French Marriage Certificate Translation for UK Spouse Visa Applications

A full guide to getting your French acte de mariage or livret de famille translated and certified for UK spouse and partner visa applications in 2026. It covers France, Morocco, Algeria, Senegal, Belgium, and Quebec.

Do You Need to Translate Your French Marriage Certificate?

Did you marry in a French-speaking country? If you are applying for a UK spouse visa, partner visa, or settlement as a spouse, you need a certified English translation of your marriage certificate. This is true for any acte de mariage. It applies to mainland France, French overseas territories, and every French-speaking country, including Morocco, Algeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Belgium, Switzerland, and Quebec.

French is spoken across more of the world than almost any other language, and many French speakers live in the UK. Marriage certificates from these countries share the language, but little else. They differ a lot in layout, legal wording, how religious and civil marriages are recorded, and what proof of authenticity is needed.

UKVI Requirement for French Marriage Documents

The UK Home Office wants a certified English translation of every foreign marriage certificate sent with a spouse visa application. For French documents, that means translating the whole acte de mariage. Every field, margin note (mentions marginales), seal, and stamp must be included.

Note since Brexit: an EU multilingual standard form attached to a French marriage certificate does not replace a full certified translation for a UK visa.

Types of French Marriage Documents for UK Visa Purposes

The French civil registry issues several kinds of marriage document. You need to know which one you have, and which one UKVI wants:

Acte de Mariage — Copie Intégrale

The full copy of the marriage register entry. It shows both spouses' details, their parents' names, the witnesses, the officiant, and the date and place of the marriage. It also shows all later margin notes (mentions marginales), such as a divorce, the death of a spouse, or the recognition of children. This is the fullest document, and the one UKVI usually asks for.

Acte de Mariage — Extrait avec Filiation

An extract that shows parents' details but leaves out some margin notes. It is usually enough for a UK spouse visa. But a copie intégrale is better in harder cases, such as an earlier marriage or children from a past relationship.

Livret de Famille

The French family booklet given out at the marriage. It records the marriage and later family events such as births and deaths. People often send it with the acte de mariage for a spouse visa. Every page you use must be translated.

Extrait Plurilingue (Multilingual Form)

A standard EU multilingual extract. Since Brexit, the UK will not take it in place of a certified translation. It can be handy as a reference. But you still need a full certified translation to send to UKVI.

Francophone Countries: Different Formats, Same Language

French-language marriage certificates follow different layouts, laws, and proof-of-authenticity rules in each country. Here is what to expect from the countries we see most often in UK spouse visa applications:

Metropolitan France

The mairie (town hall) where the marriage was registered issues French civil marriage certificates (actes de mariage). France keeps its civil registry entirely separate from religion. Only the civil ceremony is legally binding. A religious ceremony has no legal force in France.

Modern French actes de mariage are standard A4 documents. They carry security features, the state emblem, and an official seal. They hold all the information UKVI needs. Margin notes (mentions marginales) may record a later divorce or the death of a spouse. France has signed the Hague Convention, so apostilles are available. UK visas do not require them.

Morocco

Moroccan marriage certificates are the trickiest. Morocco records marriages in two ways. The first is the civil registry (état civil), run by local communes. The second is the Islamic marriage contract (عقد الزواج), authenticated by Adoul (Islamic notaries) and the Ministry of Justice.

For a UK visa you usually need the civil registry marriage certificate (extrait d'acte de mariage). If you married under Islamic rites, you also need the Adoul marriage contract. Both must be translated. Moroccan documents can take an apostille, because Morocco joined the Hague Apostille Convention, in force since 14 August 2016. Older documents legalised through the Moroccan Embassy and the FCDO before that date are still valid.

Moroccan certificates can mix French and Darija Arabic. Our translators handle these bilingual Moroccan civil documents.

Algeria

The civil registry under the Ministry of Interior (Direction de l'État Civil) issues Algerian marriage certificates (actes de mariage). Algeria's civil registry is mostly in French, a legacy of the colonial period. Since independence, though, parts of it have slowly moved to Arabic.

Algerian marriage documents may be in French, in Arabic, or in both. For a UK visa, both the French and the Arabic parts must be translated. Algeria is not a Hague Convention member, so these documents need legalisation through the Algerian Embassy and the FCDO.

Senegal and Sub-Saharan Francophone Africa

Senegal, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, and the Democratic Republic of Congo all use French for official paperwork, including civil registration. Their marriage certificates follow a broadly French layout, adapted to local law.

Print quality varies. Some certificates are handwritten, in full or in part. The marriage may have been registered long after it took place. Translators must note these points without suggesting the document is invalid.

Belgium

Belgian marriage certificates may be in French, Dutch (Flemish), or German. It depends on the municipality. French-language Belgian certificates (actes de mariage) from Wallonia and Brussels look much like French civil certificates. They carry Belgian state emblems and municipality seals.

Belgium has signed the Hague Convention. Belgian certificates are usually clear and easy to translate. Some bilingual Belgian documents need sections translated from both French and Dutch.

Quebec, Canada

The Directeur de l'état civil du Québec issues French-language certificates. Quebec marriage certificates use Canadian French wording. They follow Quebec's own civil law tradition, which is based on French civil law rather than common law.

Quebec usually issues two documents: a marriage certificate (certificat de mariage) and an act of marriage (acte de mariage). Canada has signed the Hague Convention, so apostilles are available. For a UK visa, the main thing you need is a certified translation.

Apostille vs Legalisation: Which Does Your French Marriage Certificate Need?

Hague Convention Countries (Apostille Available)

  • • France ✓
  • • Belgium ✓
  • • Switzerland ✓
  • • Canada/Quebec ✓
  • • Tunisia ✓

Note: UK visa applications usually do not need apostilles. But these countries can issue them if you need one for something else.

Non-Hague Countries (Legalisation Required)

  • • Morocco — Embassy + FCDO legalisation
  • • Algeria — Embassy + FCDO legalisation
  • • Senegal — Embassy + FCDO legalisation
  • • Many sub-Saharan Francophone countries

Some UK visa applications only accept these documents once the FCDO has legalised them.

Get Your Acte de Mariage

Ask for a recent copie intégrale of your acte de mariage. You can get one:

  • From the mairie of the commune where you married, for French documents
  • Online at the Service-Public.fr portal, for French civil registry documents
  • From the embassy or consulate, for documents from other French-speaking countries
  • Straight from the country's civil registry office, if you have contacts there
2

Check for Legalisation Requirements

Did you marry in Morocco, Algeria, or another country outside the Hague Convention? Check whether your document needs legalisation, which means an embassy stamp plus an FCDO stamp. Do this before you send your UK visa application. Legalisation is a separate step. If your caseworker asks for it, finish it before the translation.

Common Questions About French Marriage Certificate Translation

Can I use the extrait plurilingue (multilingual form) instead of a translation?

No. Since Brexit, the UK does not accept EU multilingual standard forms in place of a certified translation. Even if your French acte de mariage has one attached, you still need a full certified English translation for UKVI. You can include the multilingual form as a reference, but it cannot replace the certified translation.

My marriage certificate is from Morocco and is in Arabic and French. What do I need translated?

Both the French and the Arabic parts must be translated into English. Our translators handle bilingual Moroccan civil documents. We translate the whole thing. That covers the French civil certificate and any Arabic Adoul contract or registration entry.

What are mentions marginales and do I need to translate them?

Yes, always. Mentions marginales are margin notes added to French civil registry documents. They record later life events, above all divorce, the death of a spouse, or PACS (civil partnership). They matter a great deal for spouse visas, because they can show whether an earlier marriage has ended. All mentions marginales must be translated.

Do I need to translate the livret de famille as well as the acte de mariage?

UKVI mainly wants the acte de mariage. But if you also use the livret de famille as supporting evidence, for example to show children from the marriage, those pages must be translated. Upload every page you plan to send and we will translate them.

How do I get a replacement acte de mariage from France?

You can ask for a new copie intégrale from the mairie of the commune where you married, from the French Consulate in London, or online at the Service-Public.fr portal if you are a French national. French actes de mariage do not expire. Even so, UKVI may prefer a recent copy, so that any mentions marginales are up to date.

My Senegalese/Cameroonian marriage certificate was registered late. Is this a problem?

Late registration is common in some French-speaking African countries. The certificate shows both the marriage date and the registration date. A certified translation reports both dates exactly. UKVI caseworkers know that late registration is normal in some countries. Just make sure any explanatory notes from the civil registry are translated too.
