Italian Document Translation for UK Visa Applications
Complete 2026 guide for Italian nationals: Translate certificati for UK visas — Italy, San Marino, and Vatican City documents covered.
Do Italian Nationals Need Certified Document Translation?
Yes. If you are Italian and you apply for a UK visa, you must give certified English translations of any document that is not already in English. That covers the certificato di nascita, certificato di matrimonio, diplomi universitari, certificati penali, and every other Italian-language document you send to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). Italy is an EU member state, but since the UK left the EU, post-Brexit rules apply: all Italian documents must be accompanied by a certified translation for UK visa applications.
UKVI Requirement for Italian Documents
UK Visas and Immigration needs a certified translation with every document that is not in English or Welsh. Italian documents from Italy, San Marino, and Vatican City all need a signed translator statement confirming the translation is accurate. UKVI will not accept machine translations or uncertified ones.
Italian Translation Pricing — 2026
Italian document translation costs £17.99 per page at the standard rate. Italian uses the Latin alphabet and is a standard-complexity language. That makes it one of the cheapest translations for a UK visa. Upload your documents for an instant quote.
Common Italian Documents Requiring Translation
Italian nationals usually need these documents translated for a UK visa:
Certificato di Nascita
Italian birth certificates from Comune (town hall). Essential for all UK visa types.
Certificato di Matrimonio
Italian marriage certificates for spouse and family visa applications.
Diploma / Laurea
Italian university degrees and academic transcripts for a Skilled Worker visa.
Certificato Penale / Casellario Giudiziale
Italian criminal record certificate for ILR and settlement applications.
Atto di Divorzio / Sentenza di Divorzio
Italian divorce decrees from the Tribunale. You need these for a spouse visa if you were married before.
Estratto dell'Atto di Nascita
A longer birth extract that names your parents. Ancestry and settlement visas often ask for it.
Documents from Italy, San Marino & Vatican City
Most Italian-language documents come from Italy. But UKVI also sees documents from the other Italian-speaking states. Here is how they differ:
Italy (Repubblica Italiana)
- Issued by the Comune (municipal registry)
- Birth: Certificato di Nascita
- Marriage: Certificato di Matrimonio
- Police: Casellario Giudiziale
- Apostille from Prefettura
- Stato Civile records for historical documents
San Marino (Repubblica di San Marino)
- Issued by the Ufficio di Stato Civile
- Very similar format to Italian documents
- Apostille available from Secretary of State
- Less common but fully accepted by UKVI
- Official language: Italian
Vatican City (Città del Vaticano)
- Issued by the Governorate of Vatican City
- Extremely rare in UK visa applications
- Also uses Italian as official language
- Documents may reference canon law
- Apostille through Holy See Secretariat
Italian Translation Challenges
Italian documents raise a few problems. You need a translator who knows Italian official language well:
Formal Administrative Language
Italian civil documents use very formal, old-fashioned wording, such as “il sottoscritto ufficiale di stato civile”. That needs an expert. A word-for-word version sounds odd and can make a UKVI caseworker doubt it.
Name Formatting Differences
Italian names often have double surnames and follow customs that differ from UK ones. Your translator must keep the exact spelling and never “anglicise” a name, even when it looks unusual.
Regional Document Variations
Documents from some regions, such as Alto Adige/South Tyrol, carry German or Ladin text next to the Italian. These bilingual documents need care, so that every word gets translated.
Historical Document Formats
Italian documents from before the 1970s used a different layout and different words. Papers from the Kingdom of Italy or the early Republic may use old titles, old place names, or offices that no longer exist. Getting these right takes research.
Notarial and Apostille Text
Italian notarised documents and apostilles carry standard legal wording. That wording must go into the translation too. If certification text or stamps are missing, UKVI may say the translation is incomplete.
Academic Grading Systems
Italian universities mark out of 110, and add “lode” for distinction. The UK uses 1st and 2:1 instead. Italian grades need clear context so a Skilled Worker visa assessor can judge your qualification.
Step-by-Step Translation Process
Obtain Your Italian Documents from the Comune
Ask your local Comune (council) or the Consolato Italiano in the UK for certified copies. For old records, contact the Archivio di Stato. You need official copies, because photocopies are not accepted. If your visa type needs an apostille, ask the Prefettura for it at the same time.
Upload Your Documents for an Instant Quote
Scan or photograph your Italian documents clearly, then upload them. Our system spots Italian on its own and works out the price at £17.99 per page. You see the total before you pay, and there are no hidden fees. You can upload several documents in one order.
Professional Italian-English Translation
Our translators know Italian official and legal language well. They translate your certificati accurately. Every word on the page goes in, including stamps, headers, official seals, and notes. We keep the same layout as the original.
Quality Review and UKVI Certification
We check every translation for accuracy, and to make sure nothing is missing. Then we add a certification statement, signed by the translator. It confirms the translation is accurate and complete, and it meets UKVI rules for every UK visa type.
Receive Your Certified Translation by Email
We email your UKVI-ready certified translation as a PDF within 24 hours of payment. The PDF holds the original document and the certified English translation. Just download it, print it, and send it with your visa application.

Italy's Comune Civil Registry System
Italian civil documents come from local government, not one central office. Once you know how that works, it is easier to get the right document before translation. It also explains why Italian papers look so different from one city to the next.
The Comune (Municipality)
Every Italian citizen is registered with a local Comune (town hall). The Comune keeps the civil registry (Registro di Stato Civile). It issues birth, marriage, and death certificates, plus family status documents. You apply to the Comune where the event happened, or where the person is registered. Italy has over 7,900 Comuni, and each one keeps its own records.
Do you need a document from your birth Comune but live elsewhere in Italy or abroad? You can ask by post, online, or through someone acting for you. It takes 1 to 4 weeks, depending on the Comune.
The Prefettura (Prefecture)
The Prefettura is the local office of the Italian central government. Two of its jobs matter for UK visa applicants:
- Apostille: Italy issues apostilles (Hague Convention certifications) through the Prefettura. If your visa needs an apostilled Italian document, apply to the Prefettura in the province that issued the document.
- Legalisation: For countries outside the Hague Convention, the Prefettura can legalise documents for use abroad.
Note: most UK visa types do not need an apostille on Italian documents. A certified translation on its own is usually enough.
Obtaining Documents from the UK via Italian Consulate
Do you live in the UK and appear on AIRE (Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all'Estero — the register of Italians abroad)? Then you can ask the Italian Consulate or Embassy in the UK for your civil documents.
- The Consolato Generale d'Italia in Londra covers England, Wales, and Northern Ireland
- The Consolato d'Italia in Edimburgo covers Scotland
- If you are on AIRE, you can ask the Consulate for certificati without contacting Italy
- Allow 2–6 weeks for consular processing
The ANPR Online System
Italy has built a national digital civil registry called ANPR (Anagrafe Nazionale della Popolazione Residente). Do you have a SPID (digital identity) or a CIE (electronic ID card)? Then you can download certified civil certificates from the ANPR portal (anagrafenazionale.interno.gov.it), including:
- Certificato di nascita (birth certificate)
- Certificato di matrimonio (marriage certificate)
- Certificato di residenza (residency certificate)
- Stato di famiglia (family status certificate)
ANPR documents carry a digital stamp and are fully official. We can translate them for your UK visa.
Tip: Which Italian Document Should You Request?
For a UK visa, always ask for the estratto dell'atto di nascita (full birth extract), not the shorter certificato di nascita. The full extract names your parents and gives more detail, so UKVI prefers it for checking identity. Ask for the estratto dell'atto di matrimonio for the same reason.
When you ask, say the document is for “uso estero” (for foreign use). That way you get it in the right format to send abroad.
Which UK Visa Types Require Italian Document Translation?
Italian nationals use more UK visa routes than most other nationalities. Post-Brexit changes to the EU Settlement Scheme are the main reason. Here are the four routes that need Italian document translation most often:
EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) — Late Applications & Family Permits
Some Italian nationals missed the June 2021 EUSS deadline. Others are family members joining an EUSS holder in the UK. Both groups still have to apply, and both need translated Italian documents. This matters most if you are joining settled family, or applying from Italy for an EUSS family permit.
- → Certificato di matrimonio (to prove relationship to settled person)
- → Certificato di nascita (for dependent children)
- → Proof of Italian nationality and identity
Skilled Worker Visa
Since Brexit, Italian professionals applying for a Skilled Worker visa must get their qualifications translated. Employers usually ask for Italian degrees (laurea triennale, laurea magistrale) and professional certificates. The translation must also show Italian marks correctly, such as voti in trentesimi and 110/110 con lode.
- → Laurea / diploma di laurea (degree certificate)
- → Libretto universitario or transcript
- → Professional licences (e.g., medical, legal, engineering)
Spouse & Family Visa (UK Nationals Sponsoring Italian Partners)
Are you a UK national sponsoring an Italian partner or spouse for a family visa? You must send certified translations of your partner's Italian civil documents. Since Brexit, Italian nationals no longer have EU free movement rights, so they use the standard family visa route.
- → Certificato di matrimonio or proof of civil partnership
- → Certificato di nascita of the Italian applicant
- → Sentenza di divorzio (if previously married)
Settlement (ILR) & British Citizenship
Have you held pre-settled or settled status under EUSS, or lived in the UK on another visa? You may be able to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain or British citizenship. These applications often need translated Italian documents as identity and history evidence. The certificato penale (criminal record certificate) from Italy comes up most often.
- → Casellario giudiziale (Italian criminal record certificate)
- → Certificato di nascita and stato di famiglia
- → Historical Italian documents for long-term UK residents
UKVI Translation Requirements Checklist for Italian Documents
- Every document you send to UKVI that is not in English or Welsh needs a certified translation
- A qualified translator must sign it and add a statement of accuracy
- Every word on the page must be translated — stamps, headers, and official notes included
- Send the original Italian document AND the certified English translation together
- Do not use machine translation or online tools — UKVI will not accept them
- Some visa types need an apostille on Italian documents — check the rules for your visa
Common Rejection Reasons for Italian Document Translations
Incomplete Translation of Stamps and Seals
Italian documents often carry official stamps with text on them. That text must go into the translation. If it is left out, UKVI may treat the translation as incomplete and refuse the application.
Missing Certification Statement
The translator must sign a statement that confirms the translation is accurate and sets out their qualifications. Without it, UKVI will not accept the translation. This is the most common reason translations are rejected.
Using Google Translate or Machine Translation
Caseworkers spot machine-translated documents easily. UKVI wants a translation certified by a person. Using online tools can get you refused, even for a simple document.
Submitting Only the Translation Without the Original
Always send the original Italian document and the certified English translation together. If you send only the translation, UKVI may ignore that evidence.
Incorrect Name Transliteration
If the name in the translation does not match your passport exactly, UKVI will query it. Translators must never anglicise an Italian name or change its spelling. That includes accented letters.

Frequently Asked Questions — Italian Document Translation
Do I need to apostille Italian documents before translating them for a UK visa?
It depends on your visa type. Some routes need apostilled documents. For others, the certified translation on its own is enough. Italy has signed the Hague Apostille Convention, so you can get an apostille from the Prefettura. We can translate your documents with or without one, and the translation is accepted either way. Check the rules for your visa, or ask an immigration solicitor.
My Italian birth certificate is very old. Can it still be translated?
Yes. We often translate old Italian documents, including ones from the early 20th century. They may use old-fashioned official language or handwriting, but our translators know these formats well. Allow a little extra time for very old papers. If the document is in poor condition, send the clearest scan you can.
I have documents from South Tyrol / Alto Adige in both Italian and German. Which do you translate?
South Tyrol (Alto Adige) documents are often in Italian and German. We translate both languages into English, so nothing is left out. Please tell us when you upload if your document is bilingual. Italian and German are both standard-rate languages at £17.99 per page.
How do I obtain a certificato di nascita if I am already in the UK?
You can ask the Italian Consulate or Embassy in the UK. The Consolato Generale d'Italia in London deals with citizens on the AIRE register (the register of Italians abroad). It usually takes 2–4 weeks. You can also ask the Comune in Italy direct, either online through the government portal (anagrafenazionale.interno.gov.it) or through someone acting for you.
Can I use an Italian translation for multiple UK visa applications?
Yes. Certified translations do not expire. You can use a certified translation of your certificato di nascita or certificato di matrimonio for your first visa, then again for extensions, ILR, and citizenship. Keep both a digital and a paper copy of every certified translation.
What is the difference between a certificato di nascita and an estratto dell'atto di nascita?
A certificato di nascita is the short version. It shows your name, date of birth, and place of birth. An estratto dell'atto di nascita is the full extract from the civil register. It also names your parents, gives their jobs, and lists witnesses. UKVI usually prefers the estratto, because it confirms more about your identity. We can translate either one.
