Indian Documents Translation UK Visa: 2026 Complete Guide
India sends more visa applications to the UK than any other country, on routes from Skilled Worker to Spouse to Student. India has 22 scheduled languages and dozens of regional scripts, so the first job is always to name the exact source language. This guide walks through the civil, academic and financial documents UKVI asks for.

MEA Apostille — Required Before Translation
India is a Hague Convention member. Civil documents should be apostilled at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), New Delhi, before you have them translated into English. You can do this online through the MEA portal, or through an authorised agent. The apostille itself must be translated too, as part of the document.
Source Language by Region
India has 22 scheduled languages. Your translator must know the exact source language: a Hindi translator cannot handle a Tamil document. The certification should name that language, not just say "Indian languages".
| Region | Primary Language | Script |
|---|---|---|
| North (UP, MP, Delhi, Bihar) | Hindi | Devanagari |
| Punjab / Haryana | Punjabi / Hindi | Gurmukhi / Devanagari |
| West Bengal | Bengali | Bengali script |
| Gujarat | Gujarati | Gujarati script |
| Maharashtra | Marathi | Devanagari |
| Tamil Nadu | Tamil | Tamil script |
| Karnataka | Kannada | Kannada script |
| Andhra / Telangana | Telugu | Telugu script |
| Kerala | Malayalam | Malayalam script |
Marriage Certificate Variations
- Hindu Marriage Act 1955 — most common registration type
- Special Marriage Act 1954 — civil / inter-faith marriages
- Muslim Marriage (Nikahnama) — registered under state Muslim marriage act
- Christian Marriage — Indian Christian Marriage Act 1872
- Anand Marriage Act — Sikh marriages
- Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act 1936 — Parsi community
Tatkal Birth Certificates
If your birth was never registered (common for rural births before 2000), you can register it late (Tatkal) with a court order. UKVI accepts these, but it checks them closely, so your translator must render the court wording exactly.
Academic Documents
- 10th (SSC) / 12th (HSC) — state board certificates
- Bachelor degree & provisional certificate — for Skilled Worker, HPI
- Master / PhD — often with multi-part mark sheets
- Professional degrees (CA, CMA, CS) — ICAI, ICMAI, ICSI issuance
- Consolidated mark sheet — semester-wise transcript
- Migration certificate — required by some universities
- Medium of Instruction letter — for English language exemption
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to translate an Indian birth certificate already in English?
If the certificate is all in English with no regional-language stamps, usually no. But if it carries a Hindi municipal seal or any regional text, it is safest to get a certified translation statement that covers it.
Can Indian embassy-issued affidavits replace a birth certificate?
Not on their own. UKVI prefers the original birth certificate, or a late registration certificate, with a translation. An affidavit can support that, but it rarely replaces it.
How long does MEA apostille take?
Online apostille (e-Sanad) usually takes 3–5 working days. Handing documents in at a regional MEA centre can take 1–2 weeks, depending on how busy they are.
My documents are from pre-1947 pre-partition areas. What do I do?
These are rare, but they do come up. You need a translator who specialises in historical documents. UKVI looks at each case on its own, and applicants often send supporting affidavits with the translation.
