Foreign Diploma Translation for UK Visa: 2026 Guide

Some UK visas give points for education. Skilled Worker, Scale-up, HPI, Student, and Global Talent all do. Each one needs your foreign diploma in English. For Ecctis equivalence, the translation must be exact. Diploma titles, grading scales, and institution names all matter. This guide covers what to translate, how to do it, and how to avoid the most common rejections.

What Counts as a "Diploma" for UK Purposes?

In the UK, "diploma" means any formal qualification certificate. That covers high school diplomas, bachelor degree certificates, master's diplomas, postgraduate certificates, professional diplomas such as Chartered Accountancy, and vocational diplomas such as welding or nursing assistant. Each one has its own translation quirks. But they all face the same UKVI rules, and each needs a certified diploma translation that meets Ecctis and Home Office standards.

What the Translator Must Capture

  1. Awarding institution name — keep the original and add the English version
  2. Diploma title exactly as written — do not swap in the nearest UK equivalent
  3. Subject or major — a literal translation, with any specialism
  4. Classification or grade — with the grading scale explained
  5. Date of award — changed to the Gregorian calendar if needed
  6. Graduation ceremony details — if the diploma lists them
  7. Seals, signatures, ribbons — described in square brackets
  8. Security features — watermarks and holograms noted

Golden Rule: Translate, Don't Interpret

A translator's job is to carry over the meaning. It is not to decide equivalence. Translate "Licenciatura en Derecho" as "Bachelor's degree in Law (Licenciatura)", not as "LLB". Ecctis decides UK equivalence, not the translator. Translators who read too much into a title cause refusals.

Transcript Accompanies the Diploma

A diploma on its own is not enough for Ecctis or UKVI. You also need the transcript (Kvalifikasiya Cədvəli, Suplemento ao Diploma, Academic Record, and so on). It shows your subjects, grades, and credit hours. Some institutions issue a European Diploma Supplement in two languages. That still needs certification in English if the non-English part carries real content.

Regional Considerations

Chinese qualifications: These now need a CSSD / CHESICC verification letter as well as the translation. The CHESICC report comes in English, but the diplomas behind it still need translating.
Russian/Soviet-era diplomas: There are often two versions of the same document. The translator should note "Issued under [former state] authority" where it applies.
Middle Eastern diplomas: Hijri calendar dates must be changed to Gregorian dates. Royal insignia should be described in the translator's notes.
African qualifications: Some degrees, such as the Nigerian SSCE, come with moderation results on a separate sheet. You need every part.
Latin American titulo: The "título" and the "acta de grado" do different jobs. You may need both.

Diploma Mills & Authentication

UKVI and Ecctis keep watchlists of institutions that are not accredited. If your diploma comes from one of them, a translation will not save it. Check that the institution is accredited in its own country first. Do that before you spend money on translation and Ecctis fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

My diploma is bilingual (e.g., English + native language). Do I still need translation?

If the English version is a full, legally equal version, and not just a summary, you do not need another translation. But any seals, stamps, or signatures in the non-English part may still need translator's notes.

How old can my diploma be for UK visa purposes?

The diploma itself has no age limit. The translation should usually be less than 2 years old. Many applications still accept older translations, as long as the diploma and the translation are both original and authenticated.

Do I need to translate my diploma cover/folder?

No. Translate only the certificate page itself, plus any official schedules attached to it. Decorative covers and binding do not need translation.

What about professional certifications without formal diplomas?

Professional qualifications, such as Chartered Accountant or Engineer, often come as membership letters rather than diplomas. Those letters need the same certified translation as a formal diploma.
