Long Residence ILR Translation UK: 10-Year Route Guide

The 10-year long residence ILR route (now under Appendix Long Residence) is a big application. UKVI looks at your whole decade in the UK. Papers built up over 10 years often come in several languages — and every one needs a certified translation.

The long residence ILR route lets you apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain after 10 continuous lawful years in the UK. It moved from paragraph 276B to Appendix Long Residence in April 2024. Other ILR routes (Skilled Worker, spouse visa) look at one visa only. This route asks for full proof of 10 years of lawful, unbroken residence. For many people, that means papers from several countries, in several languages, over many years.

Why Translation Volume is Higher for Long Residence ILR

A lot changes in 10 years: marriages, divorces, children born abroad, name changes, qualifications from overseas colleges. Each event creates paperwork. If that paperwork is in another language, every page needs a certified translation. Long residence ILR often needs more translation than any other visa route.

Documents Requiring Translation for Long Residence ILR

Identity and Personal Status Documents

Core Personal Documents (Always Translate)

  • Birth certificate — The base proof of who you are; needs a certified translation if it is not in English
  • Marriage certificate(s) — Any marriage during the 10 years must be translated
  • Divorce certificate(s) — If you divorced during the 10 years (this shows your current marital status)
  • Children's birth certificates — If adding child dependants, or if children were born abroad during the 10 years
  • Name change documents — If your name has changed through marriage or deed poll during the 10 years

Continuous Residence Evidence

UKVI needs proof that you lived in the UK lawfully, without a break, for the full 10 years. Your time away must stay within the limits (currently, no single absence of more than 6 months, and no more than 18 months' absence in total across the 10 years). Proof of residence that may need translation includes:

Evidence TypeTranslation Needed?Notes
Foreign employer letters / contractsYesIf you worked abroad during your UK residence
Foreign bank statementsYesIf you use them to show your finances or your ties
Foreign tax returns / assessmentsYesIf you rely on them for any part of the 10 years
Foreign qualifications / diplomasSometimesIf you used them in an earlier visa application, or as English language proof
Criminal record certificates from abroadYesIf you spent time living in another country during the 10 years

The Continuous Absence Test and Travel Evidence

You must give a detailed travel history. UKVI checks your passport stamps and may ask for more proof about time spent abroad. If you worked abroad during an absence and hold letters from a foreign employer, those need certified translation to show why you were away and for how long.

The 180-Day Rule: When Absences Require Explanation

One absence of more than 180 days in a row can break your continuous residence, unless you have strong or compassionate reasons. If that happened to you, and your proof is in another language (hospital records, family emergency papers, employer letters), get it certified translated and send it with your application.

Good Character Requirement

Every ILR applicant must meet the good character requirement. If you spent time in another country during the 10 years, you may need a police certificate from there. Police certificates in another language need certified translation. Certificates are usually needed for:

  • Countries where you spent more than 12 months during the 10-year period
  • Countries of your nationality if you spent significant time there
  • Countries where you previously held residence permits

Frequently Asked Questions

I submitted translated documents for previous visa applications. Do I need to re-translate them for ILR?

UKVI keeps documents you sent before. But for a big application like long residence ILR, caseworkers usually want a fresh, complete bundle. If your old translations are more than 5 years old, or in a different format, it is safer to get new ones. The source document itself does not change, of course — a birth certificate stays the same.

I cannot get police certificates from a country I lived in briefly during my 10 years. What do I do?

Some countries do not issue police certificates to foreign nationals, or the certificate is out of reach for another reason. In that case, add a covering letter that explains why. UKVI guidance accepts that some countries do not offer this service. Where a country does issue certificates, you must get them certified translated.

My 10 years included time on the Tier 4 student route. Do my academic qualifications need translating?

If your foreign qualifications were already translated and accepted for your student visa, you usually don't need to translate them again. The long residence ILR application is mainly about proving 10 lawful, unbroken years in the UK — qualifications matter less here, unless UKVI asks for them.
