmar recognises "full citizens" (people descended from residents before 1823), "associate citizens," and "naturalised citizens" — categories set up by the 1982 Citizenship Law.
The NRC number follows a set format: State/Division Code / Township Code (N) Classification Code, then a 6-digit number. An example is 12/OKHANA(N)123456. Your certified translator will translate the number and explain how it is built up.
The 2021 Military Coup and Civil Services Disruption
The February 2021 military coup has badly disrupted civil services across Myanmar. The General Administration Department (GAD) runs household registration and issues many civil documents. It was placed under military control. Many civil servants joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) and stopped working for the military administration. As a result, documents are now hard to get in many areas.
Limited Document Access
Many Myanmar nationals who have been abroad since 2021 cannot renew a passport or get civil documents. The Myanmar Embassy in London is now run by the military government, and people who oppose the coup do not recognise it. The National Unity Government (NUG), the civilian government in exile, cannot issue passports or legal documents.
UKVI's Approach
UKVI knows Myanmar civil services have been disrupted since 2021, and it looks at each case on its own facts. If you cannot get documents from the Myanmar authorities, UKVI may accept other proof of identity and family links. Check the latest UKVI guidance or speak to an immigration adviser.
Ethnic Minority Documentation Challenges
Myanmar has over 135 officially recognised ethnic groups. Many of these minorities have long struggled to get civil documents from the central administration. They include the Karen, Shan, Kachin, Chin, Mon and Rakhine. The Rohingya face the worst problems of all. They are a Muslim minority, mostly from Rakhine State, and the 1982 Citizenship Law denies them citizenship.
Rohingya Statelessness
Under Myanmar law the Rohingya are stateless, so they do not get NRC cards. Many hold no formal Myanmar civil documents at all. Their main proof is often UNHCR refugee papers or birth certificates issued in Bangladesh, as many Rohingya lived in the Cox's Bazar camps. If those papers are in Bengali or another language, they need certified translation.
Other Ethnic Minorities
Karen, Shan and other ethnic minorities may hold documents in their own language or in Burmese. It depends on which authority issued them. Papers from ethnic resistance groups or churches may need a statutory declaration to back them up.

Frequently Asked Questions
I cannot obtain documents from Myanmar since the 2021 coup. What should I do for my UK visa application?
If the situation since the coup means you cannot get documents from the Myanmar authorities, explain this in a detailed covering letter with your visa application. UKVI can choose to accept other evidence. That might be documents issued to you earlier, papers from international organisations, witness statements, or documents issued by Myanmar embassies or consulates before the coup. It is well worth speaking to an immigration solicitor who knows Myanmar cases.
My household registration list is very long and covers the whole family. Do I need to translate all of it?
Translate the pages that matter for your visa application. For a spouse visa, translate the pages showing your name and your spouse's name. Add the cover page and any pages with official stamps. If you are proving a parent-child link, translate the pages that show you and your parent. Your certified translator can advise on which pages to include. Always include the cover and any pages that authenticate the booklet.
