High Potential Individual Visa Translation UK: 2026 Guide
The HPI visa lets graduates of top-50 global universities come to the UK without a job offer or sponsor. No employer vouches for you, so UKVI checks your degree evidence very closely. Every transcript, certificate, and Ecctis verification document that is not in English needs a certified translation. This guide covers exactly what you need.
Who Qualifies for the HPI Visa?
You qualify if you graduated in the last 5 years from a university on the UK's Global Universities List. The list is drawn from rankings like QS, THE, and the Academic Ranking of World Universities. Your university must have been on it in the year you graduated. The list usually holds about 40 universities a year. Most are in the US and East Asia, with a few in Europe and Australia.
Key Advantage: No Sponsor Required
Unlike the Skilled Worker visa, HPI lets you come to the UK and job-hunt, freelance, start a business, or work for any employer. You get 2 years, or 3 if you hold a PhD. That freedom raises the bar on documents. UKVI has nothing else to check, so the quality of your translation matters more.
Required Documents & Translation
| Document | Purpose | Translation Required |
|---|---|---|
| Degree certificate | Proves qualification awarded | If not in English |
| Ecctis verification | Confirms UK equivalence + award date | Ecctis writes it in English, but your source documents need translation |
| Transcript | You must send it to Ecctis | If not in English |
| Passport | Identity document | The details page, if it is not in Latin script |
| English test (if required) | CEFR B1 across four skills | Usually in English already |
| Bank statements | Maintenance £1,270 | If not in English |
The Ecctis Verification Step
Only the HPI route needs Ecctis (UK ENIC) verification. You must get a Verification Visa Letter. It shows that your degree is equal to a UK bachelor's, master's, or PhD, and that it came from an eligible institution. Ecctis accepts documents in the original language with a certified translation. If a translation is missing or wrong at this step, the problem carries through to your UKVI application.
Date Sensitivity — The Global Universities List Changes Yearly
Your university must have been on the list in the year you graduated, not this year. So your translated degree certificate must show the exact award date. That lets Ecctis match it to the right yearly list. If the original uses a non-Gregorian calendar, such as the Japanese Reiwa era, the translator must convert every date exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions
My university is ranked top-50 now but wasn't in my graduation year. Can I still apply?
No. UKVI only uses the list for the year you graduated. It does not matter if your university joined or left the list later. The change does not work backwards in either direction.
Do I need to translate my transcript if my degree is in English?
Most likely not. But check your transcript for anything that is not in English, such as grades, the grading scale, or the text on a university seal. Those parts should be translated, or clearly marked as standard Latin.
Can I extend or switch from HPI?
You cannot extend HPI. It is a one-off visa of 2 or 3 years. But you can switch inside the UK to Skilled Worker, Start-up, Innovator, or Global Talent. Each switch needs its own translated documents.
Who certifies the translations for Ecctis?
Ecctis accepts translations from UK certified translation providers (including us), from sworn translators overseas, or from qualified translators who add a statement of accuracy. Using one provider for everything keeps it simple.
