Korean Birth Certificate Translation for UK Visa

South Korea does not issue separate birth certificates the way Western countries do. For UK visa applications, the standard document is the 가족관계증명서 (Family Relations Certificate) — a register-style document issued through the Korean court registry system, which administers the Family Relations Registration System. Once you understand the system, it is easy to send the right document.

Korean nationals applying for UK visas often need certified translations of their Korean civil documents. This covers spouse visas, student visas, and work routes. The Korean family register system works differently from most Western systems. Knowing which document UKVI wants can save you a lot of time and effort.

The 가족관계증명서 Is Korea's Birth Proof

In 2008, South Korea scrapped the old Hoju (戶主) household registry and brought in the Family Relations Registration System. The 가족관계증명서 (Family Relations Certificate) shows your birth details and how you are related to your parents, siblings, and spouse. For Korean applicants, this is the main document UKVI accepts as proof of date of birth and parentage.

Types of Korean Family Relations Certificates

기본증명서 (Basic Certificate)

Shows your own basic details: name, date of birth, registration number, and any change of name or status. It does not show family relationships.

가족관계증명서 (Family Relations Certificate)

Shows how you are related to your parents and children. This is the document visa applications ask for most, because it proves your birth details and who your parents are.

혼인관계증명서 (Marriage Relations Certificate)

Shows your link to your spouse. Use it with the Family Relations Certificate to prove your marriage for a UK spouse visa.

상세 (Detailed) vs 일반 (General) Format

Every certificate comes in two formats. General shows your current details. Detailed also shows past changes, such as earlier marriages, divorces, and name changes. UKVI may ask for the Detailed version in harder cases.

Korean Name Order and Romanisation

Korean names put the family name first and the given name second, like other East Asian names. In 김민준 (Kim Minjun), 김 (Kim) is the family name and 민준 (Minjun) is the given name. The certified translation shows it in English order, as Minjun Kim, with a note that the original puts the family name first.

Korean Romanisation and Name Discrepancies

  • The surname 이 (Lee/Yi/Rhee/Yi): This very common surname can be written as Lee, Yi, Rhee, Ee, or Ni, depending on the system used. Your passport may spell it differently from your family register. Your translator will note both spellings.
  • 김 (Kim/Gim): Revised Romanisation, official since 2000, writes 김 as Gim. But most Korean passports use Kim by personal choice, both before and after 2000. Both spellings are correct.
  • 박 (Park/Bak/Pak): This one varies too. Revised Romanisation gives Bak, but most people choose Park.
  • Given name spacing: A two-syllable Korean given name may be written as one word (Minjun), with a hyphen (Min-jun), or as two words (Min Jun). They are all the same name.

Obtaining Korean Documents from Abroad

If you are in the UK and need Korean civil documents, you have several options:

  • Korean Government24 (정부24) portal: If you have a valid Korean ID, you can download official electronic copies of your family register documents from this government portal
  • Korean Embassy in London: The Embassy of Korea offers limited help with getting civil documents
  • Ask a family member in Korea: A relative can request the documents for you at any local government office (주민센터) in Korea
  • Use a Korean administrative agent: Approved agents in Korea can get the documents if you give them power of attorney

Frequently Asked Questions

My Korean family register uses hanja (Chinese characters) for my name. How will this be translated?

Older Korean documents, and some registrations, show hanja (한자) next to the Hangul. Your translator will note the Hangul, the hanja, and the English spelling of your name. They use the Revised Romanisation standard by default. If your passport uses a different system, they match your passport spelling instead.

Do I need the Detailed (상세) or General (일반) version of my certificate?

For most UK visa applications, the General version of the 가족관계증명서 is enough. Choose the Detailed version if you have had an earlier marriage or a name change, or if UKVI asks for your full history. If in doubt, order the Detailed version — it holds everything in the General version, plus the past records.
