Belarusian Documents Translation for UK Visa 2026
Belarusian civil documents use both the Russian and the Belarusian Cyrillic script. Belarus has been part of the Hague Apostille Convention since 1992, so its documents take an apostille rather than a full legalisation chain. UK and EU sanctions after the disputed 2020 election have made consular access much harder in practice. This guide covers the main documents, what the translation must show, and the real problems with getting documents authenticated.
Belarus has two official languages: Belarusian and Russian. ZAGS (Аддзел загсу / Отдел ЗАГС — Civil Registry Office) issues the civil documents: birth, marriage, and divorce certificates. They can be in Belarusian, in Russian, or sometimes in both. Older Soviet-era documents are usually in Russian only. Documents issued since independence may be in Belarusian, or in two languages. Our translators handle both languages in one certified translation.
Belarus: Apostille Available, but Access Is Hard
Belarus has been bound by the Hague Apostille Convention since 16 June 1992, as one of the successor states to the USSR. So a Belarusian public document takes a single apostille, usually issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (some documents are apostilled by the Ministry of Justice or the Ministry of Education). You do not need the old four-step consular chain. In practice the hard part is access, not the rule: UK sanctions on Belarus after the 2020 political crisis have cut back UK consular services in Minsk. Check the current UK government guidance on Belarusian document legalisation. Sometimes UKVI will accept documents without full legalisation. You must be able to show that it was impossible to get, and you must explain this in full.
Key Belarusian Documents for UK Visa Translation
Свідоцтва аб нараджэнні / Свидетельство о рождении (Birth Certificate)
ZAGS issues birth certificates in Belarusian (свідоцтва аб нараджэнні), in Russian (свидетельство о рождении), or in both. They show the child's name, the date and place of birth, and the parents' details. Soviet-era certificates (before 1991) are in Russian only. All of them need certified translation for UKVI.
Свідоцтва аб шлюбе / Свидетельство о браке (Marriage Certificate)
ZAGS issues Belarusian marriage certificates in Belarusian or in Russian. They show both spouses' names, the date and place of the marriage, and the ZAGS registration number. You need a certified translation for a UKVI spouse visa application.
Пашпарт / Паспорт (Passport)
The Belarusian passport has its personal-details pages in Belarusian and Russian. The data page may need certified translation if it is not already in Latin script. For most UKVI identity checks, the data page is enough alongside your civil documents.
Sanctions and Consular Access
After the disputed election of August 2020 and the crackdown that followed, the UK put sanctions on Belarus. This has made the UK consular step of the legalisation chain much harder. Check the current Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) guidance on Belarusian document legalisation before you start.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Belarusian documents are in Russian, not Belarusian. Can they still be translated and used for my UK visa application?
Yes. Many Belarusian civil documents are in Russian. This is true above all for documents issued before independence, or in mainly Russian-speaking regions. Our translators do certified Russian-to-English translations of documents issued in Belarus. The translation will show that the document came from the relevant Belarusian ZAGS office.
I cannot complete the full Belarusian document legalisation chain because UK consular services in Minsk are restricted. What can I do?
Sanctions or limited consular access can make the full chain impossible. If that happens, add a detailed covering letter to your UKVI application. Set out each step you took and why you could not finish it. UKVI caseworkers can accept documents without legalisation in exceptional cases. Keep proof of every attempt you made.
